  1. My opinion in the whole Priority mode is that they basically "Windows 8"ed us Android users, i.e. taking something that people know and got used to and moving it somewhere else without any warning and the requirement of prior knowledge of the details of the update or the Googling of the answer to know what to do. For example, pressing down on the volume rocker multiple times to silence the phone is just as standard as finding the "Shutdown" button in the start menu of Windows since Windows 95.

Microsoft decided that Windows 8 will have this new and "awesome" Charms bar, and that's where they'll hide the power options for Shutdown, Restart, and Sleep... Literally, hide. The first time I got Windows 8, I had to Google something as basic as how to shutdown the computer. Yes, it's doable, but was it really necessary to move it? Obviously, public reaction to the power options, among a host of other things, was indisputably negative. Eventually, in the Windows 8.1 Update, they returned the power options to the Start Screen, where it's obvious, and in my opinion, where it belongs.

Same thing with the Silence mode. Yes, it can be achieved still in Lollipop, but was it really necessary to change how it's been done ever since cell phones have existed? Haven't they learned from Windows 8's mistakes that people don't like to change something that should be as basic as silencing the phone?

I apologize for my rant, but even though I'm OK with this Priority mode (since I Googled it and know the answer already), I know a lot of people won't be, simply because of the fact that it takes a Google search to figure it out. I come from a background of web design, even though I'm currently a firmware engineer, and both the Windows 8 power options and Android Lollipop silence mode changes are huge User Interface blunders in my book. The UI's only job is to make things easier for a casual user. The fact that a user has to Google something to do something basic means the UI is failing. With that said, I'll be glad if Silent mode is back in 5.1. Windows 8 learned from their mistakes, it's only natural if Android does as well.

Like I said earlier, silent mode looks the same to me in 5.0.1 as it does it 5.0.....in it's new "Microsoft" location. Great analogy btw.

Unless I'm looking at this wrong, it didn't change with this update.

  2. no.  priority works so you can set certain calls to come through etc which is great and i use it.

BUT sometimes you don't want anything to come through and don't want to have to go in there and change the priority settings knowing you're gonna have to go back in and change them back later.

I just looked at it and alarms definitely show under priority. I get what you're saying though that you might have to constantly make changes to the priority settings in order to get the desired outcome.

Personally I'm not a fan of the "None Priority All" settings but for my purposes it's essentially the same. I can see where this would be a nuisance for some though.

  3. correct. people want to have their alarm go off and still not be bugged my other notifications

Isn't that what priority mode is for? I haven't played with it much but I think you can configure that into the mode, it sucks to have to so that much configuration for something that used to be a one click and done automatic kind of thing but I believe the desired functionality can be achieved with some effort.

  4. Android 5.1 Lollipop is expected to be a rather large update, returning the silent mode missing from Android 5.0, improving system stability, RAM management and battery management, and fixing sudden app closures, Wi-Fi problems and sound problems.

    http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/features/google-android/3514191/android-5.0-lollipop-release-date-new-features-upgrades-android-5.1/

Silent mode wasn't missing, unless we're talking about two different things but silent could be achieved by pressing the volume rocker buttons and then selecting "none" on the screen. I'm on 5.0.1 and verified that nothing has changed with regard to that. Silent still can't be achieved with the rocker buttons alone....unless it's somewhere else in the OS I'm not aware of, the on screen and rocker behavior is the same as before the 5.0.1 release.

  5. I really hope that this fixes an issue I am seeing with connecting to my Wifi hotspot.. Everytime the phone sees the hotspot, it would not autoconnect - Just says 'Wifi network available'. I have to click on it to connect to the hotspot. Already tried the 'Use the network as is' option to no avail..

I have the same problem at my office. Flashed 5.0.1 yesterday and the problem is now solved.

  6. 5.0.1 doesn't even have factory images for the Nexus 5. Only the Nexus 7 (2013), 9, and 10 have this update so far. I did get the OTA for my Nexus 7 this Sunday, and it's been working fine so far.

Thanks for the insight, I read somewhere that it was coming for the 5 too but have since found that to be inaccurate as confirmed again here by you.

    Appreciate the response!

  7. My phone has been hanging to 1x800 all morning long here in Greenwood Village. Are they testing? I've cycled through airplane mode several times, defaults to 800.

David or one of the other SRGRU Staff/ In the know types will have to correct me on this I'm sure but I can tell you my N5 does this as well. Seems like it's something with the phone, maybe in the PRL? Once I grab onto 1x800 it stays on 800 until the signal completely drops and then it'll grab a 1xRTT (1900) signal.

