  1. Does anyone know if any of these upgrades will actually improve reception in a given spot? I've lived in a 1-bar Sprint area for many years and am just curious if, when the upgrades are turned on, I will notice any difference. Like, might I then see 2 or 3 bars all of the sudden? It would be great to not have my battery drain before my eyes as the phone trys to keep a network connection, which is what happens if I'm not on the Airave. Better reception is all I hope to get out of these changes, and i could care less about LTE and improved data speeds as I am on WiFi all the time at home.

NV also includes adding 1xadvanced to the 800 spectrum, which will help with signal strength for voice. I don't know the timeline, but there are a few sites that already have it added.

  2. Has this changed in the last 5 days? I'd like to get a new phone and my Mom lives around 99th and Roe. Thjis seems to be a dead spot for EVDO and Wimax. LTE might be better. I'd like some info before I change.

LTE should be similar to what you get with EVDO. Maybe a little bit better with RRUs. Currently, the LTE phones are switching back to 3G when the LTE signal weakens. Sprint will make some adjustments to the ratios that determine weather or not to switch back to 3G, but they haven't so far.

LTE should be better than Wimax unless the Wimax tower is closer than the Sprint tower.

  3. Yes. From what I understand from sprint is that Samsung/Ericson applied a patch to NV and legacy towers that prevents 1x handoffs from legacy to nv or nv to legacy towers unless absolutly necessary. It seems like it hangs on to a signal when going across the "boundery" until it is gone. My phone would sometimes roam when that would happen. It didn't seem to effect 3g service at all. Once the legacy towers were upgraded that stopped.

Do you think Samsung will switch to doing LTE first instead of 3G? Ericsson has been doing their markets with LTE first. I haven't heard of the issues with their markets. Of course, when they start moving 3G to the new equipment, maybe they will have problems also.

I don't think Alcatel \Lucent has had the issue in their markets and I believe they are doing 3G first. Maybe it's just a Samsung problem. I hope they figure it out before moving to new markets. Chicago users have really been through some bad experiences with this upgrade process. If it happens again, Sprint should probably look at different options.

  4. I'm jealous.....I can't even get an LTE connection yet....wonder if its this phone....

I think there is an issue with the new EVO. the last couple speed tests i did were showing terrible speeds when I finally would get connected to LTE. My brother in-law was standing right be side me and was getting 12 - 15 mb down with his evo. I rebooted my phone and did another speed test and got the same speeds he was getting. No idea what was causing the issue.

My phone also seems to struggle to stay connected to LTE even with a strong LTE signal.

  5. .66 mbps Down, 9.07 mbps up. In St Joseph Missouri on full bars Lte. Not a good showing for my first taste of lte... I will post screen shots when I f figure out how to on the GS III

I had the same thing happen tonight on the tower closest to me. In the past, I've got 10 to 15 mb on the same site. Tonight .7 to 1.4.

It has had LTE for awhile, but it still hasn't made the completed towers list that Robert has in the sponsor section. I'm guessing Sprint hasn't accepted the tower as complete. Probably still some work to be done.

  6. I posted about this earlier in the thread. It appears there might be a device setting that always picks the stronger signal even if the 4G signal is acceptable. I don't remember having these types of issues with my original Evo when WiMax was just being launched. I almost feel that if the device isn't next to an LTE blow-torch, it doesn't stay connected. The only time I was connected for any reasonable amount of time, I had full signal. If I even have as low as half, the device switches to 3G.

I do remember having some issues with Wimax on the OG evo connecting with low signal strength. It seemed liked after having Wimax in my area for awhile, they changed the threshold that would allow Wimax to connect and stay connected.

  7. I have been in the D.C area over the past few days. To be more specific Richmond, Virgiana. I know that the D.C market is a 1st round market for Sprint. During my trip I noticed great signal. I had almost 4 to 5 bars my entire trip on both my iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus. Also running several speed tests I was able to get constant speeds of 1-1.5 Mbps on both devices. During these speed tests I know I was connected to an eHRPD network on my Galaxy Nexus but I am unsure on my iPhone 4S. Will post pictures once I downsize them to smaller files.

