  1. Anyone purchase any accesories in anticipation of the device yet? Cases.. type c to type a .. etc etc?

I ordered a one meter USB 3.1 A-plug to C-plug cable from one of the Chinese sellers on eBay. Less than $3 total, shipped slow-boat from China.

  2. They still included Sprint's bands and network compatability, although last year version had them but wasn't able to activate with Sprint. (Wireless Republic version).

Which variant of the previous X are you referring to because according to Moto's website, neither of the two CDMA variants supported B26 or B41 (and as such Sprint obviously wouldn't have been interested in whitelisting them).

  3. They just added 26 lol

    They actually changed several of the international bands too. This morning it said: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 20, 25, 28, 40, 41

    Now it says 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 38, 41

Talk about a cluster-you know what

  4. The pure phone is already confirmed to be unlocked and working with all carriers (said in the announcement)

Yeah, but like AJ noted, for FCC approval they actually sent TWO variants. One with CDMA and Verizon/Sprint support and one without. Very confusing indeed since they specs they list on Moto's site do indeed match up with the "GSM" model, and yet they claim that it is "pure" and one variant should work with all carriers. Go figure.

  5. Not so fast.  Motorola or Phandroid may end up with egg on its face over this one.  Bar none, the "UC2" variant is not authorized for band 13 nor CDMA2000.  Unless it gets a Class II Permissive Change filing or the "UC1" variant also ends up as a Pure Edition, both parties are at least partly wrong.  The only accurate part is that there is a Moto X Style that is compatible with VZW -- it just may not be the Pure Edition.

And, just to be clear, Moto X Style is what the 2015 version is being called, right?

    AJ

Yes, my understanding is that Style = Pure. Apparently Motorola has no plans currently to sell the Play model in the US.

  6. The band 41 support is important to some international operators, so there is that explanation.  But I suppose when Motorola knew at some point that the Pure Edition was going to include band 29 supplemental downlink for AT&T and never going to land on Sprint, it was not worth any added expense to include band 26 and test CDMA2000.

    AJ

True, however, the Nexus 6 does have support for bands 29 and 26 so at least there is precedent for a recent Motorola handset which supports both.

  7. ... It is a curious omission, since it includes band 5 and covers all other Sprint LTE bands.  Additionally, it supports 2x CA -- just not on band 41.

    ...

    AJ

Yeah, that is a darn shame because once a device already supports B5, then from a technical perspective, adding support for B26 is a relatively minor effort (compared to adding say B41 to a US device which might otherwise doesn't support super-high bands and/or LTE TDD). Not sure what was Motorola's thinking on this one, especially given they put B41 support in the device.

  8. We will have to find out the model number and check that device against the FCC docs. Maybe be a mistaken omission. It's also missing VZW B13.

I think right now they are only listing specs for the "pure" edition (FCC ID IHDT56UC2). As they get closer to release they'll probably also list the other variant (FCC ID IHDT56UC1) too. That one has band 26.

  9. I find it a little odd that with the poor sales of the Nexus 6 which were mostly due to its enormous size, Motorola would take a risk on another giant device.

I like the overall specs of the devices but both are a pass for me. I only get ones I can use single handedly, which means no larger than 5.2" (which BTW was the size of last year's X).

  10. Would that mean they would have to go through the process of another 3GPP band standardization? Or is there already a band assigned to the original SMR spectrum?

Yes, there is already... band 27. However, unlike band 26, it doesn't encompass the cellular band (band 5).

Band 27 devices without specific support for band 26 should be able to use band 26 if Sprint deployed MFBI.

  11. According to this article, it meets or beats most (minus the Unlimited plans from Sprint and T-Mobile).

Nice workup but I feel like they should have also included the two carrier-owned/captive MVNOs (MetroPCS and Cricket [auto-pay prices]). Compared to these Project FI isn't all that from a price prespective.

  12. Is it possible to get a Note 4 unlocked from Sprint? I purchased a brand new Note 4 online with clean ESN and about to activate it on my account.

The Note 4 was released before the "magic" February date so it cannot be unlocked for domestic use. Note also that if you are still under contract then I don't think they will let you domestic unlock any device you put on your account, even if you paid for it in full/got it on eBay/etc.

  13. I am hoping LG releases a highly-spec'ed non-phablet device to compete with the M9 and S6. I find that devices larger than say 5.2" are too large for single handed use and therefore I personally (and I suspect many others) won't consider purchasing them.

  14. Tell yourself that the G4 will be announced soon and likely come out in May. Just hold out until you see what that device has in store before committing to the S6 for 2 yrs.

    Sent from my M8

I was looking forward to the G4 myself before making a decision. However, the latest rumors indicate a screen size of 5.6" - too big for single handed operation in my opinion and therefore not a device I would personally consider. Heck, at that size, I wouldn't even consider it a competitor to the M9 or S6, rather to the iPhone 6+, Note 4 or other phablets.

  15. Oh ok gotcha! If in the case that I get this phone and I'm not "wow" by it which I should be. After I pay it off and have it unlocked by sprint, shouldn't this phone work on like t-mobile or whoever?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The Sprint variant is supposed to support all of T-Mobile's LTE bands and all of AT&T's current LTE bands (once MFBI is fully deployed on their network, it's already available in many places). However, the Sprint variant doesn't support AT&T's upcoming band 29 LTE (though I don't think AT&T has released any phones yet which support this band) and probably doesn't support VoLTE either (at least not in the initial firmware).

So, on the face of it, this is a good unit to operate on AT&T or TMO if unlocked. That said, I don't think Sprint has clarified yet if they will domestic unlock devices that are paid in full but while the associated subscriber is still under contract or making payments or a lease for another device. Might be an issue for some people and Sprint is still not clear on this.

  16. Don't waste your time with Apple; they can't unlock your phone. All unlock requests have to be initiated by the carrier. If it's inactive, and you're a Sprint customer, your line can not have any installment billing or contract tied to it at all. Even if you paid full price for the iPhone, it does not matter. Your entire line needs to be clear of contracts and installments before they'll even take your request seriously.

Hmmm... what if he gives his phone to someone who isn't a Sprint customer?

  17. Storage space on phones is the biggest ripoff. The cost to samsung or apple to give us 64GB instead of 32 is minimal, yet they won't do it.

Yeah, the markup on the additional memory is far more than the overall markup for the device as a whole which is why not providing expandable storage is a major disadvantage for a given device.

Consider that most flagships usually sell at about 2.5x unit production cost. However, the markup on the extra $100 for substituting a 64GB instead of a 32GB module probably results in a markup of 6x or more for the manufacturer for the extra memory. It's kind of like options on a car, where the car maker makes a whole lot more profit percentage-wise on the $1,700 "navigation package" than they do on the base price of the car.

  18. The PCS F block is not contiguous with the PCS G block. The PCS C block, more specifically, the PCS C5 disaggregation is adjacent to the PCS G block.

    AJ

OK, thanks for the correction though regardless, the concept still stands... because of the legacy 5Mhz BW device limitation you couldn't use an adjacent frequency to deploy a 10Mhz (or wider) block including the G block without supplying some other 5Mhz block in B25.
