Sprint is playing it smart with VoLTE - the reality is it isn't a technology that's fully reached maturity at this point, and there are a lot of other carriers (KT in South Korea, Softbank even in Japan) that are deploying that technology. That will allow Sprint to piggy back and use what they learn to make their own roll out a bit smoother. At the same time, I wouldn't take anything re: network operations that Sprint says right now as gospel, with all of the people leaving and with Son's management style, for all we know this might just become a priority again in a few months

There has been a noticeable improvement in the area N/NE of SJC (e.g., Orchard Parkway).
As for the south part of San Jose, does anyone else feel as if Sprint has forgotten us? 5 LTE updates in the last map update, and zero in the south part of San Jose (and zero in all the ones I can remember for the past several months). I hope one day I leave home and find that a big cluster of LTE sites has been turned on. Would they launch the South Bay market with such a large area still not updated? Areas such as Hamilton Ave near Bascom (with a Sprint corporate store!) with near zero data speeds most of the time...

I honestly feel totally abandoned. My brother and other family all live in Willow Glen and the area has a few 4G only upgrades and nothing else. It's so frustrating when it feels like yours is one of the only areas that is lagging behind, or rather when all around you upgrades are happening and then... nothing. I am in the same situation at UCLA in LA - everyplace around is upgraded, but the two towers on campus are 3G/800 with no dice for LTE.

I have a question for everyone. I have an unlocked Sprint G2, and as you know that means it can be used internationally but not domestically on other networks with foreign Sim cards. I am going to China for the summer, and I'm wondering if I get a China Mobile SIM card, will my G2 connect to their band 41 LTE? What do you all think?

Do any of our Sprint employees know if there are any sales/deals coming up for upgrade customers in the next few weeks? Specifically for the LG G2?

Well, Verizon doesn't do it anymore, and you don't see truckloads of fraud from it. AT&T and T-Mobile never did that. I never said that SIM locking is evil. I said disabling the functionality built into the hardware is. A normal SIM lock works well enough to prevent people from switching operators before the subsidy is paid off. I'm not disputing that at all. Sprint (and previously Verizon) went above and beyond that.
Remember that Verizon only changed it because they were legally obligated to by the FCC as a condition of the digital dividend spectrum they won.

Give me a break, Neal. Doing so on subsidized handsets is not at all "evil." It is a countermeasure against fraud and bad debt.
And basically all Sprint handsets are subsidized. So, Sprint has no reason to enable people to move their partially compatible handsets over to domestic "GSM" operators.
If this is such a stick up your ass, then start drafting a law that would forbid wireless operators from subsidizing, financing, or selling devices. I would love to see that. They all need to get out of the consumer electronics business.
AJ
But Sprint gains back that subsidy over time in service fees, that's why they require a contract. After that contract is up they really have no excuse to keep the device locked.

Is spark active in union square?
Was thinking of going shopping there on Saturday
I believe someone said it was active there.

I have the LG G2 right now. I flashed the 513 PRL. What I am noticing is that the 1x800 tower I get connected to according to the SignalCheck BSL feature is far out but its still within the LA area. If I do a Reset Data Connection on SignalCheck I would find 1x800 and it would stay for like maybe 20-30 seconds and then it would switch back to 1xRTT.
Something has changed recently in Los Angeles, within the last maybe 3-4 weeks. I can no longer stay connected to 1x800 - it will connect for a few seconds with a really strong signal, and then default back to 1900. I'm not sure what's up.
-
What issues are you having so far? I was hoping you'd spot some band 41 already. What about 800 voice?

Is the Nexus 5 already enabled for Band 41? I thought they had disabled it for default for now?

