  1. Thank you that is definitely the problem. I always drop calls if I leave streetsboro. That all makes sense! Appreciate it

Once Streetsboro goes live you'll be golden. And I'm sticking with my prediction that March is going to be a huge month for us up here in NEO - LTE just went live on the tower that covers my house...although I'm on wifi at home it's still exciting!

  2. I drop calls every time I come into streetaboro. Why would that happen? It just started to happen after LTE was deployed.

I'm assuming that you're driving from Kent North to Streetsboro. Check out the completed towers map, you're driving from legacy towers in Kent (Motorola) to NV accepted (Samsung) equipment / towers in Streetsboro. It is a well known, well documented issue that Motorola to Samsung equipment (and the inverse) will result in a hard drop because the equipment is not compatible with one another. Trying to avoid the inevitable dropped call issue as much as possible is the reason why we have to wait for clusters of towers to be turned on in our market as opposed to flipping each tower on whenever it's ready.

  3. Yes, I did get a few texts while in standby on wifi. This is probably it. Also, my bars have been a consistent 5 the entire time which means that my phone has not switched to the native tower down the street that provides me 0 coverage. Thank you for your help.

This will work at least while I am at home. I just really didn't want to have to plug my phone in every hour to keep it from being dead if I ever leave the house during the day lol.

I seriously wonder if this would be a solution for my Airave. I couldn't stay connected to it to save my life. I have since moved from the condo I was in where I needed it, in my house now it would just be a convenience and give me coverage in my basement. In the next week or so I'll have to plug it back in and play around with it to see what happens.

FYI, you can see exactly which tower you're connected to by entering the Field Test Mode and checking the Base ID info for both 1x and EVDO (LTE screen have more info). To enter Field Test Mode just dial *3001#12345#* and then call. The Airave Base ID was always something much longer than the tower servicing my house and was easy to see which it was connected to (and more accurate than just looking as signal bars / dots).

  4. I will continue trouble shooting if this doesnt work. Now that my data is off completely, if my phone dies just as fast I will know it is an issue with my phone switching between the native tower, and the airave....or something else and I will go get a new iPhone tomorrow. But I have been sitting here for 47 mins and my phone has gone down 1%. Much better.

Have you noticed if you're still getting push notifications over wifi such as iMessages / emails etc? If so then I think you've found your culprit. If this solution works for you it's certainly not ideal, but at least gives you a piece of mind and a workaround until a better solution can be found.

  5. I will try that. Excellent idea, thanks for testing that out. I was going to do the same but I was more concentrated on studying for an exam. They may have fixed this with iOS 7. Something I did not account for, even though people are reporting similar issues. I am gong to turn cellular data off for the next 3 hours before I leave for class and use my phone normally and see the results.

Thats the best part about theories, they can be proven or disproven... Or new information can change them entirely. Exciting!

I hope it helps. I had battery drain issues with my 4S and it drove me crazy. I finally tracked the issue down to the fact that Skype, Talkatone, and Facebook would keep themselves in an active data session as opposed using the native push notifications that Apple supports. I deleted Skype & Talkatone altogether and killed off Facebook by double clicking menu button and killing it after every use. Miraculously my battery drastically improved - I was losing upwards of 10-15% per hour and after deleting / killing the culprits it dropped to 5-7% per hour even with moderate to heavy use.

Your drain could be due to many things, but losing battery that quickly is very frustrating and I hope you find a solution soon.

  6. I have to disagree. There is a 2 1/2 year old thread on apple forums with 2080 replies, and 732k views with people experiencing the issue of their iPhone randomly using data in standby, even though connected to wifi. I bring you to the specific post by Lawrence Finch. I have read his posts before when having previous issues and the man knows what he is talking about. There is plenty of data in the 150 pages suggesting that it does indeed go back to using data after a specific period of time in standby. But my current issue is that even though I am connected to airave, it is reverting it to 1x when 3g is clearly available as every "now and then" it will connect itself. (this has to be a iPhone issue) Now since we are Sprint customers, we don't have to worry about going over a data limit :rasp: , but I defiantly consider 20% battery loss in less than an hour while on standby a pretty substantial issue.

Re: Unknown data usage early morningNov 1, 2013 1:55 PM (in response to vidro3)

The answer is still on the first couple of pages. As I'm not sure which question you are asking, I will provide 2 answers.

