  1. I just had a thought - how difficult would it be to add wifi info to the app in addition to cellular? I have a dual band router with the same SSID for both bands and I'm always curious to know which band I'm on without having to log into the router. Signal strength in dBm as well as the channel within the band you're connected to would be useful info as well.

  2. Ok. I misunderstood what you had typed. How's VZW & T-Mo working?

I was probably confusing when I mentioned AT&T's "strongest signal" - I was just joking about their new add campaign and how frivolous a strong signal truly is but how much of a big deal AT&T has made it.

I have a data only TMobile SIM that was activated on an iPad, the one that gives 100 MB of data per month for no charge so I can't really run around town running Speed tests. Plus it's just in my Sprint iPhone 5 so it's only able to grab the HSPA+ around here. However the one speed test I ran was 12 down and 3 up and from what I can tell they have pretty decent coverage. TMobile is on the same tower as Sprint to cover my house but for some reason they've done a better job optimizing because there's a good 10 dbm better difference on TMobile.

VZW has the area blanketed in LTE, I haven't dropped to 3G once. Speeds on band 13 aren't crazy though - but I've only run two tests and one was 2/4 down/up and the second was 8/4 but I know they have band 4 all over the place so that's running better, I just can't get it on my 5.

  3. Yep. I used T-Mobile yesterday, and I'm using cricket today. I haven't tried another provider around here in at least 18 months other than briefly in a burner prepaid phone. I'm trying to see what all the hoopla is about, but I just don't see it.

Didn't you hear? AT&T (Cricket) has created the "strongest signal" in America!

I got my old iPhone 5 unlocked and there's something fun about plugging in different SIMs to play around with the different networks.

  4. He would need any 15x15 and 20x20 to get the reading. Unfortunately, I think unless you have the source code or access to the underlying core telephony files, you wouldn't be able to see the right measurement. Only Nahum has that right now.

Yeah, I don't speak in source code or core telephony files....I probably can't help.
  5. Those numbers may work for those situations, but you should gather data from a 15x15 T-Mobile and a 20x20 T-Mobile/Verizon just to see if a pattern follows.

What details would you need? I could get engineering screenshots from VZW 20x20 band 4, 5x5 band 2, 10x10 band 13, and TMobile band 4 (not sure of BW in my area), and perhaps TMobile band 1.

Edit: on second thought I don't really know how to read the TMobile engineering screens, they're totally different than Sprints and VZWs, so I'll need some direction there.

  6. You on the 8.3 betas? My phone is glitching all over the place and I got 3 hours of battery usage today, even with all jailbreak packages besides Cydia removed. It might be time to leave the jailbreak behind and jump onto 8.3. The restore should also unlock my phone if Sprint actually followed through with what they said.

For anyone that's waiting on the CellularInfo jailbreak features: don't worry I have a spare jailbroken iPhone 5 that I use to test CellularInfo. ;)

I may have missed something, but does this mean you're creating a non-JB version as well? All of my devices are already upgraded to 8.1.3, so no JB for me, and the beta version you put together is awesome and has everything I need.

  7. Anybody know how to stop Google maps voice directions from playing thought my vehicle's Bluetooth? I know the obvious, turn off Bluetooth. But I was hoping to just use Bluetooth for phone calls.

Another method is that when you're navigating, touch the three dots in the lower right, then mute. Unfortunately that turns all audio directions off, but at least it won't go through your speakers.
  8. Everyone says the unlock requires iTunes and a restore. So that's not the case?

I was ready to go through the restore process, but I figure is just give the SIM a shot before going down that long and lonely road...and it worked! It's an inactive device and I'd reset and restored the phone previously - I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

This is the link that was in the email from Sprint: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5014

And even though the instructions say to back up and restore, I didn't have to for some reason.

  9. Did you have to restore your iPhone? My 6+ is supposedly ISU'd but I can't use any other SIMs in it. I'd rather not restore because I value my jailbreak haha

No, I got an email from the Sprint international unlock department saying that in the next 4 hours my phone should be unlocked. I then plugged in the TMobile SIM, turned the phone off and back on and it worked.

  10. I went through the international unlock department and was able to get my iPhone 5 unlocked for domestic carrier use. All told it was a frustrating experience and I had to go through a few reps, but in the end I'm super excited to finally get my old phone unlocked. For what it's worth the reps that I spoke with said it would only be for international use, but I popped in both a TMobile & Verizon SIM and both worked flawlessly:

  11. I just took off my Invisibleshield Glass because it cracked white it was in my jacket pocket [emoji19].

If you're not already aware most brands are guaranteed for the life of your device (Zagg for example). They'll send you a replacement and you just need to pay ~$4.95 for shipping & handling and return the cracked product.
  12. Has anyone been experiencing this issue. My home button is overly clicky, like before I even click it exactly it makes this obnoxious click noise and then when I do click it it will double click. I don't know how to explain, lol it basically clicks on soft touches, its annoying as hell,

I'll probably have them look at it when I go on Sunday.

If they're replacing your screen then your home button / Touch ID will be replaced as well. My Touch ID was working maybe 40% of the time, but since I've had my screen replaced I haven't had it fail once.

  13. Well, so far she is able to text and nothing is showing up on My Sprint as being an additional charge. I did tell her to turn off iMessage and not make phone calls.

I chatted with Sprint and of course they were nearly useless. Said that texts would cost 20 cents per text regardless...but clearly, they are wrong!

EDIT: What about sending pictures? Will that cost anything?

