  1. The eCSFB issue is little different from 18 months ago when Sprint started selling LTE handsets before LTE was officially available anywhere.  Some people approved of that move; others strongly criticized it.  As always, you cannot please everyone.

But this has become standard operating procedure for Sprint.  Do not fall behind on desirable devices.  Release them even if the network is not ready for their full capabilities.  That way, they are already on the network as soon as it goes live.

If you cannot stomach this, then we recommend honestly that Sprint is not the right choice for you.  Go find another wireless provider.

I'm fine, just disappointed and thinking "seriously Sprint?  This is happening again?"  I'll just have to "suffer" with my S4 that does get LTE at my workplace and my home.

  2. The device works fine, it can't get 4G in some markets until the network is properly upgraded.

Huh?  How does it work "fine" if it can't get LTE where LTE is available?

I wouldn't expect the device to get LTE in a non LTE market, but that's not what we're talking about here.

  3. What would you do?  All indications are they are working as fast as they can to get the network up to date.  Would you have just said pass to two flagship devices and catch the heat for that also.  Like I said no-win.

I will agree though, there should have been a public disclosure.  The mistake was hiding the issue, not releasing the phones.  Trying to hide the issue makes it worse.

Not release a device that doesn't work.  That's what I would do.  Dealing with complaints, returns, bad press/word of mouth would be the least desirable option in my opinion.  I've been waiting for this device, and while I'm disappointed I can't get one, I would've been even more disappointed to get one and find out it doesn't work.

On a positive note, I am really thankful for this site and all of the knowledgeable people that participate.  If it weren't for this site, I would've purchased the Nexus 5, and I would've been pissed.

  4. No, eCSFB is a network issue, not a device issue.  Network Vision is simply not as far along in some markets as Sprint would like.  But what is Sprint to do?  Not release the LG G2 and Nexus 5 until next spring or even skip them altogether?  People would then complain that Sprint does not have the latest and greatest handsets.  Heck, some members here whined when the G2 was not released for a month after it appeared on other providers.

Sometimes, you have to do the best that you can in a flawed situation.  That is what Sprint is trying to do.

What is Sprint supposed to do?  I don't know, but if releasing a device that doesn't work properly on their network was the best option, then....wow.

I understand its complicated, but that's what they're supposed to be experts at and that's why we pay them a good amount of money every month.

  5. Does sprint not test these before they release them? I don't understand how a company can release a phone that doesn't work. Sprint knows what kind of equipment they use in all of their markets, they know the hardware specs of the device. Either they didn't fully test the phone, or they did, knew there was a problem, and released it anyway. I just want to buy a Nexus, its so incredibly frustrating.

  6. Bummer. Why is it that Nexus phones seem to always have signal issues? I've had both Nexus phones on Sprint and both had signal issues. The Galaxy Nexus was so bad it was exchanged after a day for a GS3. I didn't want a Touchwiz phone, but I needed a phone that was functional.

I really want a Nexus phone THAT WORKS on Sprint!!! Dammit!!

  7. Quick question: has anyone experienced any creaking on the device at all? I read somewhere that it creaks quite a bit, and my fathers creaks a bit too... Nothing too bad, but it still creaks.

    -Luis

No creaks with mine. Feels like the most solid phone I've owned. Yeah, it's partially plastic, but half of the device is gorilla glass 3.

  8. Just picked up a black S4. Really like it. It came down to the S4 and the One. I'm a sucker for amoled screens and didn't want a fixed battery, so S4 it is. The screen is awesome,I really like how they fit a 5 inch screen without making the footprint bigger than the S3 or One...and you absolutely cannot see the pixels so it being pentile doesn't mean anything.

  9. The main reason why I was thinking of trying the windows phone is because the OS is supposed to be more stable and smooth than Android. My GS3 is supposed to be a powerhouse, but it still stutters and lags sometimes just like my old EVO. Sometimes when flipping between screens or closing out of apps it takes a few seconds to load the homescreen.

I've played around with Windows phones and they seem fast and very smooth.

  10. I used a Lumia 920 for a few months, it was pretty nice. But if you had an application that was poorly written and chewed up your battery, you had no way to know which application it was. I had to remove them all one by one, over time until I had none installed.

Not very user friendly for people that wanted a little choice in how things work.

The default email application would auto resize images when you sent them via email, you had no choice, it just did it for you. The images sent were of poor quality, lower resolution, high compression. No way to change this.

I see it as an operating system in the middle of iOS and Android, where the user might be a little more capable.

