  1. I really hope this post was meant as a joke...

I alerted a few family members that were Nextel to Sprint converts, hopefully the issue is already resolved.  As digi noted, it's probably just an overlooked switching/routing issue.

And clearly none of the other carriers ever have issues.  <_<

Get over it people. It happens. It could happen to your landline too and no matter how important it is to your business it could happen on any carrier at any time and there will always be a call that is more important somewhere else.

  2. So this is an issue I've had for many years. I live on the Michigan/Indiana border and frequently travel back and forth between the two states. Northern Indiana is a former iPCS market and my part of West Michigan is a legacy corporate market. When I go back and forth my phone does not hand off to the sites in Indiana and vice versa unless I drive so far out of range that it is forced to. And then it drops the call/data connection.

A few years back I spoke with an iPCS engineer at HoFo who made some tweaks and it worked better for a while, but over the last year or two it's been just as bad as it was before. It's a little better going from Michigan to Indiana than it is from Indiana to Michigan.

Just an annoyance and was curious if anyone had any insight?

  3. I don't think this is the slam dunk for DISH that they are making it out to be. The total purchase price may be higher, but it should be noted that two other important metrics will also be considered by the board/shareholders (info from WSJ)...

Debt: SoftBank $21.3 bil vs. DISH $45 bil

EBITDA: SoftBank $18 bil vs. DISH $9.4 bil (this is a big one, it indicates that the SoftBank deal offers a more efficient operation which turns in to better long-term returns for shareholders)

Cash on hand: SoftBank $14.8 bio vs DISH $8 bil

  4. Quick update : all of the backlog of data is processed and drawn at least at some zoom levels. Except for 25% of the CDMA data which is 4.5 days late at most.

Just out curiosity about how long does it normally take to draw new data on the map? For example I mapped quite a bit of new LTE this morning around 1:30 AM Eastern and it's not on the map yet. I'm not complaining I'm just curious...

Correction: If I zoom in it's there, just not at the higher levels.

  5. What Sprint is doing in the rural areas with Network Vision is just unprecedented. Although I still feel Sprint falls short in some regards with rural service, they are the best at how they treat them of the big 4.

Agreed. Until AT&T bought Centennial and Verizon bought Alltel, Sprint (including Nextel) was the only nationwide carrier here.

  6. I wouldn't be surprised if it is. I saw a crew running new fiber to a cell site here in town on Wednesday, the only two carriers on it are Sprint and Verizon (formerly an Alltel site). They wouldn't confirm nor deny that it was for Sprint but said it wasn't for Verizon.

  7. I heard from one of our local Sprint reps, when talking about Network Vision-

now, keep in mind, this is a marketing rep, so this information is likely to have been completely misunderstood, or perhaps even consist solely of complete falsehoods and fabrications-

they said that Sprint's "strategy" is to start outside and move in when it comes to cities, and that Michigan was going to be no exception. That, in fact, many smaller cities that are only supported by one or two sites are much more likely to get 4G LTE early when compared to any one "downtown" site.

Again, this is likely a massive misunderstanding of the real plans. These are also the same people who tried to tell me that Network Vision and 4G LTE are two completely separate, unrelated things; apparently Network Vision is coming later. These are also the people who offhandedly tell me that it's a "mistake" for Sprint to have even tried to put LTE on 1900 because "it doesn't work inside buildings".

So take that with a bucket of salt. A grain won't be enough.

I have no way to verify this, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some truth to this, just look at the Chicago deployment, started in the suburbs (and in some cases even further out) and moved towards the loop.

  8. Which set of pictures? :-p

In the first set, all microwave backhaul would be for the Fixed Wireless Broadband providers on the tower.

In the second set, yes, there are two backhauls. Here is an album of the microwave backhaul licenses Sprint has in the Chicago metro area: https://plus.google....581425345592769

Just out of curiosity, is there anywhere to get this information (about microwave licenses) for other markets?

  9. It's hard to say as I'm not familiar with that particular area, but it sounds like the tower you are connecting to has yet to be upgraded. The LTE and 3G upgrades will occur at all of the existing sites, but a market is officially launched when a sufficient number of sites in any given area are upgraded. Once a market it is launched it may take several weeks (or perhaps months depending on the size and geography of the area) to be 100% completed.

If you become a site sponsor you can access the maps of complete sites and maps of all of the sites to help narrow down your particular location.

  10. It's possible the site near your location has not been completed, not all of the sites in any given area are completed at the same time. If you're not picking up eHRPD I would generally think this is the case. The maps depict outdoor coverage (in excellent conditions, flat, tree-less, etc.), so does your device pick up LTE outdoors? Also, some people have found that they need to cycle through Airplane Mode to get their phone to pick up the service.

In the future, you should see signal strength at or near your existing 1X/EVDO levels when the rollout is complete.

  11. I haven't been out much since I've had the phone but had nice signal over by Ireland Rd/Ironwood. At home outside it's been going in and out from 3g to LTE. Anxious to see where I get a signal when I'm out tomorrow.

It's definitely stronger in South Bend vs. Mishawaka or Elkhart/Goshen, but holes are quickly getting filled.

  12. I work in and around commercial airports for a living and have had many discussions with network engineers from Sprint and other carriers. Early on all of the carriers were prohibited by the FAA from broadcasting their signals over the runways at airports with instrument landing systems. This was due to a fear of interference. Therefore all of the infrastructure around airports was designed with this in mind and as stated above many terminals have DAS's installed that may take time to be upgraded as well (not to mention all of the other issues mentioned). This is obviously highly dependent on the configuration of the airport and the infrastructure of the carrier.

For the record, in the international terminal at Chicago O'Hare airport about two weeks ago I had no issues with connecting to LTE.

  13. I don't understand why their Minnesota PCS spectrum wasn't added to this deal.

One thing I noticed is that most of the areas purchased outside of the Chicago market were former iPCS markets where in many areas there isn't even any EVDO yet not to mention significant coverage holes.

Any correlation? Obviously the Chicago spectrum is good on its own.

  14. I've not had one that was outsourced in in many years. Granted, I don't call that often. In fact the last 3 or 4 times I've called over the past year or so (for activations and one service issue that was network based an PROMPTLY resolved) they've all been state side. When they answer they say this is so and so at the call center in Any Town, USA.

  15. My mom's photon q had an odd "registration" error message yesterday. It was stuck in 1xrtt. After a reboot it was fine, but I've never seen the error before. She is unlocked and rooted, i didn't check software version.

Mine has done that quite a bit, but it only happens in areas with eHRPD. I first noticed it in Chicago back in September, but now that we have eHRPD enabled here it is doing it randomly as well.
