  1. I am getting the feeling that you live on the edge of a cell site. You post about having 1 bar and switching between 1x and roaming and such a lot. I don't know if 800Mhz will be deployed in the VI but you will only have a slight improvement in performance and coverage if you are so far away from the tower.

That is unless at one point you had full bars before that.

Well my experience in my home in Puerto Rico before we got LTE, the signal would be all crazy it would vary from 1 bar to full bars in a couple of seconds leaving the phone in the same spot. It would also go to 1x and back to 3g then back to 1x and it would keep doing that the whole day. Also voice calls would often drop and data was just crap. I was like that for almost 2 months. Then one day I wake up, check my phone and ta-daa there was the 4g icon. Now I get solid 4 bars and good 4g speeds in my house.

hmm i thought of it the opposite way like the island is so small we have no excuse..but! my bro has att and when he was is smithbay he lost 4g and went to 3g..so i guess it may still have dead spots?

Even though the island is small the terrain isn't exactly flat so there will be issues no matter what. Thats why places like around the antilles school area will always have issues with sprint because there is no line of site to any other tower on the island. On the other hand if I go offshore fishing 10 or 15 miles to the north of St. thomas I am still getting a great signal because there is nothing between me and the towers.

Cell phone signal travels much farther than we think, I was actually on a flight 38,000 feet in the air and I was barely getting 1x. I couldnt do anything but it would go from -140 to -120 meaning it was getting a hint of signal.

Every single person in my family and 80% of my friends that lives in the VI uses att and they constantly remind me that the grass isn't greener on the their side every time I get frustrated and think about switching to them. They have just as many complaints as sprint customers do.

but i mean their update process..like how was theirs successful and sprint is still struggling?
Correct me if im wrong but I think At&t already had the backhaul in place because they used HSPA+. I know it is extremely frustrating guys but you will get LTE soon, because it is a fact they are working on it and even the press knows. They probably dont want bad publicity so they will get it done as fast as possible. Many states and major cities still havent started NV. Just hold on guys you wont regret it. post-4308-13724536484502_thumb.jpg

Tmobile's phones work with At&t if you switch the sim cards, and you will never get anything better than HSPA+, so there goes LTE.

Sprint doesnt use Sim cards. Just getting out there.

Well the gs4 and the htc one on sprint both have removable sims, if you remove the sim though you won't be able to get lte. I haven't sim unlocked my phone through sprint as yet but a few people over on xda have been able to get it done contacting their international department. Some have also said that they have gotten their sprint One to work on tmobile sans lte of course.

Sprint is CDMA, and Tmobile & At&t are GSM. I really dont think the HTC One or the S4 support it. Its just like the iphone which has a sim card for LTE use. If there was any other carrier using the same 1900 LTE frequency as Sprint then you could probably unlock the phone put their sim in and have a LTE only phone. Unless you flash it to the other company. But no other companys support the same frequencys so I highly doubt it.

  5. im not talkin about that kinda merging..they just said your phone would work off of att..and tmobile bought out suncom..and we had a company here that ran off of that...centennial..so it could be tru..i know what im talkin about..they were sim based also....so it seems as tho how ever centennial was hooked up..its still there..i saw people in other forums say tmobile work here with no roaming..the phone says tmobile..so i dunno

  6. How far can you reliably move large amounts of data with microwave?

Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 2

Line of sights, so basically, it can go farther away but because the earth is round the microwave signal cant go through the earth or around it. This makes it very doable and most likely what they used in PR and the VI, and it has capacity for various gbps. In my opinion it is the best way to go. A lot faster deployment and way cheaper than running fiber lines from PR to the VI, through the bottom of the ocean. Microwave is affected by climate but I do not think it will cause that many problems. This technology has come a really long way making it pretty reliable.

  7.

I believe that to be correct currently and in the near future (also doesn't make much sense to switch away from MW once built out as most of the costs are upfront with low ongoing costs)...

Per Sprint regarding NV in general: "From the base station we'll have packet-base Backhaul using highly scalable, Ethernet and IP network leveraging both microwave and fiber optic technologies."

Here in the VI fiber is simply not available yet, especially not to the towers...

Per ljtmax's comment on this blog post (http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/entry-92-puerto-ricovirgin-islands-is-scheduled-to-be-in-the-second-round-of-sprint-network-visionlte-deployment-in-2012or-is-it-sooner/) also in agreement:

I know that towers feed other towers backhaul through microwave link on the island itself, I mean you can look at the towers and see that for yourself but I simply just don't see how backhaul has been or will be received through microwave link from Puerto Rico. Hopefully Robert can chime in clarify a few things.

Well, the Islands arent that far apart, so the backhaul is in PR, and it could be like a chain. The microwave backhaul goes from PR to Vieques then Culebra, then to St. Thomas which is actually very close then to the rest of the Virigin Islands. That would be my guess. If it is this way, I think it might be a bit unreliable tough if any of those sites goes down that means the rest that are getting backhaul from it will go down also. Hopefully, they are hurricane proof!

  8. Hey guys guess what!?!

LTE is going on tomorrow worldwide! Yes, every Sprint customer will have Unlimited LTE coverage in China, India and even Europe! The dad of my friends girlfriend cousin told me, but I don't want to get him in trouble so I wont say his name. This confidential info from the top! Lol

If you know what I mean, lol.

i dont think that might work...cuz i always have info! :D

Since the beginning of the thread, I have never seen any info posted on your behalf. And if you did have information why not post it?

  10. PR hasn't had "way better" broadband speeds for years...Maybe certain less populated parts of the island in the south/west had marginally better speeds, but the general metro area had been stuck with similar 500Kbps-5Mbps broadband options for a long time...