    1. The data is not being sent at the time that it appears to be on the bill. That number is the accumulated data usage for the MTSO (cellular switch) you were connected to at the end of the day. The timestamp is the time the accumulated data was posted to the billing system. It is posted at the time the billing record in the MTSO was closed for the day. If the phone is on at that time it is posted at the time the MTSO resets. If the phone was off or cellular data was off it is posted as soon as it comes back on. It is also both sent and received; the billing system cannot distinguish, so it is all reported as sent.
    2. WiFi is off when the phone is asleep to save battery. If an app sends data when the phone is asleep it goes over cellular.

Anyhow, for now I believe the only fix is to simply deal with it and charge my phone up multiple times a day.... or just unplug the airave (like numerous people in this thread) and not ever make phone calls inside except over FaceTime audio. B26 could not get here soon enough. Looking forwarding to it sleeping in LTE and not 1x lol.

Thank you all for your input. Was worth a try I figured. :tu:

Edit: Or of course I could just get a triband android device....

As much as I trust Lawrence Finch to be the expert in this field, I just tried my own test by turning cellular data off while on wifi, putting the phone in standby for 20 minutes, then sent myself and iMessage from my wife's phone - bing - message came through to my phone instantly. So unless Apple built a test into the software to continuously check to see if there's a cellular connection while in standby and if so turn wifi off to conserve battery (which by the very nature sounds counter-intuitive) I think your theory that using cellular data on 1x even when on wifi is draining your battery is off.

I do, however believe that the phone will still maintain a cellular data connection even when on wifi even though all the data traffic is being pushed over wifi. The fact that you have a very weak cellular signal in your house will cause the battery to drain quickly because it's constantly trying to maintain a connection as a backup source. The Airave *should* solve that problem, but the issue falls on the fact that the Airave is a very spotty device that has countless issues with it (just try and count up the number of Airave threads on S4GRU alone). Frankly I could never get my Airave to work and I spent weeks trouble shooting with Sprint, my ISP, and my own patience to no avail. Your battery drain can be very frustrating and I wish that I had a solution for you, but my advice would be to just turn cellular data off altogether while at home and see if that solves anything for you.

  7. I am almost 99% sure that I am right about that statement. I've done a lot of investigating as when I had my 4s and would turn the phone back on from standby it would take a moment for it to switch from 3G to wifi. That's when I started investigating and found out the tricky fact about iPhones lol.

There was a known bug when iOS 6 was released where the phone would occasionally default to cellular data even when in wifi, but I believe that had been fixed shortly after the initial release (google the reports of Verizon & AT&T customers freaking out - VZW & AT&T ended up waving a bunch of overage charges due to the software glitch). Although you're correct in that when you wake the phone from standby it may take a second for the wifi icon to appear, but I seriously doubt that it's only using cellular data when in wifi, especially considering that the vast majority of iPhone users are on a limited data plan. Put the phone in airplane mode then turn wifi on. Let it go into standby and then wake it, the wifi icon may take a second or two to appear, but you'll still be getting push messages when the phone is in standby which would verify that you still have a data connection over wifi.

If you truly feel that your battery drain issue is that the phone flips to cellular data when in standby while in wifi, just turn cellular data off (settings, cellular, turn off cellular data). I'd be willing to bet you'd still get all of your push mail / messages and if your theory is true then the phone won't be straining to pull data down on 1x.

FWIW, I'm one of those that have had nothing but problems with an Airave - it's on top of my cabinet collecting dust right now.

  8. Guess I didn't full get it... ha. Was at work... multitasking. Shh.

I'm not "emoticon" guy, so my online humor can easily be misinterpreted.

I meant to say thanks to you, Robert, and the rest of the mods for all you do. I don't understand how you all can put so much work into this site to keep it what it is, but it really is appreciated.

  9. I live in elyria. Close to N ridgeville and work in Oberlin. I never got the text. So no "everybody" didnt get it.

Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk

You'll probably get it soon. Float around these forums a bit and you'll see members posting about receiving it all over the country within the past week or so.

  10. Not trying to get anyone down, just trying to be real. We know that work is very far along in Ohio. Likely crews are just waiting on a few straggling sites before they can start firing up clusters. The weather certainly isn't helping.

