  1. Title pretty much says it all. I'm seeing this pop up on tech sites, so I guess it's news. Not really much of a surprise right?

    http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/sprint-shutter-wimax-network-end-2015-will-turn-least-6000-clearwire-sites/2014-04-07#ixzz2yDrvb6bw

Anybody know how many wimax devices are still out there?  I know I have one that's still on an active line.

My guess between 6-8 million including the 1 million direct customers based on numbers from the last Clearwire quarterly report and reduced by churn.

  2. So your still not happy with 11Mbps? I am happy I don't see 3G!

I am happy when I don't see 3G AND have I have usable speeds. So anything higher as 500KB is ok, 1MB is good and everything higher is better. Verizon yesterday provided 89MB down on my Moto X in Bakersfield while driving on the Hwy-58 near Costco.

  3. I have to agree with you...I have Disneyland season passes and have seen a huge difference this year compared to last year! I remember last year trying to use the park app and couldn't even get it to download

LOL, I still used the good old Nextel at the Park in January on a "framily" trip because the Nextel Direct Connection (without need of a Network) had very good range within the park. I was actually at the Disneyland Hotel while the kids roamed the parks and I was able to communicate with them without an issue.

  4. Since they are able to get Cox home, they can just get the Cox business service.  It is still cheaper than getting T1's.

Again I can't get Cox and my neighbor got just booted off Cox for using actually 215 MB on average. He was the last house with Cox service and if I want their service, I need to run a line which cost $$$$. DSL is also not really working because I am too far from the last pop. Wireless is currently the only option and again I am hopeful that Sprint will do a Fixed wireless solution together with Dish.

  5. I know that there was a Nextel Data Center in Irvine, CA that provided the data for Northern Mexico. Not sure if that is still working but that was one of the reasons why there was always a little difference in Nextel Mexico withing Baja

  6. Does anyone know how to update ones profile or PRL while on CyanogenMod on a GS3? My coworker is having an issue with his phone, that I fixed by updating my own profile (stock HTC one). I haven't found this info anywhere.

I had the same issues with my Epic 4G (now on FreedomPOP) while running CM10.3. You need to see if there is a temporaery boot / rom available. I can only speak from experience with the Epic4G but I am able to activate the 2nd rom in recovery and than update my profile and PRL without any issues. As soon I reboot I am back in the CM rom. I guess there is a solution for your phone like it too.

  7. Since you are in rural Nevada, do you have line of sight to your neighbor's house?  If so, you should be able to cobble together a solution.  We could even help you.

    AJ

They no longer have Internet because Cox disconnected their service for high use.

The problem with Towerstream, as with most internet solutions, is that they don't serve more rural areas and the areas that they do server would already have many other internet options available:

New York, Boston, Seattle, Dallas, Las Vegas, Chicago, Miami, Reno, Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Providence, Philadelphia.

And with a promotion of 8Mbps service for "only" $799/mo, that doesn't seem like an option for anything other than businesses that can afford it.  Unless I'm looking at the wrong Towerstream?

    http://www.towerstream.com/ServiceAreas.aspx

They have different pricing but yes the service is not cheap. Given the amounts of data, it is just a price of doing business and yes it's about 10 times the amount Clearwire gets from me each month

Sure.  It will better than WiMax in many instances too.  Just wanted to give you an idea what you may experience.

    Robert

I never had a speed issue with Clear and I am blessed with good enough speeds. Still hoping on a fixed solution from Sprint.

Holy cow! 10k? Sheesh Iwould get Towerstream over that any day ! I didnt realize it cost 10k for a half mile of Cable and such. Gues theyd have to get permits, and such too

They don't want to cover just one. If I had an appartment complex on my land, the connection would be free

  8. I have a friend who used Towerstream as a backup for his office in Dallas. He liked it, but said they had a lot of variability in performance. But even their worst was still more than adequate. But the range he experienced was between 3-30Mbps, if memory serves. So highly variable.

Robert via Samsung Note 8.0 using Tapatalk Pro

    Still better as local dial-up

  9. Usually you can contact the cable provider and see if the can run lines to your house. You may pay for them to run the cable, but itd be a good service after. Hopefully by neighbor you dont mean one thats like a mile away

I called Cox and they have no plans to cover my house because I am just past their territory. I would pay $10k to get my house into their territory just to have the continued pleasure to pay them each month. My neighbor is about 1/2 mile away and that is not too bad

  10. UVURSE is even lower limit.   Streaming hd shows kills data.

Correct, but technology has evolved and usage of the Internet has grown. I can't even do HD streaming but I am fine with SD. What kills me is the amount of data that I need to send due to work. Got a nice offer from Towerstream and when Clear goes into the sunset, I will switch to them.

  11. thats alot of data kinda low limit but still its there for data hoggers. Most business plans have no data limit on them.

You don't even know what you use at home. My neighbors are a standard family, five people: Kids run YouTube and music, Parents have their Roku and Netflix/Hulu. They don't use torrent etc. Still they use a lot of capacity every month and it's getting the norm. I wish I had access to Cox but they stopped at my neighbors house.

Most home ISP are looking to maximuze their profits and tax usage.

