Heck, I've been driving/biking/walking around with it running just to expand LTE map boundaries and fill in the gaps! Gets me out and about to see the area more, and kind of fun to see the coverage map fill up with purple!
I remember pushing my son around in his stroller farther and farther from our home just to be able to test the app and how the maps were updating

Any form of timeline on this? Just wondering if its a priority or something that may at some point show up, but also may not.
Sorry, can't make any promises right now. But we definitely want to fix it.

I suggest the state as the first column and sorted by this column.
Will do next time.

Sensorly, why did the "grey" feature go away?
That is, previously if you mapped wimax, it showed purple, and if wimax fell, it would map grey (for mapped, but no wimax). Now, new wimax and new LTE simply show no mapping in areas with no signal.
It's there but doesn't work well with CDMA voice networks. We're trying to get it to work.
If you look at GSM maps, you will see a little.

Hi everyone, here is the list of markets for which we have received data in December.
This includes data up to yesterday. Sorry but I can't seem to layout the table correctly (suggestions welcome !)

Hi everyone,
Sorry about the slow updates today. Sometimes we have to do a little maintenance and this one took longer than planned. When that happens new data received doesn't get added to the maps and when we start processing the backlog of data, the servers get a little overwhelmed and have trouble receiving new data. Once the backlog is processed and queued for redraw, your phones can send easily again.
From what I see at this time :
- the backlog of received data has been processed
- most of the backlog of data has been drawn but zooms 13 & 14 are still late to the party (approximately the middle of the zoom range), I expect they'll be up to date in about 6 hours at most
- phones are able to send the data without running into errors
Zooming in/out is a good tip because we don't update all zoom levels at the same time (or even areas within the zoom level) : there is some optimisation going on behind the scenes. The more you zoom, the more often it gets updated.
Let me know if you see anything missing tomorrow.
Thanks
PS: Thanks to Rick for tipping me about this thread

When we get multiple readings in the same area, we average them. So if lots and lots of readings were made in an area, it may take a little while to increase the average. We're going to improve that in 2013.

Hi,
Indeed, we weren't updating maps for a about a day and then the servers caught back up in the next couple hours. Let us know if you see anything missing.

Exactly. The whole point of my posts was that I would like the addition of a setting that forced "map trip" to start automatically and immediately when the app was launched. This would allow me to make a profile to start the app when my phone was docked and have it constantly tracking without ANY user intervention while I drive across the country.
Ok, I understand.
Did you install the latest version ? That version should always start collecting data when you dock the phone. If not, can you please email us at contact@... so we can work this out ?
-
The RootMetrics app works on both iOS and Android and let's you test signal only or signal+data, so it IS possible.
Yeah and everytime we ask Apple they say we can't.
Go figure.

Just noticed some Grey areas near purple. Not lite purple, and but Grey. What is this? Look near santa Clara ca.
Areas where an LTE phone is reporting not being connected to LTE
-
While it looks like the app surely collects info while it is running, if you switch to any other app or even press Home, it looks like it stops collecting data and is even sometimes killed. This prevents me from playing music or using navigation and still mapping while I drive automatically.
That's what "Map trip" is for : start the app, go to map trip, press start.
Then when you exit the app, it keeps running. You're notified by the icon in the status bar.

Yes, that's from the bug. It's being redrawn right now. Some of the zoom levels are already fixed.

Yes, that's new : grey = no 4G available.
Where did you see some ? (There was a bug for a few minutes after we deployed so most of it must have disappeared)

Are you willing to share the source code for the iOS app? Those of us who are developers can certainly compile and install the app; I'm sure some power users would do the same.
You might also try submitting the app, getting the rejection, then apply to the Appeals Board. They overturn rejections regularly... I think you could make the case that a crowd-sourced coverage map is a good thing and access to the data is necessary. Rest of the app had better be polished as s**t though.
No we can't share the source at the moment. We'll move forward on this around the end of the year. We might even just put it on Cydia.

