  1. Or, do they now need it because they are adding more customers?

    Using Nexus 6 on Tapatalk

Of course they need it long term but they don't need to pay an arm and a leg TODAY.

Off the top of your head, do you know when the buildout deadlines are and the procedures?

  2. Getting rid of unlimited, or even increasing the price, needs to be done tactfully

I think a good "drive the point home"-presentation should show the following:

    1) total $ paid by non-unlimited people vs unlimited

    2) total data used by non-unlimited vs unlimited

maybe (1) is not skewed, because of the $50/$60 unl plans, but (2) is definitely skewed towards unlimited

    3) the cumulative distribution graph of data usage % for unlimited users

Using TMO's 97% prioritization rule as a guide, the top 3% use an insane % of the total amount of data used by unl customers.

If TMO or Sprint were to say "look: 97% of all users use less than X GB while in the top 3%, the median person uses Y>X GB", I think rational people would definitely accept X GB as the 'unlimited' ceiling.

  3. lol wow he really said that? I updated my last post but what he fails to see is when John took over it was free for all with data use and and abuse it. But as their network started to greatly improve he started making changes with the throttling or whatever you want to call it and then the 2 year unlimited data guarantee.

But that goes for all these cellular companies. As things improve your models change to maintain a good quality network. Prime example look at Verizon and AT&T good networks that don't offer unlimited and yet people will still pay for their services because of the quality. I just fear the day when John pulls unlimited. People will have a fit and call him a bunch of liars and every name in the book.

I used 20GB last month but only 5.5GB counted by TMO because they don't count speedtests and music streaming.

Of that 5.5GB, a big chunk is HBO GO, Netflix; I really thought I was a bigger hog than that.

As a TMO user, I wouldn't mind TMO drastically increase $ of unl IF they increased the base allotment.

Those people who use 100GB - considering music and speedtests aren't counted - definitely should pay more.

Technically he never said he would get rid of unl. What he said, at last uncarrier event, is the #uncontract: for NON unlimited plans, prices will never go up while for unlimited he said "that's a different animal" and gave a 2-year price price guarantee.

  5. I agree but a lot of T-Mobile fans think John is their friend.

And they're the cult of Legere that AJ references. I had an exchange on twitter with a cult member who insists that legere is a true consumer advocate and would never raise prices as CEO of combined TMO sprint co. Why? Bevsuse he met him and 'he seems to be a good guy'

  6. If sprint pulls the unlimited plan it will be a huge bait and switch on their part. They promoted unlimited when the network sucked and it would be a miracle if you could use more than 5Gb a month given the network performance. Still a lot of us stuck with them because of the unlimited data and promise of a better network in the future . If the get rid of it after finally making their network usable, it seems unfair to people like myself who stuck by then through all of the 'pardon our dust' phases.

This mindset is erroneous: neither sprint nor any other company is loyal to you. They never said "til death we will provide unlimited". Marcelo's loyalty is to the shareholders and theirs to their money which they've invested.

    Marcelo/Legere/mcadams/randall is not your buddy.

  7. Belief is stronger than fact -- that is how religion has persisted in the age of reason.

Many people still think that Sprint "sucks." Meanwhile, T-Mobile was in the gutter but has somehow managed to turn around its public perception so that Magenta is now "nifty shit." Fact or not, that is belief.

    It's called advertising.

  8. The words "KIA" or "Hyundai" were poison at one point, now they are a force to be reckoned with..

As Sprint continues to improve, consumers will forget..

I didn't say they wouldn't. But by then the iron may be cold. TMO will have dealt with their rural problem and duo won't just allow massive defections without fighting. Att may even finally shelve its dividend/stock repurchase to deal with capacity issues.

Plus with Altice's entry into US, buying suddenlink and soon rest of top 10 cable cos, it may buy TMO. Its French wired unit, numericable, bought SFR wireless to enter a 4-carrier market.

  9. The comments on these articles are so funny. On CNET's Google+ post about this the comments were all:

    1) Sprint sux...

    2) No they won't...

    3) I switched 2 years ago to T-Mobile and...

P.S. Someone was actually talking about how Sprint sucks and they switched two years ago. How does 2 years ago relate to now again?

Because most people don't read s4gru.

They switched to TMO and as long as TMO is good enough, they're not gonna switch back. Sprint is in a huge hole (negative brand equity)

  10. No. Absolutely, it is good news. Pay for what you use.

People selfishly, irrationally want "unlimited" data, cheap prices, copious LTE bandwidth, and dense networks -- all at the same time. That is the not so good news...

    AJ

Carriers chose to start out with unlimited.

Good luck to sprint trying to take away unlimited. Will be very fun to watch sprint vs TMO play musical chairs with unlimited.

  11. At this point all the low hanging fruits are acquired. The remaining ones are legit users or squatters that are extremely emboldened by the aws auction and is demanding extortionate fees.

Tmobile may want 700mhz desperately but they will not pay hundreds of millions to every single squatter.

Good thing the 700a buildout deadline is 1q2017 (I think).

I hope TMO waits it out to stick it to the speculators. They got millions of adds with no lowband anywhere; they'll be fine with ONLY 190mil lowband plus small cells.

  12. I am sure Tmobile has been eyeing to snatch up the Chicago 700 MHz A-block from Leap (AT&T) but I am sure AT&T has been asking for a huge premium for that market. There is only so much AWS spectrum swapping that Tmobile can do with the other major carriers. I think at this point Tmobile needs to accumulate more spectrum, hence 700 MHz A-block market additions and 600 MHz auction.

There's still small cells, gsm shutdown/refarming.

  13. Not surprising then about Sprint's network improvement plan adding 9000 (or around that) additional towers to the network, bringing it up to around T-Mobile's site numbers. Although, would Sprint need even more than that, in order to properly operate 2.5 without massive coverage holes?

There doesn't have to be contiguous 2.5 coverage for sprint to have a good experience.

Enough traffic has to be offloaded onto 2.5 for 1900 lte to have enough capacity to be decent experience.

  14. Anyone know how many cell sites each carrier has? I'm curious about these numbers.

    Sent from my M8

    TMO at least 60k

Currently, Carter said, T-Mobile has fiber backhaul connections to 50,000 of its sites, out of 60,000 total sites. That decreases costs and allows for more data usage on the network, he said.

  15. I know, but what I meant was theoreticallly, what would such a network be like?

The reason I ask, is I'm developing a theory on how these networks would operate better with a more streamlined spectrum holding, rather than the mish mash of spectrum nowadays belonging to these carriers. It sounds as Mexico may have this right, unlike the US.

Mexico is a 2.5 world country whose infrastructure sucks.

We have two companies covering almost everyone with lte and another two soon to cover most people.

It's a wholesale network. It can only sell to wireless companies.
