  1. When I was in Buckingham County a few weeks ago, I had no issue with US Cellular. And, of course, my parents' house down in Charlotte County has nothing but US Cellular and it worked fine there.

What's interesting, though, is that my US Cellular phone will not roam on nTelos at all, and prefers Verizon in those areas.

    - Trip

I went through expecting for it to kick over once I passed over the James River bridge like normal but no go. I saw it light up "Extended LTE" for 1 second and then went to 1X. I tried switching Airplane Mode on and off a few times but nothing as well.

I personally love roaming on USCC but these days I seem to only get VZW roaming.

  2. Has anyone been having roaming issues lately? I noticed with the last carrier settings update I no longer am able to roam on US Cellular LTE in Buckingham County where Sprint has no native service. Was working fine a few weeks ago. Now it's 1X only [emoji24] I also noticed my phone seems to prefer Verizon versus US Cellular, problem with VZW is no data roaming at all anymore..

I would love to see this at my house, Lake Monticello has only had B25 deployed so you have huge holes throughout the Lake area as you go between the 3 towers and a typical speed is about 2-3 Mbps. Usable for sure but at one time I got a consistent 25 mbps.

I'm all for Shentel and that's why I'm sticking around with Sprint but they are really going to have to pick it up on Charlottesville in B26 deployment and faster speeds. I don't want to see the network turn to a 2011 era nTelos 3G

  4. Went to Waynesboro this evening and connected to the Band 41 site that I actually connected to The first time we were able to access the nTelos network. Was pulling 50mbps at that point and it's sad to see what you get now. Speeds have been pretty mediocre in the Shentel areas but Waynesboro used to be the nTelos bread and butter.

  5. Is there Band 41 in Myrtle Beach yet? Was down about two months ago(I live in VA) and stayed at some family property in Surfside and still no Band 41. I have been hoping for major Sprint network improvement at the beach but I always get disappointed with poor speeds. I use T-Mobile as well and where that doesn't work great in VA they seem to have their stuff together in the MB area!

I complain about the speeds on Sprint but anything is better than 2011-2012 before "network vision" when 3G wouldn't even send an iMessage

  6. Probably more likely less site density than big cities, but the more spectrum that comes online, the better everyone's experience will be. For instance, as B26 comes online, B25 speeds will increase. As B41 comes online, B25 speeds will increase.

I'm excited to see what the future holds. I hit 150mbps one time on a Clearwire B41 site in Short Pump last year but the max speed I have ever seen in Charlottesville was 50mbps.

  7. Glad to see some good speeds on B41! I have noticed more B41 going on in Charlottesville recently and I was using my Samsung so I was able to see from SCP. I have seen at least three sites in the past month get B26 so that's a good thing.

There is a spot around Lake Monticello where I lose service and just recently will catch USCC Band 12 roaming so that's new to this area. Why are our speeds slower than big metros? Low spectrum? Backhaul?

  8. Also, the only way I was actually able to get a ticket submitted was to tweet the CEO. I got a response back within a few minutes and the "customer advocacy group" called the next day and let me know that a ticket was placed and the apologized about support not knowing about the affiliate markets.

  9. Got a call from a network tech regarding the ticket I submitted. He stated that they contacted Shentel network techs and that the problem should be resolved. He didn't elaborate on what it was even when I asked so I'm not sure what the deal really was. I did a speed test and things seem back to normal

  10. Did you change your DNS? If that is what you think is causing the slow down. I know you can change it on android (and apple on wifi?? at least a quick google search) but you need a msl code on android. And the DNS settings reset themselves after some kind of update (prl ,system, or some other update).

If you live on the east side of town that is probably a Richmond market site they are seeing 7 1/2 miles away still not a nTelos site.  I personally don't call/talk to support they don't seem to know anything pretty much just reading from a book.

I didn't change my DNS but I did do a "Reset Network Settings" from support. I normally do not use this option as it messes with my wifi passwords and such but was desperate for a fix.

It seems to only be an issue for Sprint users. nTelos phones using the same site have the "normal" speeds and pings so I cant think of anything that would cause issues for us other than provisioning on Sprint's end.

