  1. I went to the NC state fair today in Raleigh and had 4G most of the time -- I did one speed test and got around 5/1 -- which I think is amazing seeing as that place was packed.

I was in a building at one point and saw that I was on Cricket roaming... (this week I handset amed" or been on a partner with:  Alltel (in parts of NC), nTelos (in parts of WV and KY); US Cellular (in MO),cricket (in NC) and Verizon (various states)... according to Signalcheck Pro... and that is just what I noticed!!

I went to the state fair twice and picked up 4G maybe once, briefly and it was like one bar. I had to force roam most of the time I was there just so I could use my phone. It seems like Cary/Raleigh hasn't had any work done in a while. There's like two 4G towers in cary and it's been like that for months. I work close to downtown and get close to full 3G but it's near useless cause it's so slow. My last speed test was .14 mb. And I barely even get service at my gym. Getting real fed up with Sprint...

  2. I picked up LTE at crossroads today. It was a weak signal, - 115 db, but I still got 4.5mb down. This was in the dicks parking lot specifically. I occasionally work right off Cary parkway and kildaire, and my phone likes to switch between 3g and 4g all day. I don't think the new back haul is hooked up but it's still a lot faster than 3g. But it's constantly switching, every 5 minutes or so. I've yet to pick it up off Jones franklin and 440 but I haven't been by there in a few days so I'll check next time.

  3. What phone do you have? I only pulled 7mbps down on old apex. Also I drive by los tres magueyes on my way to work. Haven't connected there yet. Anyone know if the galaxy nexus for sprint lacks in 4g picking up ability? haha

An Optimus G, consistent 20+ mbps download, 7-8 mbps upload.

Also, I tested NV 3G in apex off Salem St and hunter street in apex, got 1800 kbps down which is the fastest I've ever seen on Sprint 3G.

  4. Jelly Bean has been released, or at least leaked, in Korea. Devs have it but there's not much they can do until LG releases source which should be soon. Last I heard the OTA was supposed to be Dec/Jan.

    LMAO!!!!!!!!

This post got me cracking up. So you won't consider htc again but you go and buy an lg? They are by far the worse when it comes to software support for their phones. I do agree that htc releases to many flagship devices though and that their lack of effective marketing is whats really doing them in. As far as lower end devices, samsung has just as many as htc does so that point is invalid.

Which is why I bought the phone off contract... This is LG's first real flagship competitor and I wanted to try it out. Maybe this is where LG turns around. If not, I'll get rid of it and try something else. I'll agree with you about low end phone nes for Samsung and HTC. But it's the flagships that carry your brand image and that's where HTC is failing miserably. The One X is actually a really great phone but they didn't go about it as they should have.

But I'm just sick of HTC, I've been with them too long. I had the Evo 4G and the 3D. Sense used to be a huge plus, now it's a con. It's old and stale. And they still can't seem to figure out that on a 4.3" screen and above, the top of the phone is not the right place to put the power button. It's a pain in the ass. LG and Samsung have some sense to them and put it on the side. Also I wanted to stay with Sprint and the Evo LTE is the tackiest looking phone I've ever seen so that was out of the question. LG has really impressed me with the Optimus G and HTC just doesn't do that for me anymore.

  6. I'm not going to consider HTC again until they consolidate their devices. They keep spitting out phones every two months or so. You have the One X, then a few months later the One X+, then a month or two later the Droid DNA, and in January/Feb they'll have something else. And then there's all the lower end One variants that I can't even keep track of. With so many phones its no wonder they suck at updating software. I think Samsung has the best strategy here. Bring all you've got to the table with one flagship, advertise the hell out of it, and focus on keeping the software up to date without having to worry about ten different variants of it. Then a year later, bring out a new one.

I have the Optimus G now and I'm curious to see how LG handles updates. I'm skeptical which is why I bought it off contract so if they decide to abandon it then I can jump to another phone without paying out the ass.

  7. lol. Not sure how they got their data but I'm never buying an HTC device again because of their update schedule. They drag their feet for months releasing source code and waiting for ICS on my 3D was ridiculous. The thunderbolt is supposed to receive ICS and it still hasn't got it. That phone is what, over two years old?