I still am disappointed by the fact that Sprint hasn't moved to CSIM authorization, using a MEID embedded in the UICC (SIM card) that is activated as opposed to each device having to have a MEID.
-
Wouldn't Sprint have to know what is and what is not required for the iPhone 5S/5C? It can't be made up on the spot. I assume it would have to work similarly to the way Verizon works. The MEID is one of the many things that the CSIM card will store by the way.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSIM
CSIM Application File System
The CSIM application contains a file system with a number of parameters needed to operate on cdmaOne/CDMA2000 ("CDMA") networks. Each parameter, or a group of related parameters, is specified with a unique identifier with an implicit or explicit length, and is considered a separate Elementary File (EF). The following examples are taken from the 3GPP2 specification.[1]
- Encryption keys, provisioned by the operator.
- Phone Number.
- Call Counts.
- Short Message Service Parameters.
- Received Short Messages (255 bytes maximum per message).
- IMSI (international mobile subscriber identifier).
- TMSI (temporary mobile subscriber identifier, for position security).
- UIMID (hardware identifier). Will be a pseudo (hashed) value if EUIMID is in use.
- EUIMID. Either short form (based on MEID) or long form (based on ICCID).
- ICCID. Present even if it is not used as EUIMID.
- MEID (hardware identifier).
- Analog (AMPS) operational parameters.
- CDMA2000 home identifiers, such as SID and NID.
- CDMA2000 zone-based registration parameters, telling the handset to register when it changes to a new operator-defined zone (SID/NID).
- CDMA2000 distance-based registration parameters, telling the handset to register when it travels a certain distance (each CDMA2000 transmitter emits its GPS location).
- Random parameters (slot cycle index) to use during CSMA access probes.
- List of services available. If a service is not indicated as available in the CSIM, the mobile equipment shall not select this service. Examples include "Call Control", "SMS", "BCMCS Broadcast", "IP Location", etc. If a service is not in this table, the handset will not provide the service.
- Multimode System Selection (MMSS) parameters.
Bingo - I was just coming back to this thread to post this as I've been thinking about it and I didn't even see that this had already been addressed.
In this case, with a UICC with the CSIM app, the MEID that's activated should be ON THE CARD, so the CARD essentially becomes the device that's activated. If they weren't doing this, there wouldn't been any reason for them to have switched to using CSIM authentication, they could have stayed with a USIM for LTE only.
My assumption is that this is part of Softbank's future plans to take advantage of economies of scale with devices and chipsets. If a device can use a Softbank or China Mobile GSM UICC in Japan and China for their services and a Sprint UICC for service here, the same device might be able to be used across all three markets. That would be a big advantage..
-
Yes, even they need to have the MEID active and correct to work properly. Just because the phone and UICC support CSIM, that doesn't necessarily mean that Sprint's network is setup to allow CSIM-only authentication.
Are they working on it? Do you know?

Even the devices (right now only the iPhone 5S and 5C) with CSIM support require the MEID to be in the system? I thought for CSIM all the information needed for it to authenticate on a CDMA network was stored on the card?

Will the government shutdown delay an agreement for the IBEZ at all?
I doubt it. It's not like the IBEZ agreement is just around the corner.

VoLTE is voice over LTE, not LTE over voice. Regardless the statement was in regards to spectrum. When spectrum is limited in a market, LTE carriers will be deployed over additional voice carriers. Let's try not to confuse the readers into thinking Sprint is jumping on the VoLTE bandwagon.
I think what he's saying is that since Sprint has already said that eventually they'll deploy VoLTE, it makes sense for them to chose LTE over 1x in spectrum constrained markets because eventually they can launch VoLTE in those markets. The other way around of course isn't possible.

Us Apple/Sprint people can only hope.
Starting 2014 China Mobile will REQUIRE support of Band 41 - so either Apple will support it or they won't be on China Mobile.

Are we talking about supporting the CSIM app on the UICC? Because as far as I know we've moved from there being actual SIMs/USIMs/CSIMs to those just being applications on one UICC. SIM of course being for GSM networks, USIM being for UMTS and I guess LTE networks as well, and CSIM being for CDMA networks. I know that Sprint UICCs have SIM and USIM apps on them because USIM is needed for LTE and HSPDA international roaming and SIMs for GSM international roaming.

Then provision the fiber, plug in the LTE module and fibers, integrate, test, then release.
It takes new fiber provisioning for LTE 800?

CDMA 800 is up all around Los Angeles, and I have it right now in Long Beach where I am. I'll check UCLA when I move in.

Has anyone gotten TD LTE in the San Jose area?
Usually there twice a month.
Lately the 4G has become stronger and more reliable. I get LTE pretty much everywhere I go in the South Bay.
I know it is live there in quite a few places.

Is this site 800Mhz? This site has been broadcasting LTE for months. If it is indeed the 800Mhz port connected, would be first confirmed 800Mhz site in San Diego...?
Who's gear is on the bottom rack? It was never there last week. Is it TDD-LTE gear?
Even if it's connected it can't be broadcasting... San Diego is in the IBEZ.

The Ericsson Band 26 FIT was slated to be in the New Orleans market and run concurrent with Samsung's Montana Band 26 FIT. I did get confirmation of the Montana FIT, but never the NOLA one. I also never heard of any ALU Band 26 FIT either.

Do they need to have FITs before they can start deploying?

I doubt LTE 800 is running in New Orleans as they haven't even lit any 1x800 in the metro area of New Orleans yet. Only distant 1x800 sites from the Northshore have been picked up.
That's why I said and maybe NO - I know we know Robert mentioned Montana for sure, but I couldn't remember for sure what the second fit was. I had thought it might be NO.

Just curious, do you guys think that the G2 will get Wifi Calling with this update? What I am really curious about is what makes a device wifi calling compatible? It seems like it is just a question of software, so I am curious why there are specific devices they focus on
Thanks!
