  1. Well, off-topic discussion is allowed in this part of the site.

Nonetheless, cost w/o the discount just got too expensive for him/her. I would recommend removing TEP(if you have it & don't feel like you need it). It does help cost a little but. Otherwise, I think prepaid might be a good idea for you. Depending on service quality in your area and your month voice usage, T-Mobile $30 100 min/5GB/Unltd text might be something you can work with.

  2. In store repairs doesn't always work out though.

Once upon a time, I had a EVO 4G(this was about 2 years ago). One day the LCD panel just...died. Fortunately, there was a Sprint store near my old HS. I went in to the store, gave them the phone(I had TEP at the time), and came back an hour later to pick it up.

I picked-up my phone and everything seemed to be great & didn't have to pay out-of-pocket to Asurion to get it replaced. They did, however, notate on the account that the phone was rooted(according to the rep, they did me a "favor" by repairing the phone). I was unable to flash the phone back beforehand to a stock ROM since I couldn't see what's on the screen.

Anyway, I thanked the rep and went home. Soon after arriving home, I realized that the entire lower right of the touch panel is unresponsive. Thus, I went back to the Sprint store the following day and asked them to switch out the assembly. Unfortunately, the LCD/Touch screen assembly was the only 'functioning' one they had. I asked if they can give me an replacement EVO, they declined.

The only other official Sprint repair center was pretty far away(and had no means to get there, at least via mass transit).

Thus, I was stuck with a partially-function EVO(but at least I could get back on a stock ROM, so there's that).

After a few days, I remembered reading about Sprint's Advanced Exchange program about a year back. Unfortunately, by the time I remembered, Advanced Exchange's web portal was discontinued due to abuse. However, the program is still available via calling CS directly.

Thus I did, and 24 hours later, a working, refurb EVO arrived at my doorstep & the defective EVO was sent back to Sprint. It didn't cost me a dime(but I do believe I had to pay a security deposit, which was refunded when they received the phone).

What surprises me is that the rep never mentioned this program to me, only offering the Asurion option. It was probably due to the fact that they didn't know of it, but if I didn't remember reading about Advance Exchange, I probably would've went to Asurion and paid for a refurb. In the end, bad TEP experiences do happen, they're just not common.

  3.

[...]Those users primarily want to stream low bit rate 64-128 kbps content. They would not be affected by speed tiers. Yet, in sheer numbers, they would affect the capacity of the network. So, what would you do about that? What is your solution?

    AJ

What exactly would be an viable solution to that other than outright banning or limiting the amount of time those type of services can be used? It's not the hugest problem in the forefront of wireless telecommunications(compared to...idk, torrenting the first two season's of Breaking Bad in HD over EvDO at 3pm on a Friday afternoon), but there isn't really a solution to that other than what I already mentioned, or make the data cap so low that these type of services over 3G/4G will decrease significantly(a la Netflix).

I guess you were getting more at technological limitations of current networks & it's management, but I can be wrong...

  4. Looking at those tiered data plans Sprint is charging extra for hotspot with separate hotspot data pools for different devices. Instead of deducting data from the data pool like att and vzw.

If that's the case, I'm a little surprised that they didn't go along the lines of what they did on Virgin, in which they would just on an extra gig to the total data allotment(pre-throttle) and let you use the combined data between the phone and the hotspot app.

  5. I welcome this type of plan structure, but unlimited data should continue to be an option for those who need(or want) it. That's if this eventually comes to the consumer-side of things.

If necessary, raise the price of unlimited data, but if so, separate data allotments from the rest of the plan(Voice/Text) and make data plans optional on smartphones. Also, separate the separate the device subsidy from the plan(a la T-Mobile).

  6. Happy to see LTE devices available on the SPG brands. Personally, I'll probably wait until either high-end phones hit Virgin or until CDMA/LTE-provisioned SIMs happen on Virgin.

No roaming and some throttling is already expected from prepaid brands. With that in mind, I don't see why the extra $35 a month for SAYG is worth it(outside of repair services and improved CS, which is debatable since I don't know how SPGs CS is like).

  7. VX is a great airline experience. Not so great for making money. Virgin first class experience is second to none for domestic service.

My big complaint on flying American MD 88's is the first class experience. Coach is 2+3, which is nice. But in first class they still squeeze in 2+2. The first class cabins in the M88's are so dated and the experience blah.

VX is pretty damn great at what it offers...except at making money. With Frontier getting spinned-off, maybe a F9/VX merge can be in the cards? Only problem is that they offer different products in terms of service/rewards/etc.

  8. The DOJ inquiry seems to be nothing to make a big fuss about, as DT went though the same thing when they bought Voicestream years ago. I do wonder how far this deal would go if it was China Mobile. I personally don't have any issues with such a deal happening, but then again, I'm not senator, regulatory body, corporation, or a lobbyist.

The new T-Mobile/MetroPCS entity will be 76% owned by DT, with the rest owned by MetroPCS and their shareholders.

In all, I, an american consumer only see good things coming from the approval of this investment.