It started to turn within the last year or so, but Claro's fiber option is still only available in a few select areas. Thankfully the cable internet bandwith caps are gone (tho I would've happily settled for a cap that wasn't as unfair as 40GB) and they're offering up to 20MBps.

I think PR has actually gone thru a lot of the same backhaul issues, and not just for wireless. Hang in there, it'll get better eventually!

Ever since Liberty bought Onelink, I have seen a great boost in competition in the island. Claro only used to offer up to 4mbps a couple of years back and it was very expensive. Now they go up to 50mbps. This started when Liberty started offering their 30mbps speeds, and once they bought Onelink, it greatly improved their offers. We used to pay about $140 for cable, 4 mbps internet with 40gb cap, and a phone landline with Onelink. Since Libery took over, the cap is gone, they increased my internet speed to 6mbps, then they automatically up'd it to 10mbps, HD boxes in various rooms etc... all for the same price. Gotta love competition :)

  11. Did they enable LTE on that cell site that's atop a building next to a Domino's and a Total on the carretera #2? The one that's near Caparra Club... Seems like they did, I think that's the closest cell site to my house in Tintillo and I'm now getting LTE inside the house (whereas before I only got LTE while standing outside).

Guess I'll find out when I drive out later, so far there's been no LTE so far around that general area (drive towards Bayamon or towards San Patricio and it picks back up tho).

I always ran a quick speedtest when I went to the gas station in front of the first bank to see if it was online but always got 4mb from another tower farther away. Yesterday I went to the gas station and I was getting 30mb+ consistently. So I am 100% sure that tower has been LTE enabled.

  12. More capacity, theoretically higher speeds.

That would be great for some areas, but it is not what is best for the island. If it is anything like wimax, I dont expect to get very much signal more than half a mile away, that is without includung the topography and concrete walls.

I see that spectrum being good in el choliseo, las justas, las fiestas de la calle san sebastian etc... the capacity in those places would be amazing. Most of the times I go to one of those parties phones are almost unusable.

  13. Just got an HTC One for my sister to replace her OG Evo 4g. Its amazing, especially the speakers. HTC sense has come a long way, Its smooth. The camera is great, the ultra pixels work better in low light. But in normal lighting conditions I found the iphone 5's camera is just the same.

I'm due for an upgrade this month but I'll probably hold off until sprint releases the Note III or a significant phone with 800mhz support. For now, I'll hang on to my GS3/IP5

Related to our market I'm desperately waiting for the UPRB site to go live.

Why would you want a phone with 800mhz support if its not going to go live in PR?

Starting this year in UPRB so hopefully it goes live by the time I go there.

  14.

I think the same. Love to see the 800mhz in action. They also need more coverage, this is a small island and they can cover all easy. They are loosing some customer that will be more than happy to change from Claro and AT&T to Sprint.

I think it is very well covered, it is just in need of a lower frequency. It would be too costly for sprint to cover the inside of the island and other places where the signal cant reach. If they could deploy in 800mhz, im absolutely sure all those little deadzones around the island would be covered. Concrete here just absolutely kills the signal!

  15. Guys. Sprint is better than ever. No more drop calls for me from UPR to Toa Baja and vice versa. Very good LTE speed. UPR Río Piedras Campus have LTE everywhere and usable 3g if LTE isnt available. I'm very happy with the change. Is feel like a new cell phone company, faster and reliable. To be better, they can include some Internet tethering for free. At least 500mb and people like me will be more than happy.

Great customer service, very reasonable plans, unlimited data, subsidized phones, great phones, good LTE coverage, roaming, unlimited calls to cell and unlimited text messaging and mms, discount for a lot of people (government employees 15%, Sears 25%, Burger King 25% etc.). For me guys, is the best cell company in Puerto Rico. Before NV very bad. With LTE and new sites is the best. They still need to improve coverage in the island and their business here will be very profitable.

I agree 100%! The only thing that can make them better is if they were to use the lower frequencies for better building penetration. I feel like it is almost a must here, because of the terrain and the concrete buildings everywhere. Once they do that here in PR, it will be amazing. Not sure if it is possible tough :/

  16. Just passed by the UPR Bayamon site, and there was work being performed, including a worker that had climbed up to the tower. LTE may light up soon...

  17. Well yesterday my closest tower got updated to eHRPD. I had 4G before but I still was having dropped calls, delays in sending/recieving text messages etc.

I have to say with three bars a week ago a call was impossible, today I got a long distance phone call from my dad and had 1 bar the whole time and the call was crystal clear! Text messages now send pretty much instantly and 0 dropped calls. The speeds are now reaching 2mbps on 3g and it is working great in low signal conditions! Getting 4g was great but now that the kinks have been resolved it is perfect!

  18. nah, we're gonna be the first 100% market 'cause it's a tiny market with less than 250 sites

but yeah, extremely lucky to be so ahead in the rollout

It is a small market with a high population density and a lot of competition. I think those are big factors as to why we have LTE from most cell phone carriers.

  19. Wow I feel so blessed to be in the first market to be completed. You guys have no idea how lucky we are, there are a lot of markets and we get to be the first one to be 100% complete! I think it is because there is a lot more competition here than any other market. I remember PR was one of the first markets where AT&T launched with LTE, and Tmobile also launched 42mbps HSPA+ here. Now we also have Sprint LTE, Claro LTE and Open Mobile LTE. That is a lot of competition for a small island. A lot of places in the US still do not have LTE, let alone Sprints LTE. We are truly blessed to live here. Proud to be Puerto Rican :D

This is also going to be great for tourists that come to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands since they will always be connected with blazing fast UNLIMITED speeds wherever they are on vacation. :D