I replaced mine with a Nexus4, a much cheaper phone, much better. I did lose the AT&T LTE, but its still fast enough for me.

Good to know, these are the things you don't know about until you own the phone. I was thinking of changing to something different, but I think I'll just wait and see with the wife's phone. I don't think that stuff would matter to my wife, all she needs it for is facebook, e-mail, messaging, and of course the phone.

I really do wish Sprint would offer the Nexus 4. Also waiting to see what Google/Motorola has in store as far as new phones.

  11. thanks nels-- how does the S3 reception measure up to your Nexus S 4G - both wifi and cell?

It's better, the NS4G would intermittently drop wimax. I haven't had any issues yet with the GS3, but I have yet to try it with LTE so who knows?

  12. nels (and i did think you're avatar was you!) - what did you do re the phones? did you jump to the S3?? i'm in the exact same boat, though my nexus s 4g is very laggy. i'm in chicago and the sprint service has been deplorable with the upgrade and as a result i'm hesitant to get the S3 under these temporary conditions. i don't think it's fair for me to assume the signal quality of any phone around the chicago area at the moment - so i'm trying to read up more on the S3 - and other possible choices. i do want to upgrade soon.

I got the nexus and on the second day, the data stopped working. I heard all the stories about data issues with the galaxy nexus but I still took a chance. I ended up exchanging for an S3. I don't mind touchwiz as much as I thought I would although I'd still prefer stock Android. A functioning phone > stock Android though.

  13. Just got off the phone with the switch, 10-15 towers in and powered down as samsung is elbows and ass cracks working on finishing the switch install in the minneapolis switch. looking to turn it on early next week..

    Awesome!!! :D ....uh....wait a second....I'm just a finance guy...what does this mean?

  14. I've been using tune in radio, works like a charm. I'd been having trouble with the official espn radio app, but I listen to espn radio clear as a bell. Music stations work fine as well

Thanks for the tip, downloaded tune in and it works. You just made my day for tomorrow.

  15. OK, just downloaded another streaming music app, mog, and it doesn't work either. 3 different streaming music apps don't work on the galaxy s3. Hardware, software, carrier, app, who knows?

Just tried Pandora on the wife's nexus s 4g and it works!

So frustrating. Bike ride tomorrow isn't going to be the same.

  16. My Pandora and Slacker stopped working today. It worked for about a week and now it just loads over and over again. I have data, 366 kbps, slow, but enough to stream music. They work over WiFi.

    I've tried:

    -Updating prl and profile

    -Uninstalling and reloading the app

    -Powering on and off

-Calling sprint tech support which had me factory reset and they re- activated the device OTA

Nothing works. Looked it up on the internet and see others have the same issue. One solution I've seen involved changing some data proxy settings, but I'm not sure I want to mess with that.

Sprint says its an app issue, but two different apps do the same thing, so I'm thinking its a sprint data settings issue.

Anyone else here have this issue? I NEED this to work, I can't do my 2 hour bike rides or train commute without streaming music

  17. They weren't doing me any favors in exchanging for an S3, I had to pay the price difference and a restocking fee. I'll be disputing the restocking fee.

I hate to say it, but Google needs to take a lesson from Apple. Apple releases and updates their iPhone on both GSM and CDMA carriers without nearly as many issues and delays as nexus devices. Make it happen Google.

    So you caved?

The Moto implementation of ICS looks to be pretty close to stock. Here's hoping they come out with a killer JB device, one of these days...

I didn't have a choice. I didn't want another GNEX after my brand new one didn't work. The phone has been out for months, there shouldn't be any data bugs. It amazes me that between Sprint, Verizon, Google, and Samsung, nobody can figure the CDMA GNEX out. I tried to get my NS4G back but they already sent it in. I needed a phone, so I picked the GS3 because of the removable battery and 2gb ram. The signal is fine on the GS3, so is the GNEX Google or Sprint's fault? I don't know, but it's a shame. I just read that Verizon is sending out another ICS OTA for their GNEX that is supposed to fix the radios.....7 months later. But yes, my first choice was a functional GNEX and that didn't happen.

  19.

Oh hell no, thats definitely not right. If I were you I would call customer service and ask for a credit in the same amount.

I called them today, they said they'd make a note of it and if it shows up on the bill, call them. Not sure why the sprint store couldn't do that. I specifically went to a sprint store in case of an issue like this, but it didn't matter. I could've gotten the GNEX or GS3 cheaper on amazon or radio shack than at a sprint store. Next time. :-)
