  1. Found LTE for the first time in Orland Park at the Best Buy on LaGrange and 159th st. Walking into the store through the parking lot I got this. The signal faded once I got back into my car and drove south to the LaGrange/I-80 interchange. Um how do I attach my speedtest screen shot image? I have the PNG on my computer but I dont see how to attached a picture to a post.
  2. Really, didn't you buy the iPhone 5, or she buy the iPhone 5, knowing you were going to be stuck on a bogged down antiquated 3G network with speed and capactiy issues, at least until the LTE is actually rolled out later this year, before you made the purchase?
  3. Great thanks, I guess its either Samsung Galaxy S3 or wait for the Optimus G, which I hear is coming within the next month or so.
  4. Oh man im like in the process of getting a new LTE phone today or tomorrow. Do you think you could just quickly post the overall results. Like the best phone to hold an LTE signal is X, followed by Y, then Z.
  5. Its just a PR piece man, they had to feed something to the dogs.
  6. Did you read my earlier post on betting the over/under with another member on Chicago LTE Launch? I took the over on November 1st and was happy to do so. I still think this is a game of patience. I dont find any reason to believe that LTE would be launched in Oct as first predicted or even November. What company do you know meets agressive initial deadlines at will, without delay, or in full. None that I know of, including the ones I have worked for. My opinion has always been given the October/Nov rumors, wait till around Xmas/New Years and then evaluate what you see in terms of market penetration, live sites, and speeds.
  7. Well I live near Diversey and Lincoln in LP, my roommate just brought home a new Galaxy S3 last night. Obviously its only getting 3G, I did three speed tests around 11pm last night, I got 120K down, 350K Down, and one time 750K down. Not in that order.
  8. And being that they probably won't "launch" until they have Loop coverage my over on the over/under launch date of Nov 1st is looking pretty good.
  9. I ditto that, I probably would be bailing on Sprint by now if it wasn't for this site, but Ill be patient for a brand new uncongested LTE network.
  10. I have two points to make. First I went to the Sprint Store in the Loop on Lasalle and Clark to get some service done on my phone. While waiting I was messing around with their demo LTE phones; Galaxy S3, Photon Q, EVO LTE. I ran speed tests on all of them, they were connected to 3G and got between 40-80K on all devices. I even said something to the Sprint tech rep I spoke with and he was like yea, thats what the iPhone 4 (a 3G only device) has done to our 3G network right there. Yeah its that bad, and this was at like 11am too. Second, I went to cubs game at Wrigley last night, the stadium was empty maybe 15K people there tops. Anyway, I had my phone in 3G mode cuz my batter was low and damn WiMax sucks battery life. Point being I couldnt do anything in 3G mode, couldnt make calls, access the web, no data connection for apps (they all timed out). Could this be an indication that NV has finally hit Chicago neighborhood towers such as in Wrigleyville? Anyone else notice something similar. P.S. If I went back to 4G WiMax the phone worked fine, points to NV on the 3G Sprint towers IMO.
  11. Alright cool, Ill take the over. Whats our bet, say $10 paypal payment?
  12. Wanna make a bet, over/under market launch November 5th?
  13. Excellent article, though if you have been on this site for awhile nothing really all that earth shattering or new here. I think the key statement is when the Sprint Exec was "asking for some patience". To me, that seems to be what this is all about, Im not really all that confident in this floated October launch, and Im not all that confident in some spotty regional chicagoland service at Launch. I am confident that by Dec 31, 2012 the network will be in place. Most people I know move around quite a bit, the last thing you would want is LTE in the loop, but not in Wicker Park, then it works in Schaumburg, but not in Orland, then you drive to Wheaton and its good, but not in Oak Brook, etc etc. That would extremely painstaking and frustrating in my opinion. I think its very important we give Sprint the time they require to really build out our market and wait for official word for market launch and market completion. I see zero point in running to a Sprint store right now for an LTE phone, or even in the next couple months.
  14. Oh no I agree WiMax blows compared to LTE, especially LTE hooked up to the 100 Mbps fiber backhaul Sprint is putting in my place. My point is at least for me, my actual 3G use for the phone and data is minimal as it is. That being said, when all the Sprint Towers around me are going crazy with timeouts, drops, no connectivity.....I dont expect to be as effected as much b/c I am primary using WiMax (towers owned by clearwire not part of NV). I won't even use my phone in 3G as nothing seems to work properly, long before NV was announced. If it wasn't for WiMax I would have ditched Spring awhile ago. On WiMax I get anywhere from 1.5 Mbps to 8 Mbps download speeds, its not that reliable, but it serves the get me over purpose to LTE.
  15. This happens all the time during big transitions that require short term pain for long term benefit. Company's lose valuable employees during re-structures, acquisitions, etc. Country Club's lose members during big constructions due to the annoyance, and phone/tv/internet service providers lose subscribers during infrastructure turnover projects. Its the way it is. Some people stick it out till the end, some people jump ship right away, some people just do nothing and know nothing (and just complain). Im sure sprint forecaster that the pain of NV will be too much for some heavy and/or business users and they would lose some subscribers. The one thing that seems strange to me though is that I assume you, like me have a 4G WiMax device. Since WiMax is a clearwire network that Sprint leases out its not part of NV. So if you are connected to WiMax this NV transition really isn't an issue. I figured many of those places you mention like Naperville, Park Ridge, Bloomingdale, Elgin probably have good WiMax coverage in place already.
  16. Right on. I assumed Sprint's issue was probably crunching all out data usage onto old T1s. I remember in my high school networking class in 2000 how T1's were like the gold medal of network infrastructure and broadband. My how times have changed and how outdated Sprint's infrastructure is.
  17. Ethernet, wtf. Are you guys trying to run Ethernet cable to your 2002 HP PC from your Telocity DSL box in your home office or something. #Retro No Way Sprint uses Ethernet. We know the knew backhaul is Fiber right? Im sure the old backhaul is some sort of outdated copper line, T1, T3, OC3 that link to their distribution centers.
  18. Well there is only a few options to consider really. 1. "Launch" the Chicago market without adequate NV completed and LTE capabilities within the city proper or Loop area. Probably a fair amount of consumer backlash here. 2. Wait to "Launch" the Chicago market until a large portion if not all Chicago proper or Loop sites are completed. Understanding this would push "launch" back by a few months. 3. Do nothing and stick to the rumored plan regardless of NV progress; launch Chicago market in October with something like 30-40% of sites completed and wait for fill in of NV in the coming months which will improve coverage over time.
  19. Are you going to be driving around the homewood-flossmoor area anytime soon. I would love to see if there is LTE coverage around there where I spend a lot of time.
  20. Speaking of penetration problems......sorry I had to do it!
  21. Yeah thats better than Sprint's nationwide 3G average download speed of 0.59 Mbps.
  22. Thats about what I get on average with WiMax right now in the city, usually between 5-8Mpbs.
  23. I live in Lincoln Park near Diversey and Lincoln and get fine WiMax coverage in and around my apartment. Its on probably 75% of the time. I work in the loop near Mich/Wacker and again I get fine coverage in and around my office, again 75% of the time. The only time I dont get WiMax coverage is in random spots, bad reception areas (elevators, underground red line, basements, deep within building, etc), and of course when I travel probably 20-25+ miles outside of the city proper. I was recently in Pittsburgh for a wedding and had WiMax coverage about 80% of the time where I went all over the city there too.
