  1. This is good news although I'm still confused as to why portland oregon has not been announced yet as well as seattle.

I'm not complaining just not really understanding the method to the rollout

I posted this in the sponsor section, so I will repost in the regular site to hopefully make more sense of the rollout order.

Sprint is not doing the work, Sprint's contractors Samsung, Ericsson and ALU are not even doing the work. Local contractors from all over the country are doing the work. That is the reasoning for the "shotgun approach" with sites popping up all over, and it is one reason that the outlying areas seem to get upgraded before the bigger cities.

My theory is that in big cities, the contractors that work on cell sites have thousands of sites in their area to work on. This includes all the major carriers and all sorts of other items that are within their realm. They have a lot going on, but they also are larger companies with more employees. Then in the outlying and rural areas, the local contractors are smaller and have less "business" in their area. If they have nothing else to do, they have the equipment and the site is ready... rock and roll! Let's get that work done boys!

That is just an educated guess as to why we end up seeing some areas, that have us scratching our head, before others. There is also backhaul availability issues, permitting etc that can hinder work progression in some areas.

  2. Nope, I'm stock (though I considered rooting during the frustrating wait for word about the JB update) but held off long enough that I got the official update that I'm fairly satisfied with (except for the stupid Google Navigation crashing bug). If I take it to the store, I can only hope that if there is something wrong with it at this point that it can be replaced even without the insurance plan, as there's been no way to test my LTE coverage until recently, and I got the phone at launch (to replace my OG Evo).

I would think that lack of LTE connectivity would be a warranty replacement.

  3. Yes, that's one the first things I checked. Even toggled it and let it sit a bit at cdma only before switching it back to lte/cdma to see if that would make a difference. Still got nothing :(. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Also, are you rooted/unlocked/running a ROM? That could be messing with your ability to pick up LTE. I'm guessing no, since you said you accepted the JB update, but worth an ask anyway...

  4. Thanks for the information. Yeah, I tried the Airplane mode after seeing it suggested here before, also tried rebooting my phone, and even updating the PRL (not sure if that would have any effect or not to tell the truth), but its kind of sad to hear the Evo LTE seems so poor at LTE, especially since its right there in its way-to-long-and-cumbersome name .

But thank you for the suggestions! :tu:

Sounds like something is wrong with your phone. I would take it in to a store. They might give you some line about how LTE is not launched in the market and you might be seeing areas where it was testing and inadvertantly picked up and mapped.... But hopefully they have some way to actually test it.

  5. Hi!

I'm hoping someone can tell me if perhaps my Evo LTE isn't getting a LTE even though Sensorly shows it active for my area. I'm in the NE (Forest Lake/Hugo area) and I saw the reports here in early Dec that 4G was showing up, and sure enough I saw the blips to prove it. I decided to do a drive around the area, but it only ever seemed to show 3G as active (at least based on the icon, or going into the settings and looking for the 4g settings information under Mobile data), even when I'm in the "strong LTE" areas shown on Sensorly's map. I've been checking fairly regularly, both before and after I did the Jelly Bean update on my phone.

Can anyone confirm if they still get a 4G signal in this area, or if its blocked as an earlier messages on this topic said might be happening in some areas? Just want to see if I have a broken phone or not.

    Thanks!

Next time you are in an area that sensorly is showing coverage, toggle airplane mode on and then back off. That will reset your radio and it will look for LTE.

Otherwise, hopefully someone can tell you a place to go look or you can stand next to someone with a LTE connection and see if yours works. From all reports on this site, the EVO LTE is not good at picking up LTE in a market that has islands of LTE that are few and far between. Some have said that once the market deployment is more mature, it starts picking up LTE easier and quicker.

Dang supert0nes, you beat me to it...

  6. And it also makes sense going in from Havasu and Kingman you can simultaneously move up into Vegas.. And south to Phoenix. But that shouldn't get in the way of a chance to give our fellow communities a little jealous ribbing lol

Go to about the 1:00 mark, the start of the second verse... Then prepare for facepalm

  7. I remember taking all my graduation money and buying a CTX from best buy. That thing should have been named POS. The good thing about it was that I bought the warranty and after a few fixes, they gave me my purchase price back on a gift card. At that point, I bought an IBM. That thing was great. Couple that with my T1 line in the dorm room... Napster was big at the time... Life was good

Downloading a game and streaming 2 different videos

    All on Clearwire WiMAX?

either they dont throttle their employees or that area isn't congested or had like some nice killer backhaul stuff.

I believe it. You could do that on 3G if it was at least 1.5 Mbps download

  9. GPS wouldn't lock in 90% of the time unless I rebooted my phone.

When I finally got ICS which was supposed to fix GPS, it didn't.

Battery life went from bearable to horrid after ICS.

My phone would randomly get smoking hot when charging.

I got a menu key glitch about 2 months ago that made the phone almost unusable.

Random restarts that I didn't force.

Just a myriad of problems, that's off the top of my head.

I finally, after 4 visits to a repair store, got them to replace the handset and I'm going to hand it down to my wife to replace her Evo 4G.

It is a never ending cycle... I'm hoping to see some really good improvements in the second round of LTE phones by Sprint.