Once the weather lets up a bit, and crews can get out and do some real work, it likely won't take very long to see some huge improvements.

I just want to make sure people understand that the text doesn't really have anything to do with what's going on with the state of the network in your area.

I understand, and I hope you realize I was only kidding around with my comments. If you pay attention to Cleveland sports at all then a failed promise to deliver an upgraded network in the next few months is nothing new to us.

I don't understand why Sprint thinks it's necessary to send a mass text like that out to everybody; I guess somebody made the decision to throw a quick "don't run yet, we're almost there" blanket over everybody's eyes in hopes they'll keep holding on. I truly do believe we have some major upgrades in our market right around the corner, we just need all the planets to line up in perfect order and a freak lightning storm to settle in and we'll be all set.

  11. That text went out to almost every Sprint subscriber. Even ones who no longer live in a Sprint coverage area. The consensus is it is just marketing, and doesn't mean much. Don't get expectations up too much.

Hey man, call us ignorant but we're eternal optimists in Cleveland; we take even the smallest positive and run with it. Take for instance our motto: there's always next year...if we focused on reality (negativity) we would all just wither away into balls of anger and hatred.

FWIW, I just got the text too, and I'm excited!

  12. Nextel had extensive coverage in Gesuga and Ashtabula counties? Did Sprint forefit their 800MHz privileges when iDEN folded?

Sprint didn't give up the 800 MHz privileges, but Nextel was able to broadcast within the IBEZ because the bandwidth Nextel needed to operate on was much more narrow than was is required for 1x, and especially for LTE. I know I'm off on my lingo, but I look at it this way: Nextel needed an off road, gravel path to operate their PTT whereas LTE needs a 4 lane highway. Because LTE (and even 1x) require much more bandwidth, they need to work with our Canadian counterparts to ensure there's no interference.

I'm not optimistic that we'll see band 26 (800 MHz LTE) in our area anytime soon, but we've got some sort of exception in place to operate 1x800, which by itself will greatly improve Sprints native footprint even if it's only on 1x.

  13. actually it's called being nice and helping someone out...I doubt everyone posting here is a sponsor otherwise it would not let me post. if someone would be nice and let me know it would be appreciated

You obviously don't have to be a Sponsor to post, just a member (which is no cost). But the info that becomes available to you once you become a Sponsor is astonishing.

Believe me, I'm with you - I never give my money to unknown sources online simply because somebody told me to. It took me a good 6 months of floating around these forums before I was comfortable enough to give my money, but as you can see from my info I've now donated enough to reach Premier Sponsorship level. Once again, the info that would be made available to you is well worth the price of a McDonalds Value meal with a side six piece of McNuggets w/ Sweet & Sour sauce (it's lunch time now and I'm thinking about food).

  14. can't a sponsor be nice enough and tell me?

This site wouldn't exist without Sponsor donations, therefore the info you're looking to obtain wouldn't be available to Sponsors if it weren't for the donations. It would be sort of like trying to go to the library and check out books but never paying taxes to support the library.

Sponsorship is the cost of a lunch out, it's not going to break the bank - and the information provided will be well worth it, trust me.

  15. It could not have picked up channel 150 because there is nothing CDMA2000 there to pick up. Channel 150 is right smack in the middle of AT&T's PCS A block license. See the FCC license linked below:

    http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/license.jsp?licKey=8908

My guess is that you caught the screen in the midst of a scan.

    AJ

Well thank you for shattering my dream of making a positive contribution to S4GRU with your wealth of knowledge, AJ...back to the drawing board I guess.

  16. It comes out the same either way, as the uplink and downlink are inherently paired. That 80 MHz FDD offset is standard in the PCS band.

    AJ

Weird, I'm using Digi's PRL 513, I wonder if my phone somehow picked up channel 150 but never actually registered a connection (if you look at the screen shot I don't show the typical 3G icon, just 1x). It's an iPhone 5 (CDMA version obviously).

  17. First time I've ever seen channel 150 used in our market (Cleveland) for EVDO:

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1390602427.666477.jpg.

Using AJ's calculations from his article a few months ago, this would be 1850 + (.05*150)=1857 MHz (could be way off, but that's my college try at understanding it).

I don't have time to look at the former Revol licenses that were transferred to Sprint, can anybody confirm if this is a new carrier from the Revol license acquisition?
