1.

So today I found out tower near my work place was active.

While at work my phone is connected to wi-fi, so as I was walking outside I turned off wi-fi and phone connected to 4G briefly and then went to 3G, it stayed on 3G until I did the airplane toogle then connected to 4G.

I decided to do a little experimenting.

I went back into our office, turned on wi-fi and connected to our network.

I then proceeded to walk out of the building, leaving wi-fi turned on.I continued walking until I lost the wi-fi signal and the phone immediately connected to 4G and it remained connected to 4G until I was back in range of wi-fi.

As I was leaving work I decided to do some Sensorly mapping.Part of route took me out of 4G range and I was back on 3G.

I figured I would wait until I was close to the tower then do the airplane toggle, as I got closer to tower the phone actually connected to 4G on its own and remained connected for about 2 miles before I lost signal.

Anybody have any thoughts on this situation.

Ok...since I am not really a techie...and I don't yet own an LTE device, this thread probably none of my business...but, just a thought...

Could the situation be that the LTE works better switching from WiFi because Sprint is trying to get users to use WiFi (off load) whenever possible, so the phone is set to encourage users to use WiFi indoor, and then gets a better LTE signal outdoors.

    Just a thought

  2. Here's my 2 cents on the debate. I always use residential WiFi wherever I can (provided I have the ability to access it. I feel that by using the residential WiFi, the response time would be better and there is a noticeable increase in battery life when using WiFi. Now where I work, (which is at a hotel), we have WiFi for our guests, which any one can use. Our WiFi infrastrcture is so shoddy, that our speeds vary wildly during certain times of day. (I think our problem is that our hotel uses AT&amp;T DSL). Our WiFi speeds range from 0.5mbps to a max of 4mbps download. The huge part of problem is that latency can be high (even during the max speeds). Whereas with 3G where I work, I get about 3 of 6 bars, however I get a far more consistent user experience especially when it comes to video streaming. I hope it doesn't make me a bad person, because I do try to use WiFi as much as possible when at work until it craps out. I should also point out that I do try to use public WiFi whenever I'm out and about on certain conditions. Those condtions are: a) ability to access WiFi without having to pay for it, &lt;img src='http://s4gru.com/public/style_emoticons/&lt;#EMO_DIR#&gt;/cool.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<img src='http://s4gru.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />' /&gt; the speeds are good enough for what I need, and c) if I feel that the WiFi is safe. For the record, where I live, I don't have 4G Wimax or LTE (I hope San Diego gets LTE, vecause I was bummed we didn't get WiMax), but even if I had WiMax or LTE, I will use the WiFi to help Sprint maintain their unlimited offerings and be courteous to fellow Sprint customers.<br /><br /><br />PS&gt; I do have Sprint Conections turned off, because I don't want my phone connecting to any unauthorized WiFi networks, but do make the effort to toggle on &amp; off the Wifi feature on my phone where I know I can get WiFi.<br /><br />Sent from my GT-P5113 using Tapatalk 2

  3. Ok...so I have read almost every post on this thread and have learned some technical knowledge, and a lot about human nature.

So just to add my two cents...

I, myself use WiFi at home on both my Android smartphone and my Blackberry. My primary reason is the the WiFi is faster than my Sprint service where I live. I only get a crappy amount of 3G speed where I live. I am, however, conscious of my Mobile Data usage too.

As for speeds, I have to agree with the posts that question why someone would need blazing data speed when only doing e-mail or something like this forum. I mean, why does someone need a really fast speed to do something text based?

As for WiFi at work, I don't use it. It is not because I am trying to use or abuse the Sprint network. The WiFi an the company I work for, tends to block personal e-mail (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc), so it is not really useful. Also the work WiFi is password protected, so if I did want to connect to it, I would have to give my phone to the IT Specialist to load it, and its not something I would prefer to do.

Ok...so what is my point? My point is that I agree with others here that say, use WiFi, when it works for your purposes. I mean, if you are doing activities that do not require fast data speeds (like e-mail), or if you are downloading an app, then use WiFi.

I do not believe, however, WiFi usage should be forced by your device. Because, like at the office I work at, it does not work for your usage, you should not be forced to connect to it.