I am sure many people hear would be shocked if they could see their usage,

  12. If this does fly I wonder what kind of distance from tower we are talking and will this fly through trees.

Look at Towerstream and they already provide fixed wireless service and the best part, still unlimited!

Yes I can hear the haters, but guess what, the carries seem to have no problem with usage if you're willing to pay. Our neighbor just got kicked out by Cox for using more than 300GB per month but hey he could sign up for a business plan, pay more and their network will be A-Okay with it.

  13. I hope so. Because after all, you quoted someone named "bandwidth hog" who was complaining about poor network conditions... Might've found a part of the problem.

I doubt that I am the cause for Sprint's bad coverage or their 1x network which is covered up as 3G.

There's no cure for bandwidth hogs. They'll continue to hog forever.

Yes, B41 with unlimited data :-)

  14. 3 prepaid brands. Frankly they should just consolidate all of them into the Virgin brand since it seems to be the most popular.

I always get a crack out of it when people rate their network experience on Virgin's "network" much higher as people do on Sprint. Hopefully never tells them it's the same CDMA/LTE (WiMax) network.

  15. There has been a noticeable improvement in the area N/NE of SJC (e.g., Orchard Parkway).

As for the south part of San Jose, does anyone else feel as if Sprint has forgotten us?  5 LTE updates in the last map update, and zero in the south part of San Jose (and zero in all the ones I can remember for the past several months).  I hope one day I leave home and find that a big cluster of LTE sites has been turned on.  Would they launch the South Bay market with such a large area still not updated?  Areas such as Hamilton Ave near Bascom (with a Sprint corporate store!) with near zero data speeds most of the time...

    Marc

I find LTE quite useless in South San Kose and I am glad to carry an additional WiMax phone with me.

  16. I would not even worry about the fact that Sprint and TMo have different networks because both are running LTE and that it the path both will go. There was no joint path for Sprint & Nextel. In addition, many questomers would be able to roam on both networks as many Sprint CDMA phones have GSM radios included and provisioning the chip to look for a CDMA or GSM network could be done right away without much hassle. In the long run you move customers to a single platform (let it be CDMA/LTE) and keep a core within large cities for roaming customers from overseas available.

  17. I noticed last week that FreedomPOP is now charging $9.99 to activate any BYOD phone. I have not checked if this price applied only to the Free Monthly service plan but it's a new charge.

Still not a bad deal and their messenger app update makes the phone service usuable in 3G areas.

  18. Boost and Virgin throttling is probably one of the best things that could happen for Sprint customers, IMO.  Stopping the fraudulent users and network abusers is of utmost importance.  Long live (legitimate) Sprint Unlimited Data!

Why do you consider these subscribers to be fraudulent? They decided for a product which was offered legally and these subscribers generate revenue for Sprint too.

I like this.  Maybe now after all the kids on Boost and Virgin come into town for school my Sprint proper phone will actually be able to do something. (Still on legacy backhaul here)

I doubt this will have a large impact on contract subscribers. Sprint needs to get the network fully operational and provide peope with an experience within their coverage area that is not only equal but better as currently offered by AT&T or Verizon.

If Verizon launched a market, you could be sure that your service worked, with Sprint you don't get to experience this and people do pay attentention when the phone bounces on or off LTE all the time.

  19. I like the move because it brings back value to a contract. You want speed, make a commitment and if you want to pay less you get less.

I remember the time when Boost offered $50 all inclusive while contract customers paid $100 for the same plus a little bit of roaming.

T-Mobile throttles their customers much more and I am sure if Sprint gets their network right, people will not mind. In addition while I am a heavy user most people use less in mobile data.

  20. They are currently installing LTE on b26.  You're looking at the wrong map. The maps in the Premier section shows sites with accepted LTE on b26.

I have to look at it when I get to that level.

To be honest, I couldn't tell you that. You need Robert, AJ, or one of the other senior members who know way more than I do. In my head it seems like b26 runs into issues of needing to be calibrated better to not interfere among towers(due to the massive propagation increase over b25), otherwise it could cause dead zones. I think they're just trying to do it right the first time instead of rushing things and causing more headaches.

Considering that Verizon runs their network on 700 MHz which is even lower as Sprint's 800 MHz. okay that probably have a higher tower spacing but still this back and for seems a little redundant. People in Bakersfield are pretty much 3G/800/4G from the start or very shortly after initial 3G/800 deployment,

All towers are b26 ready. All the need is carrier cards. I believe the issue was with obtaining the carrier cards which I don't think is an issue anymore.

That was my thought and I would love to know if there is a priority. I was told that Las Vegas may even launch as a Spark market on day one.

Also one thing I forgot is The LTE b25 downtilt might be higher than evdo and 1x. And could be a huge cause. Yes b26 will help indoor connections but it may not switch you over until b25 is has an unusable connection/signal strength. B26 is not meant for everyone to be parked on so they can get better indoor signal strength.

My buddy is a mile away from tower A and there is a 2nd tower about 2 miles away. I noticed myself that I started a call on 1900 Mhz while driving and was handed over to 800 MHz during the call and stayed on 800 for a while.

Which phone do you have. Depending on the phone bars do not represent LTE signal strength, but represents 1x signal strength.

This should not be an issue with the LG G2 or any other Tri-Band