That sucks. I was running ROMs on mine the whole time, but the wife was bone stock and had 1 LOS occurance, but it was fixed within a week of that happening with an OTA and she never had another problem.

You might have had a lemon.

  10. . The small panels look like they get plugged in to the bigger ones. But you're saying the smaller ones run down to the base station? The pictures look like the small ones connect to the new LT E that's why I thought it was new equipment.

Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

Yes, the smaller legacy panels have a coax cable running to the cabinet. The new NV panels have RRUs that receive the signal and process it right there to reduce signal loss.

  11. Yep, went HTC for a bit with the Mogul, TP, and TP2. Finally jumped to the Epic. Epic4g garbage pushed me to the EVO LTE. Couldn't take the EVO and jumped to the Note2. Love it so far.

It seems like so long ago, but I swore off Samsung after their flip phones were FULL of bugs in the software. Then the wife wanted the GS2 when it came out because she liked her Samsung smartphones (even though they were some of the worst phones Sprint ever released) the Instinct and the Moment. After playing with the GS2, I had to trade in my 3VO for it. I've had nothing but Samsung since...

  12. Amazon had it for a penny, so I couldn't pass it up. The GS3 was $120. I figured with another upgrade coming in 10 months it wouldn't be too bad.

Samsung lost my GS3 purchase by SUCKING so bad with my GS2. That thing has been garbage, the list of hardware and software problems I had is too long to start listing.

Interesting, I thought my GS2 was the cat's meow. Both the wife and me had a hard time giving them up when we switched phones. It was head and shoulders better than the Evo 3D I had before it.

  13. Pryroscott,

We had wimax through Clear wireless in Hawaii for sometime before sprint launched it as their

    4g platform.

    Also,why do you speak of

    Banning people just because

    we/I are inquiring about LTE?

Where in this thread am I coming across to you as complaining?

I for one think people who quote other's post and make a comment

That is not even about or contribute to the thread at hand

    Should be banned?

    Agreed?

Clearwire launched their first WiMax market in January 2009. Not quite what I would consider "years" before Sprint unveiled the EVO, but a while, indeed.

Inquiring is fine, but complaining is another thing. I read every post on this site and I remember the members who are continually skirting the line between complaining and "asking questions."

Yes, I was stating an opinion. I know there are a lot of members in 3G only areas that would LOVE to have WiMax right now. (looking at you, Detroit, Phoenix, every rural area in US)

  14.

Right, Oahu (Honolulu market) is usually the first island to begin upgrades, etc, but Summer 2010 to finally bring in Wimax just to Honolulu after its been on the mainland years before it is way behind. Plus by then, Wimax was already starting to wind down. Like I said before, I won't be surprised if it takes a year or more to finally get things started.

WiMax was on the mainland "years" before 2010? Am I missing something?

Also, in my opinion, anyone in a wimax area should be instabanned for complaining that they don't have LTE yet...

  15.

Yes but on the transmit side, you would have to have panels deployed somewhere, with sufficient backhaul. I can see them making a more rural play, where customers are restricted to satellite internet. Perhaps over microwave backhaul?

true, but if you have the spectrum and more access to backhaul in the metro... You might as well offer it. It might draw more customers looking for a package deal. Especially the dish TV customers getting soaked on internet.
  16.

The problem with the Lightsquared model is that there is no ecosystem in place to deploy it. Would they deploy it as set-top boxes to offer home internet?

If you consider tower spacing, they would have to rely on Clearwire to deploy the spectrum for them, or in the LS model, Sprint to deploy it. What happens to those areas where PCS barely has coverage, AWS-4 will be the same, if not slightly worse.

And LTE requires a higher signal strength, so the broadcast area shrinks even more. If they had a higher power receiver that could mount on a dish, it could extend the range a bit though.

  17.

    Robert,

When you say working on 3G first?

    Do you mean upgrading the

    Backhaul to fiber from T1?

And what do you mean by 3G acceptance?

    Why I state this?

    If you check

    on the network updates per

    Sprint's network site. There

Has been almost 70 upgrades in the

Last 6 months according to Sprint.

Majority of the upgrades were of the the data speeds and capacity nature.

I know that NV and the (data speed/capacity) updates per Sprint's

Site are not the same entirely.

    What will the Nv upgrades

    Show up like on Sprint's

    Network updates site?

    Also,

    So after this 3G acceptance

    Is so to say granted?

What will be the next step?

    Thanks.

    Is this a poem?

  18.

No, my understanding is that there is not enough frequency separation to ever use Lower 700 MHz D/E blocks as supplemental downlink with Lower 700 MHz A/B/C blocks. If ever used, D/E block supplemental downlink will have to be paired with Cellular, PCS, AWS, WCS, etc.

    AJ

So if sprint ends up adding additional pcs LTE carriers, they can't use carrier aggregation with two PCS carriers?

  19. Nahh... nothing to be scared of. Good neighborhood. If you saw the guy you'd see why. When I worked for UPS you knew exactly who the lazy ones were by just looking at them ;) (and no I'm not partial to UPS at all...otherwise I would still work there)

It is Louisiana after all. Not exactly known for their work ethic...
