  1. I don't think T-Mobile can shut down GSM, at least in rural markets, because of their use of GMO LTE and its limited range. Shutting down GSM would result in loss of coverage area in rural zones.

I think they'll definitely start refarming GSM in urban cores though.

Obviously they can only shutdown gsm on full build sites and not GMO lte sites.

They may shutoff gsm on the full build sites to get capacity (even before they upgrade rural sites to full build).

The biggest obstacle is the m2m customers. TMO probably has to tell them a min of a year in advance (unless they've already told their m2m customers)

  2. Problem is spectrum is not easy to come by, and they will have to refarm some of that fallback.

As Sprint's LTE coverage improves, so has there 3G performance.

If you look at recent TMO earnings present and compare with 4q2014, they've greatly increased number of target Wideband markets which means AWS Hspa is shutting down.

Att 2g shutdown is dec 2016 and hopefully TMO's is not far behind.

    Indy only has

    10fdd AWS lte

    5fdd pcs Hspa

    5fdd pcs gsm

    So not much fallback there.

  3. France: before Free Mobile, they had the highest prices in Europe

Barclays analysts warned that the French market remains "extremely vulnerable" as mobile prices have gone from among the highest in Europe to among the lowest.

    highest mobile prices in europe.

In Austria, prices increased when 4 to 3 happened

Three Austria's acquisition of local rival Orange in August 2013 has helped drive up consumer prices significantly for mobile services in the country, as indicated by latest figures from the Arbeiterkammer Wien (AK)--the Vienna Chamber of Labour.

  4. No news to us but . . .

While Enteneuer made it appear that Sprint is quite comfortable working with the spectrum they already have, Claure was quick to point out that he believes there are major opportunities available in the low-band spectrum auction.

“As it relates to the 600 MHz spectrum option, we all know it’s an opportunity – once-in-life opportunity to acquire low-banded spectrum and a critical input for cost-effective deployment of wide area coverage.”Claure said in a recent earnings call. “So to us, it’s important to understand what are the auction rules going to be to make sure that smaller carriers like us have a fair opportunity to acquire this competitive input.”

  5. AT&T is pretty much saturated everywhere, and if you think you will see some relief anytime soon you will be disappointed. The problem is they took their eyes offthe wireless division, and decided to focus on Directv, Mexico acquisitions, and the whole LTE on cars.

Att maybe will get some relief once they launch 2.3ghz which will be band 30.Still that will be just a 10x10.

Their aws3 J block was "just" 10x10. Add that to 10x10 wcs and they should see much relief.

  6. What is the non-HD Voice like on VZW? I've heard from some reports its bad, but it has been several years since I last used Verizon back in the early 2000s.

I definitely agree with you that T-Mobile needs to refarm their PCS for LTE around here. I thought the 15x15 would help, but when I had a pm conversation with someone here on S4GRU about it, the relief difference in that from what I was experiencing wouldn't be that much.

Once Sprint gets the carrier aggregation going strong on 2.5 here in Chicago, that kind of issue I was experiencing on T-Mobile won't even be a bit of possibility on Sprint. If T-Mobile hopes to compete with Sprint around here at that point, not only will they need 15x15 and the PCS LTE, but they ought to consider buying the 700mhz spectrum from the AT&T/Cricket-Leap deal.

    TMO on pcs has

    5x5 gsm

    10x10 Hspa

For those of you in deep urban Chicago and dense suburban, id be curious to see a few speedtests on Hspa before and after the AWS Hspa is shutdown on 7/5/2015

Depending on the load on Hspa, TMO may shrink pcs Hspa to 5x5 BEFORE they shut down gsm.

  7. No, they have not. Much of their networks they did not "build," and those networks are not "nationwide."

Or if it is your standard that they do have "nationwide" networks, then so do Sprint and T-Mobile.

    AJ

Someone built it. I don't care if vzw then acquired it

308mil out of ?320? is pretty good for a profit-seeking entity.

For the sake of the extra 12mil you want nationalize the networks?

Why not do a CAF-type thing to at least give people wireless broadband?

Like 5 posts above, I specifically acknowledged duo as superior to !duo AND that for me TMO meets my needs except maybe when I travel to the Atlantic.

If people need coverage everywhere then duo is there for them.

  8. In geographic area, Germany is about the size of one US state. So, it is not all that apt of a comparison. I built a wireless network across my property, but that does not make me the equal of Sprint, for example. Size/degree is everything.

No other country has done what the US has done, can do, and should do across such an immense geographic area. Capitalism needs to take a back seat to the greater good. That is my point.

    AJ

If you're still talking about wireless… vzw and att have already built nationwide networks.

Tmus is now $9.57 bil higher than sprint which is highest it's ever been

  10. Yeah our city has a similar Wifi project that is/has been completed for about 10 years.  I have heard people mention that it is costly to maintain and may be looking to switch to a cellular based solution soon.  I would think if 4G speed and low were the priority in town then Sprint would be the leader.  On the other hand the powers that be tend to think their coverage on their farm in BFE outside the city is more important.  Thus AT&T or Bluegrass Cellular would get it.

There's already cellular coverage and if att or BG cell want to deploy small cells, they can and independently of any muni wifi.

  11. FirstNet will operate, to my knowledge, on LTE Band 14. Do any consumer devices support that band? The answer to that is the answer to your question.

    - Trip

Zero. Too bad we can't do band 28 like the rest of the world.

  12. It's a laudable goal, but unless the federal government builds it and then hands it over, it will be rife with delays, cost overruns and corruption. Will it ever be inoperable? Maybe, but doubtful.

    It'll definitely be INoperable lol.

  13. I want to see Dish developing their own network using Artemis Networks technologies. That would be truly disruptive. Or Comcast and in general cable using Artemis Networks and EBS spectrum for video and VOLTE.

If Artemis is truly the cats meow, we'll see carriers not dish get first dibs.

Dish and its unsupported aws2, aws4 and no customers won't be a high priority for Artemis.

  14.  it seems like a good opportunity for Sprint to get paid to deploy dense B41.

    Seems like a win-win to me. :-D

If by win-win you mean "TMO lawyers, VZW lawyers and ATT lawyers will get paid to challenge this in court" then yes it's win-win-win.

If public money is spent then the public - not just sprint customers - should be able to access it.

Wasn't softb supposed to be giving Sprint money to deploy b41?