  8. The optimus g and mach use LTE signal for their bars and db levels unlike most of the other phones.

Really? Robert told me that it uses 1X signal to display bars just like all the other phones.

  9. The screen quality was amazing as well as the signal numbers in the FCC docs. But I didn't want to be LGs guinea pig for their first real phone here. The locked bootloader was also a big turn off for me.

Maybe next round for me if this phone "rights" the LG ship in the US. Sounds like it will though.

The bootloader has been unlocked on both Sprint and ATT versions, other variants will come soon. As of this morning my Optimus G is rooted, unlocked, running CWM, and it couldn't have been easier. Took me a few key strokes and 10 minutes of my time.

Debloated stock roms and AOSP roms are in the works. With this device sharing internals with the Nexus 4, I see great potential for the G since roms will be easily ported. There are already screen shots of it running CM10.

Have you had any issues picking up LTE? With my EVO I usually have to toggle airplane. I don't have a good feel for how long it takes for the phone to switch over once you are in range of LTE

I wouldn't be able to give you a good answer yet. I drove out to the one LTE tower in my area the other day and it didn't immediately switch over. I've had my phone on CDMA only since I've had it and I switched to LTE/CDMA but only for a few seconds before I toggled airplane mode and then it connected.

  11. If this is the tower near I-540 and Six Forks, I drove by there today too. Had to flip airplane mode to get it to show up. Then turned on Sensorly and let it map until I lost 4G. Looks like you or someone had already done it, because when I looked at the maps it was a wider area than I drove with it on.

I ran a speedtest as well with Sensorly but don't remember the results. Is there a way to see speed test history? Can't seem to find it in the app. Time to reinstall the speedtest.net app.

Yep, that was the tower. You can see your speed test history by hitting the results tab.

  12. Looks like LTE finally hit Raleigh and since I was in the vicinity of the tower I decided to drive down and do some speed tests. I'm certainly impressed. But I was so excited about the 4G that I forgot to even do any 3G tests lol. Oh well I'll find out later.

But I'm very excited, I hope the roll out ramps up here soon. Mainly Cary so I can have LTE at work. One odd thing I did notice though was a few times it would show I had no bars like while I was driving away but I was still pulling 15 mbps. I'm assuming this is some minor software bug on LG's side? (Using an Optimus G)

I picked up one at a Tmo store earlier today. Thanks for the offer.

They tried to get me to activate at the store. I explained I was doing the web only $30 per month plan with 5GB of data. They said there was no prepaid plan like that. I had to show them online. They were blown away. They were mad that they are not allowed to sell it. They said with a deal like that they cannot compete in store.

It blows my mind how little store employees know. Not just T-Mobile, but all the carriers. When I was at ATT a few weeks ago, I asked the guy if they happened to have a demo unit of the Optimus G and he had no idea when it was even going to launch. I told him Nov 2nd because it was like publicized knowledge. And I'm always having to explain things about phone/network specifics because they just don't know.

  14. Well, I've had mine since Friday. Absolutely love it. It's super fast, great looking, very solid build quality, and I actually really like LG's UI. I have replaced the stock launcher with Apex cause that's just what I do on all my devices lol. I had to run out and get a case from Sprint on Sunday though, this thing is very slippery and I feel like I would have dropped it sooner or later. I got the Otterbox Commuter, which for now at least is pretty much your only option for a decent case, and as usual with Otterbox's it's got great fitment and protection. Doesn't make it too much bigger (the phone is very thin to begin with) and it's a little easier to hold now.

But to anyone that's been on the fence about buying it, go for it. It's a really awesome phone. Some devs over on XDA already have CWM recovery booting up. No unlocked bootloader yet but I know it's coming, they are making great progress.

  15. For those who have been noisily clamoring for a quad core smartphone, the performance gains are underwhelming and at the expense of battery life. Watch what you ask for -- you just might get it.

The Nexus 4 has done very poorly on benchmarks for some reason. The Optimus G which has the same internals has dominated everything. The S4 Pro in the G typically scores 7500 in quadrant, making it much faster than the exynos 5. Battery life doesn't seem to take a hit either, as most sites say they are getting a days use out of it which is average.
