  1. I'm not defensive of his good experience. I'm defensive of his grammar. And I grew up with a grammar nazi at home, she should have been an English teacher, but that's neither here nor there. I just can't stand most grammatically incorrect "sentences" that are out there anymore. It's not hip. End of subject!

  2. I just don't know if wireless networks are 1 to 1 comps to highways. I think a better analogy would be ramping up capacity in the areas where large amounts of people are congregated first, even though that isn't likely to generate higher speeds tests per se. Right now I would actually rate VZ a little better than T-Mobile at this given VZ has come out and said that their focus is to deliver capacity where it is needed first while T-Mobile seems to care more about the speed test crown over more consistent results. That's the entire issue with Ookla BTW - their data set will swing urban because of crowd sourcing, T-Mobile zero rating SpeedTest, and Verizon charging data for SpeedTest. That distorts that sample a bit.

more than just a bit, I'm my opinion it makes Ookla speed test crown nearly meaningless... Look at fast speed tests data usage some are 100 plus Megs, who in their right mind would blow through 10 of those every month if costs you money, either overages or needing a higher data plan? Not only is it white listed but it's prioritized. In my opinion that's no better than Samsung when they set their cpu to over clock for all performance testing. It's not representative of real world experience.

15x15 getting congestion, Still think Binge On is a good idea? More like #cringeon

    Even VOLTE won't work

not a surprise, it can happen to any provider regardless of amount of deployed spectrum.  love how they always blame it on backhaul and then say middle of the night is still 100+.

  4. You're kidding right? You realize that the world has been watching TV just fine at much less than 480p for over 50 years? On big boy TV's nonetheless. The idea that we're talking about whether 480p is "acceptable" for a 5" screen is ridiculous.

i said it looks ok, but not a level of quality that would make me give up home internet and use hotspot + binge on for home use.  your right people used to listen to tv shows on the radio, then watch them in black and white, they also used to use a hand crank to start their cars....  could u use a flip phone? yes but you choose to use a galaxy s6 active (according to your profile) you could certainly use something old, but you prefer a newer nice phone, i prefer something higher than 480P.  Neither opinion is wrong but i would prefer you not mock my opinions just because they differ from yours.  Thanks,   Nick

  5. Yeah I was just gonna say, with full bars he's obviously next to a site and if 18 is all he's getting then that site is pretty well loaded. And peak hours are more like 4-9 PM.

T-Mobile is only running 30 MHz on LTE in Chicago, Verizon and AT&T are running 60 MHz worth, and sprint is running anywhere between 70-80 MHz worth.

T-Mobile also doesn't have much more spectrum they can refarm. The best they could do is shut down GSM, and refarm one of the DC-HSPA carriers and that would get them another 10x10 on band 2.

There is not a doubt in my mind that T-Mobile is the weakest carrier in Chicago.

it is all about location location location, but sprint has an enormous amount of spectrum left to deploy on band 41, while t mobile has hit a wall with available spectrum for lte deployment.  the 600 auction will help but it wont close the gap they have with sprint. that means sprints only going to get better provided they deploy it properly and t mobile will only get worse, overall.  I don't know what the end game is for t mobile, if they continue to allow people to use and abuse their network and add subs without adding capacity at an equal clip they will only hurt them selves and the customers... i don't get it... whats the plan?

  6. Very true. The only question left is if 480p netflix is sufficient for tv viewing. I am guessing it wouldn't be good enough and would bother most people to watch on a screen larger than a tablet.

actually reddit  has a lot of comments on that, the general opinion is its good enough.  that surprises me I figured it would look fair on a mobile screen and poor on a big screen, I have not see this myself I did a test on my iphone 6 plus playing 420P it looks ok... but certainly nothing i would want on my 55 inch flat screen, so either t mobile is using some advanced form of compression, its not truly 480P (720P?)  or people just don't know what they are talking about.... this will get sorted out in time and we will see the true effects of this "free" service soontm.

  7. Binge on isn't gonna do nothing to capacity. This is what I get during peak hours and tethering ps3 and laptop. XtAo2Ty.png

that speed tests only highlights the growing congestion, strong signal with 18 down and 26 up.. that is a perfectly acceptable and usable speed for sure, but anytime you consistently see upload faster than download it is the first stage in congestion.  also not sure if i would call 1:16 peak hours, not off hours but not peak hours either.