No idea if this is the right place, but...
On Sensory, every time I use the "report" function, it comes back with "Error occured"[sic], even if I'm connected to a fast internet connection and connected to GPS fine. EVO 4G LTE on CNA (based on CM10)
We've been notified of this bug. We are working on it, it looks like it's just he error handling that's not up to par. Hopefully fixed in the next release. Thanks

I did notice that if I start the app but don't press start right away when I eventually do press start it shows all the points since I started the app. Good to know those points are being shared to the server even tho I didn't press start.
Any clue as to why my 3g points hardly update even though 4g in those exact points do update regularly.
When the phone is connected to 4G, we only add the 4G data points to the map because the phone doesn't tell us exactly the radio G technology (1x, EVDO 0, EVDO A, EVDO

Hello Mr Sensorly, A few comments for you. I think about every heavy user of S4GRU really likes your App. I think you will find some real Techies on S4GRU and at least a few who think they are techies. We are the type people you need for Sensorly. I have been using Sensorly for awhile and thought I understood how to use it. But now, after following a few conversations here, I am beginning to question some things. Could you give us sort of a mini user manual or some instructions. I was under the impression that we had to use "MAP TRIP" to have the app collect and report data to you. I thought we had to hit the "start button". If we want to collect and send data for long periods and make sure it continues uninterrupted while we do other things with the phone, what should we be doing when we start the app?? I had thought that the app might not collect and report unless the start button was depressed. If we do NOT need to be using "MAP TRIP", why do you sort of have it highlighted and why is it there?? I looked at your FAQ on your web site? Some good info there, but not really any instructions on how to use the APP. The app is not difficult to use, but eventually a techie starts digging into it and has questions.
When the app starts, it collects data. When you exit the app it stops
When you press "Start", it will continue collecting data after you exit the app (that's why it adds an icon in the status bar.
(of course, it collects data ONLY if you opt-in & allow it)

If I am understanding this correctly.... it's impressive that you were able to gather the signal strength previously without really knowing it. Now you're able to go back and reprocess the data? Very cool if I'm understanding this correctly.
We knew we were gathering it but it improved as time went by and new phones were released, it's been a couple months. Now that we've checked the data and implemented the server handling we can release them.

Can you PLEASE give us the option to start mapping as soon as the App starts? just a checkbox in the settings would work.
That way I can make it automatically map in the background EVERY TIME i put my phone in my car dock. I drive all over the US and could map a lot of data and I think others would use this feature as well.
It does map when the app is running so if you don't exit the screen you're fine. If you do, I understand the need.
However, the current version should start mapping as soon as you dock and stop when you undock. Doesn't it ?

Glad I'm not the only one noticing the new colors. It's really hard to spot things in the Bay Area now (what used to previously be darker purple and a good signal.) I hope this is temporary, or even reverted. The colors become way darker once I zoom in enough, which is also inconsistent. I'm glad they renamed one of the "4G"s to "WiMAX", but I'd also like the remaining "4G" to say "LTE" or "4G LTE", for clarity's sake. Am I the only one who thinks so? Though it would probably have to be changed for all carriers, for consistency's sake, if Sensorly decided to do so.
The new colors should now be available on the Sprint map (it has finished redrawing). You may encounter a couple patches of the very faint color, that's because some phones didn't report signal strength and we haven't yet decided how to handle that.
As for the naming, that's what we planned to do but in the site's current form, it's harder than we thought. We have to make some changes to the site and we have lots of stuff to do first.

When you do a speed test without turning on mapping, does it map it anyway? I think would catch a lot of new ause I think some people use it to speedtest but not map. Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Tapatalk 2
Yes it does : when the app is running, if the user opted-in to collecting data and there is a GPS signal good enough, it will map.

How are you determining signal strength?
We are using undocumented APIs, similar to what we did for Wimax info.
If you go to the details screen, you will see the info we get. It depends on the phones.

Thanks Lee, appreciate it !
The latest Android version makes it possible to share snapshots of the picture easily, so you now you can brag too : it's the top right icon on the map screen.
