  1. My speeds typically crash in the evenings around 5:30-6pm and stay that way until 11 or 12 at night. They are always slow, even during the day I probably only get 200-300kbps, maybe 300-500kbps on a real good day. But at night, sometimes I'm getting dial-up like speeds, less than 100k. Now, the tower I use is more rural so it's most likely people getting home from work and using the tower a bit more, but who knows.

Does anyone know, when the network.sprint.com site says a tower is getting a "data speed upgrade", what are they actually changing?

I know the capacity upgrades would be more/better backhaul.

  2. I believe that number was just the increase in Network Vision spending from the 4th quarter 2011 to 1st quarter 2012. They stated that total capital expenditures for 2012 should be about $6 billion.

What I thought I heard was Network Vision spending was $54 million in 4Q11 and $104 million in 1Q12 and will double again for 2Q12. I could be "misremembering" though.

  3. Is the antenna passive or active? If it is passive, then it will almost certainly work just fine with the PCS G block. On the other hand, if it is active, then all bets are off.

It's passive so I would hope it would work. The only thing I might need is a new adapter depending on the type of connector the new LTE devices might have.

Since you're the Wireless Wavelength guru, looking at the website of the store where I bought my antenna they have a "full-band" omni-directional antenna that looks like a good one too. The gain numbers don't look quite as good as the one I have now but I don't really understand all the numbers.

What would be your opinion (if you don't mind giving it to me ;) ) on these two antennas:

    http://3gstore.com/product/2293_wilson-301101-omni-external-antenna.html

The second one is what I have now. Would it be worth spending the money on the newer one when LTE comes along?

    Thanks for the help AJ

  4. Nice little setup. However, do you think your external antenna equipment is compatible with PCS G-Block? I'm not familiar with the in's and out's of those antennas.

The antenna I have now shows the following support:

    Compatibility:

    700-800 / 824-894 / 880-960 / 1850-1990mhz frequencies - 1xRTT (Sprint/Verizon 2G), EVDO/EVDO Rev-A (Sprint/Verizon 3G), LTE (Verizon/AT&T 4G), EDGE (AT&T/T-Mobile 2G), HSPA (AT&T 3G), HSPA+ (AT&T "4G"). T-Mobile 3G and 4G only where 1900mhz is being used (T-Mobile also uses the 1700mhz and 2100mhz bands in some areas; this antenna will NOT help in those cases). Does NOT work for Sprint 4G WiMAX.

But at this point, none of the antennas at 3gstore (where I got it) list Sprint LTE as being supported.

When the time arrives, I'll see if I need a new one or not... or perhaps a better one. And that time can't come soon enough.

    :)

  5. I have an article in my backlog that discusses an upcoming broadband card. In the mean time, the new Tri-Network Hotspot is due May 18th.

Here is the article that Robert was talking about.

Thanks guys. Looking forward to the article Robert.

While the hotspot is nice, I like the USB card because I have an external antenna to improve my signal at home. Then I have the USB card plugged into a Cradlepoint router so I have wi-fi in the house.

  6. There has been a lot of talk about the LTE phones that Sprint has and will be releasing this year, but not much about any Broadband cards for LTE.

I would assume they're coming but does anyone have any additional information about what's in the pipe? Will the first ones have 800MHz support or will that come later?

I know they're not as sexy as the new phones, but for some of us they're our only link to the outside world. :)

  7. Yea they mentioned that here on this site. I think it is in the NV explained sticky (could be wrong). IIRC, Sprint is going to install some more t1 lines on the towers until they can get to it with NV upgrades.

I looked on the NV explained sticky and didn't see it. I'm definitely curious to know more about the issue.

Wow I was not aware of this fact on the legacy towers. I am curious what the fix will be because even band aid fixes are better than nothing until Network Vision hits that market. I wonder how long have they known about this problem.

Yeah, same questions here. Would love to know more about the issue and fixes.

    Anyone?

  8. Yep, I heard this on the radio in the car on the way home this afternoon. A similar article on CNN says Sprint already charges $36 for the same thing, but I don't recall a similar fee when I upgraded two years ago.

Maybe this is new? An "activation fee"?

Edit: Oops. Sorry for the double post.... Lost my wireless connection for a minute and didn't think I hit submit before it came back. Oh well.

  9. I have an exemption to the rule since my local phone company and cable company refuse to offer high speed internet to my street, right?

I'm in the same boat Josh, my phone company and the local cable company will NOT bring high speed to us and the many homes around us. I have requested cable once or twice a year since I moved here four years ago and, obviously, they still say the same thing that there aren't enough houses per mile. My house is about 1.5 miles from where cable is today and there are about 40 homes in that distance but Time Warner won't drop lines without 90 homes per mile.

CenturyLink has blanketed the entire neighboring county to ours according to my neighbor who works for them because they had the lowest broadband penetration rates in the state. Since the economy has slowed, so has CenturyLink's expansion to more rural areas.

Sprint Mobile BroadBand is my only viable solution at this point, since Verizon and AT&T don't have unlimited plans. I work from home for a large computer company and use a lot of data every month. It's not fast enough to stream movies or music (we tried Netflix briefly but it just wouldn't work), but for most of what I do from home it's acceptable. Later in the day and parts of the evening it's much slower which is when others are getting home from work.

The 4G LTE and capacity upgrades can't come soon enough for people like me who have no other viable options.
