  1. This could be looked at as a signal that the early LTE phones are on the way or Sprint is trying to clear out its WiMax inventory.

Sprint will begin offering select upgrade eligible customers a $50 or $75 instant discount to entice them to pick up a new phone and sign a new two-year contract. The offer, which is apparently set to run from March 23rd through April 27th, will not be able to be used toward the purchase of an iDEN device or an iPhone.

  2. Now that it's official, maybe some of LS2's ex-customers will head to Clearwire.

the company said in a press release. “However, due to these unresolved issues, and subject to the provisions of the agreement, Sprint has elected to exercise its right to terminate the agreement announced last summer. We remain open to considering future spectrum hosting agreements with LightSquared, should they resolve these interference issues, as well as other interested spectrum holders.”

  3. Adios Lightsquared. Looks like Sprint/Lightsquared experiment is officially over.

Sprint is going to cancel its 15-year LTE 4G wireless network contract with LightSquared, according to the Wall Street Journal. Citing people familiar with Sprint's plans, the nation's third-largest network operator will walk away from the deal on Friday and return approximately $65 million in payments it had received from LightSquared. Sprint partnered with LightSquared last year in hopes of sharing the costs to deploy LTE 4G mobile broadband networks. Sprint's contract with LightSquared was contingent upon LightSquared gaining FCC approval to operate its network in the L-band satellite spectrum. The FCC revoked LightSquared's provisional waiver and decided that the GPS-related interference risks are too great. Sprint will now forage ahead with long-time 4G partner WiMax in creating its LTE network.