You are exactly right about the Richmond Market site that they were talking about. It is the Zion Crossroads site. I went out the other night and ran a quick speed test and got a ping of 59 speeds are always so-so due to the amount of users on that one site. It just shocks me though that support has no clue about their affiliate markets when Shentel is branded under the Sprint name.

  11. I talked to Sprint customer support tonight, Didn't leave me with a good taste in my mouth as I was hung up on during transfers twice and when I do actually get to "Advanced Technical Support" I was told that the nearest Sprint tower from me is 7 1/2 miles and that they cannot see any Sprint towers located in Charlottesville. Trying to explain the affiliate market situation didn't work either.

What do you guys do when you have to call support? I tried to explain my situation with the high pings and low speeds and get that they do not service my area when clearly there is a Shentel owned tower less then half a mile from my home.

    Ugh. Rant over

  12. I'm no expert, but is it possible an Internet line went down in that area and traffic is being temporarily rerouted through a much slower connection?

I know the basics of Cellular and networking and we always do have internet problems in CVille but that wouldn't explain why an nTelos phone gets a low ping and I have a high when we are at the exact same B25 tower at the same time.

  13. I think Shentel is working on the network at this point. I had LTE up until about 2 or 3 months ago I use to have LTE in my office at my house in Greene which is between Standardsville and Ruckersville and use to get Band 25. Then I lost it. Yesterday I am able to pick up Band 26 in my office at the house, as well as the kitchen and part of the living room.

I understand that they are doing work on the network but what is happening just doesn't make sense. I am all for Band 26 deployment but in these city areas it struggles to keep up with demand. We need more 41 sites and I understand they are new to this and trying to fix the nTelos mess that was left for them but I don't understand why things were working great like they should and then sites are disappearing and now high pings.

I don't come here to bash Sprint or Shentel I just know you guys know more than I do but I would just love to see some real improvement because all of us have been waiting a long time

Now I think something is really up. It could just be me with a big conspiracy theory but I took a speed test with an nTelos phone and in the same exact spot as soon as that finished started on on my Sprint. I didn't screenshot right away so I couldn't show the little graph under the download and upload but it gets a nice burst of speed and then goes down within a second. What I was looking for was the ping times, this reminds me of Cricket and how they run traffic through a proxy.

I'm not sure what is really going on but maybe it is not the "network" it's some sort of network management. I'm going to do some other testing with the nTelos phone and see what I can come up with. I will say I have only used 6gb out of my unlimited and my month ends on the 25th so I wouldn't be in the throttled category.

  15. ya same thing last night. Did the ##update and connected to lte but was still having problems with lte getting bad ping times though. Not sure what was going on last night.

Ran a quick speed test to see about the bad pings. You are right these are terrible! The speeds are awful too. I'm over at Stonefield and this is the best test out of three [emoji51]

I haven't had good luck with LTE around town recently anyways. Speeds have been so slow around UVA and the college and my Lake Monticello site near my house is now overloaded most of the day as well. Hoping for some improvements [emoji17]

  17. Hmm, I didn't notice that, but I wasn't particularly looking. I think I had LTE from the West main tower as usual.

I was out at the UVA Research Park on 29 North and can see the tower from my office but today only full 3G. Went back to Stacey Hall in the afternoon and same thing 3G only.

Speaking of that tower on W.Main how does that work for you? I seem to only get Band 26 and most of the time it's unusable

  18. The old market split is about 10 miles south of Harrisonburg. It's the Rockingham / Augusta Co line.

That would make sense then. It was rough around that mark.

I also saw about a month ago that the nTelos corp office now has no signage. Wonder what they will do with it

  19. I'm still hoping that the changes we've had were just the nTelos last gasp, and Shentel will swoop in and upgrade everything lickety-split. #optimistictoafault

I sure hope so, I was hoping it was going to be a huge push over the summer. I have seen some improvements but there is still a lot to be completed. Would love to see Charlottesville turn into a Richmond like market with high speeds and LTE all over. Big Dreams!

I know Shentel has another forum on the site but I was headed up 81 yesterday and am not certain where the old nTelos market ends and Shentel begins but wasn't having good luck holding on to LTE around Harrisonburg.