  8. Hmm huh I never even looked at the uplink

    Yeah over saturated.

I'd never judge though by what happens in a carrier store since I'd assume you're never really on the network, rather a microcell -- no?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

probably just the macro network, i doubt the store was so crowded it would drag down a micro cell although a micro cell at every store wouldn't be a bad idea... "Look how great our network is!!!!!" ***on this micro cell

  9. Well,

Think about it this way: If someone on unlimited sees this and goes "Oh! I can save money and still watch Netflix the same amount!" They will use LESS bandwidth than they are currently using. I am not saying many people will give up unlimited but.. some very well might.

In your example of using a hotspot: An unlimited user can ALREADY do this and besides, 3-4 people running 480p netflix streams might not even hit the same bandwidth a single unlimited user on high quality settings might be pulling. The difference is larger if you are comparing 3-4 high quality streams vs 3-4 480p streams.

very true, it will only lead to a decrease in ARPU, however since binge on white lists hot spot data the same as mobile data it makes that a viable option for people with binge on to cut home internet....... cellular network as a replacement for home internet talk about crippling a network. / :  you are right 3-4 streams at 480p is a lot less data than 1080P however video consumption is far greater on a tv than a mobile device, time wise that is.

  10. I've been thinking about BingeOn some more this morning and I will bet it is a net win for Tmobile over all it's customer base. Basically, if you know how much bandwidth services use you can see it might work out.

Netflix has 3 settings I am aware of: Low @ .3GB/hr, Medium @.7GB/Hr, High @ up to 3 GB/hr. Netflix has actually like 7? different resolution settings but these are the rates it advertises.

Youtube (not yet included) 480p uses roughly 400MB/hr and 720p uses slightly more than twice that at 800-900MB/hr while 1080p is like 1.4 GB/hr

You'll notice the huge bandwidth hog, Twitch (720p @ ~1.3GB/hr or higher) is absent and this is also probably because it isn't cached content.

I'll bet they get those bandwidth rates slightly lower with the expectation that mobile users might not notice the slightly degraded quality because, hey, it is "free". All in all I don't think this is necessarily a huge HUGE deal. It may cause more strain on the network if their bet that people won't double their usage doesn't pan out but on the whole I bet truly unlimited users @720p or 1080p (roughly triple the bandwidth) are much bigger strains on the network.

but the real question is how much additional streaming will be done?  If some one regularly used 1.5 gigs per month with Netflix and limited it because of concerns of running out of high speed data, now that same person paying the same price can stream 20 gigs of Netflix albeit at a slower rate per hour.  It will be interesting to see if the reduction on rate will be enough to offset the increase in frequency.  and lets not count out the small percentage of people that will cut their home internet and exclusively use t mobile hot spot, since the majority of home broadband is used for streaming video. imagine 3-4 Netflix streams all using mobile hot spot for hours and hours everyday.

T-Mobile seems to be on a mission to rapidly destroy their network.

you need binge on active, im sure most people do since it was auto enabled. and it goes in effect after your data stash is gone.  I can't imagine this will help congested areas, and will cause many more areas to experience congestion.

  12. I was hoping to see loyalty customers getting $25 off their bill for a year.

Its hard to make a blanket statement like that, with so many legacy plans, many of witch are very inexpensive or include phone subsidies.  $25 bill credit might make some people half off while large families might feel like they got the shaft.... should they have sprint bill each line individually to get more credit?

  13. That's the tablet here: http://alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/products/tablet/pixi_7.html#.VkzEFHarRhE  Meh, but it's free.  No details on how to actually redeem this yet though, anyone see a way?

it's "free" for the first year but the second year will cost you $120 or $180 for service, it's such a crapy tablet it would surprise me if you still used it after 2 years...... same crapy "free" tablet deal that has been around for years.... nothing to see here.

  14. Well geez that makes a difference actually. I think my sister is on a 6GB plan at T-Mobile so if she chooses the 10GB plan to match her usage that is a decent deal really. That 7 year old sucks at explaining it fully.

It should have been a simple video that goes:

"AT&T,TMOBILE,VERIZON CUSTOMERS: STARTING NOVEMBER 20TH PICK ANY PLAN AT YOUR CURRENT CARRIER EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT ON THAT PLAN AND WE WILL TAKE 50% OFF YOUR BILL."

    ANY PLAN.

    50% OFF.

    WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?"

    etc

don't forget, sprint does not match, data stash, music freedom or binge on.... not that it matters to everyone but its something to remember.

  15. They  should get rid of the overages and activation fees. That are two of the things making them anti consumers. For over a year he has been throwing a bunch of plans to the wall trying to see which ones stick on it. Sprint main problem has been the network and trying to act like the Twin bells with overages and activation fees.

You  can do those things when you are in a position of strength not when you are struggling.

ohhh come on now... they only have

    1.starter unlimited plans

    2. unlimited plans

    3.family share plans

4.free amazon prime on select phones

    5.21,22,24 month lease

    6. 24 month easy pay

    7. cut your plan in half (ends tomorrow)

    8. cut your plan in half 2.0? (1.0 plus T mobile but missing music freedom and binge on)

I am sure im missing some but its not ultra complicated for new customers.... a ton of legacy plans tho...

  16. The more I think about the tablet deal, the less sense it makes. Take our free crap tablet and get a year of service free. Want a better tablet and willing to pay for it? No service promo for you. Come on Marcelo.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

yeah it doesn't make sense, buy a geed tablet get nothing for free, take our crap tablet free year... I wonder if you could get the crap tablet and transfer the service to a good one on a easy pay from sprint, that would probably incur a penalty.

  17. While still not great (and still not worth paying for a year of service on it), some of the specs listed for the Pixi 7 on Sprint's site are slightly better than what Phone Arena reported

    Memory

8GB ROM / 1GB RAM *MicroSD card slot supports up to 32GB

    Processor

    1.1 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm® Smapdragon™ processor

Thanks for correcting that, they could have updated the tablet but not the name that isn't uncommon for cheap tablets like this one.

  18.

"One year of free service includes either the $15 1GB plan or $10 Family Share Pack access. Must remain in good standing and have one active phone line of service. Free tablet is the Alcatel ONETOUCH PIXI™ 7. Limited supply."

    http://newsroom.sprint.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=12064

So after 2 years the tablet will cost you either $ 180 or $120 for one year of service and then you can cancel

I would have liked to see bring or buy your own tablet and we will give you free service for the fist year and you can finance it... im in the market for an ipad pro ( :

  19. WOW a  Alcatel ONETOUCH PIXI™ 7.

    http://www.phonearena.com/news/Alcatel-OneTouch-Pixi-7-hands-on-Android-tablet-on-the-cheap_id52922

"Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 hands-on: Android tablet on the cheap"

"There’s nothing flattering about the Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 from what we can see at the moment"

"Low end specs are expected for a device like this, so don’t expect anything sharp looking with this one."

"Cheap means cheap, so it’s not a shocker that it’s powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor with 512MB RAM. Due to its pre-production nature, we see some heavy performance glitches right away – again, it’s not something all that unexpected."

"Usually, affordable Android tablets omit cameras, so it’s to our amazement that this one is outfitted with not one, but TWO cameras. Don’t hold your breath, though, seeing that they’re measly sized 0.3-megapixel ones – front and back!"

so that for free i am amusing you need to pay for activation and service for the "free tablet"

  20. They probably have a warehouse full of some crap tablet they need to unload.  I mean, a free tablet for a year is a cool deal, but really does not get a lot of people excited. But I am sure it will pad the new activation numbers.

i don't know about you but im sick of the "free tablet" game, they are normally bottom of the barrel crap tablets....

  21. A quick counterpoint: Depending on the plans the new customers come from this will probably still be a benefit to margin/ARPU especially seeing how popular phone leasing is with new customers. If you are talking about margins etc then truthfully it is the legacy SERO/Framily plans that drive that down. I agree that it could have been a bigger deal but, still, half off even T-Mobile plans is actually a really huge savings for many people and the sad truth is that these types of moves are what Sprint has to do to gain goodwill back from people. They've had a terrible network for too long to simply issue press releases saying "The network is great now, really!" and they have to rely on the value proposition until they are considered a real option to people.

T-Mobile has made that transition and Sprint can as well.

counter counter point, T mobile offers binge on and music freedom so you could cut your plan on t mobile in half and stream all day long, plus data stash, sprint does not match any of that.   Not that im a t mobile fan, im just saying the fine print on this deal is huge.... and if people switch and think they are getting an exact match at half the price they will be mad when they discover video and music count now, but on t mobile it did not.  That is something most consumers will not understand... or look into.