Of course, it could be that you and I are just smoking crack but it sure seems like there is something to it.

  8. You make it sound like you will be disappointed with the LTE service Sprint will provide. Sprint has already provided ample bandwidth for HD streaming with its previous 4G iteration. It stands to reason it can deliver more ample bandwith with a technology like LTE and the 3 different bands of it. I'm not making a case for myself. I understand it is unnecessary to have a 6+ Mbps broadband connection on a mobile phone. The constant bashing of sprint from people that demand more than 3 Mbps for their phone is unreasonable. You asked for a reason why anyone would need more than that and I gave it to you. I only said I was hoping for 6, made no demands for anything more than that. I'll take 3 Mbps, hell I've managed with 200 kbps so far. After all, it's the mobile phone and texting capabilities that I even need a phone. Though if Sprint wants to keep its business it will have to deliver those speeds to those unreasonable people that demand 30 Mbps because Verizon or AT&T have it.

You completely misread posts. I'm more than satisfied with Sprint's LTE and am making a point to all of those that continue the statements of "less than impressive". I'm more than clear on what to expect and not expect. Just asking that others look at usage "needs" before making those kinds of comments.
  9. You'd need around 5 for watching HD videos without buffering. That said, I'm hoping for 6 after all is said and done. Reasonable for everything I like to do with my phone. Which is around what WiMax was giving me.

Call me odd but I stream HD at home or in the office when I'm on WiFi. Can't think of a time when I've been off of a WiFi signal that I needed or even wanted to stream HD. I understand that the situation arises but again put emphasis on whether or not that is a strong enough need to necessitate a strong disappointment in network performance. If so, then the previous comments about waiting for broader acceptance of LTE still stands.

  10. I got the following text from Sprint yesterday-

    Which links to-

We do indeed get LTE at home (near cheesman park) but speeds are less than impressive, around 3mbps.

I challenge anybody to prove that they actually NEED more than that.

I'll echo what others say. Until every tower is done, you have congestion issues. Not only that but that's light speed compared to what we saw all over town 4 months ago. Progress it is.

  11. If this market was still Qwest I believe the backhaul would have been completed in that time frame, as badly managed as Qwest was. In my time as a contractor I have never seen a company that holds on to pennies as much as Centurylink does, and they're even getting paid for the work, imagine if they weren't. Out of 40 ISP jobs I did for them only a handful were completed and the rest were pushed back because of budgeting.

Call center I manage used to buy a lot through Qwest. We had several QMOE connections between facilities and data centers etc. We upgraded that recently and purchased additional DS3 service. It got so bad (delays and other issues) that we moved all of our business to XO.

It's sad to see Century Link be this way. Had been optimistic with their acquisition of Qwest.....in hind sight that was foolish.

  12. Hey guys, quick question for the N5 community. I apologize in advance if this was already covered, I searched through this thread and didn't find anything that addressed this, so I was hoping you guys could assist.

I am stock rooted on KOT49H but have flashed the .15 radio. When the 4.4.3 upgrade comes out, do I need to return to full stock build (.23 radio) before upgrading or will it not matter? If I need to go back to full stock I'm ok with that, done it several times already!

Thank you in advance for the help!

Edit - To be more specific: Will the 4.4.3 upgrade take me off of .15 onto the newest radio (assuming there is a radio release within 4.4.3) or will I stay on .15? Additionally, in order to go to the newer radio, will I first need to be on .23/stock to have the upgrade. work. Does this make sense or am I talking in circles?

  13. How about a 1x800 victory story. Everybody is commenting on sites along Hampden and into the tech center going live.....get along of this 1.21 gigawatt story of awesomeness.

I'm at the Los Dos Portrillos Mexican restaurant at Holly and County Line. Basically between Quebec and University on 470. That's a little ways away from Ulster in the tech center at 25 and 225. How many towers are closer than that.....anybody? Bueller.....a shitload. But here I am. Getting 1x800 in the restaurant from the tower on Ulster.

  14. What's 3 glte? :frantic:

Other than the awesome typo, I believe what Santa is trying to say is that in order for a Spark device (tri-band) to function correctly and take advantage of all available bands a few things have to happen:

-CSFB issues need to be resolved via software on towers in the area. This typically happens after a tower has been NV accepted. There's a great article on the wall from back in November about this.

-Band 41 or 26 have to also be available and live in the area otherwise only Band 25 LTE will be available to the handset assuming LTE services have launched.