The phone has to be an LTE phone to connect to eHPRD, so the iphone will connect to evdo

  8. So under this scenario, whereas before the backhaul was blamed as the choke point, now it is not having enough spectrum allocated for data at a given cell tower? Yikes! If this were, this would be typical of Sprint. :(

However, since they are supposedly launching LTE in markets without every single tower upgraded, I would hope that at towers already upgraded and live with 4G, they would also have upgraded the EVDO side as well and have it live. As new towers come online to finish out the 4G footprint in a market with the remaining towers, the 3G would also get finished out. If not, again :(

Now, in spite of the above, I remember in the June update that there was a backlog of EVDO going live even at NV sites due to issues at switch center? If this is indeed still the issue, then it will be interesting to see how long before 3G gains the benefits of NV too!

I would say it's backhaul, not spectrum.

  9. Thanks bro, and your right...I'll give it a coupe days and see what happens.

I think the target percent complete for the LTE launch is 40%, so it will take some time before an entire city is complete. The NV\LTE running list thread has some information on percent complete. I'm not sure how recently it was updated though.

  10. From what I've seen on the sponsor maps, it looks like Ericsson is focusing on LTE since they have most of the initial launch markets. 3G is probably still on the old backhaul. I would guess in the very near future, Ericsson will get 3G moved over to the new backhaul.

I'm sure they have been pushing hard to get as many LTE towers done for the July 15th launch.

  11. I have to think Sprint made sure 800 would be on future models when they signed the deal. 800 seems to be a pretty big deal for them in the future to improve service and to bring them to ATT/Verizon level.

The 4S was pretty much a 4 with a better processor and ram, plus siri. I doubt they tried to add any antennas or frequencies to it. The iPhone 6 will be a complete refresh.

I agree. If Sprint is paying apple 15 billion over 4 years, I would hope they added a few requirements to the mix.

  12. Have not been able to connect 4G from home, so went to the location where I had previously connected 4G ( 135st and Neiman). I connected 4G after toggling to CDMA and back to LTE. I tried to do a speed test, but it would not complete.

There is more work to be done in this area... :)

I got connected and ran a few speed test from the tower at 135 and Switzer. Posted the pic in a different thread though.

  13. I had the same problem and just downloaded it again.

I had the same issue. I went back into the update software screen and hit check now again. It popped with a messaging saying i have to install later since my battery is below 35%.

Once I charged it up, the install loaded fine.

  14. I think you're offering up good advice. Your friend sounds a bit set in his ways, so I would make sure that the decision is ultimately his. Nothing would be more aggravating than having your friend locked into a 2 year contract complaining to you about something he doesn't like.

Since data speeds seem to be a big part of the issue with Sprint service, do you know if he has wifi at his primary locations (home, office)?

He could try out a new Sprint Win 8 phone for a couple of weeks and return it if he doesn't like it.

  15. My apologies to our several central Kansas residents in the forum, but I cannot believe that VZW bothered to put out a press release for its LTE expansion into McPherson. Nevertheless, here it is:

I grew up in Hutchinson, which is pretty close to McPherson. Alltel was huge (huge probably the wrong word for a small town) in that area. My whole family and most friends had Alltel and now Verizon. Maybe they're just throwing the old Alltel people a bone with some LTE so they don't feel as bad when their bills keep going up.

  16. I went on a nerd-quest last night around 9:30 pm to 135th and Switzer, where kckid reported getting LTE signals, and nothing... nothing but a really strong 3G signal!! I live by WOF in a 60-year-old neighborhood, and I know that Network Vision is working in our part of town, but still no LTE of course north of the Missouri River or Downtown (where I work) yet. At this rate, I'm really starting to miss WiMax....

I did the same thing on Sunday with no luck on getting LTE. I started at the tower in Blackbob Park and head up 35 to Shawnee Mission Parkway.

I live in the 135 and Switzer area, but haven't got an LTE signal yet. I've only had my phone for a few days though. I'll keep checking on it.