MMS messages use data, so if she's not going to get a local SIM and she doesn't want to pay the crazy data roaming rates, she can just go to Settings - Cellular - Roaming - and turn off data roaming. That way she can leave iMessage running but it will only send / receive iMessages when there's a valid data connection (if she's connected to wifi), everything else should be sent through SMS. She'll need to go in Settings - Messages - and turn on Send as SMS for that to work though.

  14. We do have the Framily plan. She will have a work phone for calls, but is mostly concerned about personal texting. Thanks for the info so far!

This is probably stating the obvious, but don't forget that iMessage will use data so she'll need to either turn off iMessaging or ensure that data roaming is turned off on her iPhone. Unless of course she picks up a local Sim card. In that case, she will then get a new cell number which can add a bit of confusion. Personally when I travel I like the local Sim card so I can use my phone as is and I just warn people to look out for my new number when I'm texting them and / or use my email address as my iMessage caller ID. If she plans to get a local SIM, she needs to have Sprint unlock the phone for international use ahead of time.

When I travelled to Canada a couple of years ago I bought a Rogers SIM on eBay and then purchased a top-up card after arrival to activate it (unfortunately I wasn't able to activate it until arrival - at least at that time). You can get top up cards in pretty much any convenient store. Rogers had good coverage everywhere and a decent prepaid plan - not as cheap as some of the others previously mentioned, but data coverage was excellent wherever I went and prepaid worked well and was easy to maintain.

  15. I'm usually super cautious but yesterday I was sitting in the car I had my phone in my lap and I just forgot it was there cause I had other things in my hand. I already told my mom she said I gotta wait so until then I'll be sitting around with the crackle jackle iPhone 6. I'm kinda embarrassed to have a cracked 6 and I only had it for a month.

Ironically enough it landed right on the concrete and there's not a scratch or scuff on the back or the sides. The screen took the full load of damage, and tbh it didn't even crack that bad either. I think my thick privacy screen helped a little, but now when I get a new screen at least the phone itself won't look mad ugly with scratches and scuffs.

I was caseless as well - well, I had a dbrand skin on it to help with scratches and to give better grip, but essentially caseless. Saturday my 1 year old swiped my phone out of my hand onto our tile floor. It landed on the upper right corner, cracking the screen. It was just a slight crack, but a crack nevertheless.

Rewind to a few weeks ago I had read that there's a manufacturing defect with the front facing camera and that it will slide out of position, creating a slight crescent moon shape. Because it's a manufacturing defect Apple is replacing the screen at no charge. Sure enough my phone has the problem - it didn't impact the pictures at all and was barely noticeable so I didn't do anything about it...until I cracked the screen. I set a genius appointment yesterday afternoon citing the camera flaw and they replaced the screen at no charge. I think had my crack been larger or more noticeable they may have challenged me, but they didn't ask a word. I was in and out in under an hour.

Side benefit: my Touch ID was previously always hit or miss; I just thought it was how it functioned. Since the screen has been replaced my Touch ID has been flawless. Needless to say I'm back in a case and I just had a Zagg Invisible glass put on the new screen last night (Best Buy price matches Amazon, so I got it for $15 with free application).

  16. It's hard to get used to. I personally hate the rounded edges. I miss those sharp, chamfered edges that provided nice grip on the 5/5s

    It's a slippery son of a gun without a case - I think I've found a great solution though: https://dbrand.com/

It's a skin but it's been great because it's as minimal as you get while actually adding just enough grip that the phone is not nearly as slippery.

  17. I've been seeing it on the iMore forums too. People are putting their iPads down for the 6/6+ more and more. I think Apple kind of underestimated what they were doing with bigger screen iPhones.

I've actually had the opposite experience, I've been using my iPad mini even more frequently now with the interoperability between devices. I have the cellular model, so I can use the mini all day and save my iPhone 6's battery.(Sorry to bring back a topic that's a few days old...)

  18. Request for opinions, I read the iPad 2.1amp charger charges a 6+ much faster but do you think the battery life will be better with the standard charger? I mean the time before the battery needs replacing not how long one charge lasts.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Everything I've read about lithium ion batteries in smart phones, 2.1 amp has no negative effect on your battery. It's all I use anymore because it charges soooo much faster and I haven't noticed any negative ramifications on any of my phones / tablets.

  19. The google maps update today is phenomenal. It's beautiful looking. I was comparing it to the version on my m8. Google has made the iOS version nicer than their android version. That's sad, but great for us.

I totally agree, I just wish there was a way to use Google Maps as the default Map though.

  20. I can originate a message from my phone number associated with iMessage on my Mac; why would this be different? Data is data.

So can I - and in fact that's the setup I have on my iPhone, Mac Mini & iPad. But as a perfect example I took the SIM card out of my iPhone the other night and swapped it for another (I managed to get an Apple SIM from the Apple Store so I was testing it out in my phone), then replaced my original. I then sent an iMessage from my Mac Mini to my brother and the caller ID switched itself to my Apple ID (email address) from my cell number. Then when I texted (iMessaged) my brother from my iPhone the next day the outgoing caller ID showed up as my Apple ID (email address) even though I was texting from my phone. I'm always having these issues with iMessage. (I know, delete the thread and start a new one and your ID should reset itself, but it's just a pain).

My concern is that when you're constantly switching carriers on your iPad, what effect does that have on you outgoing caller ID? I'm guessing that as long as your iPhone remains intact and that number is your outgoing caller ID on all devices you should be ok, but I don't have an iPad Air 2 so I can't test it....hence the question.
