  1.  Also, going back to LTE from 3G happens automatically now, even if you have active data sessions.

Well this is good to hear. I am thinking of returning to Sprint. according to a sales rep (since they are to always be trusted), supposedly Sprint's phones no longer have that huge 30 minute delay for trying to reconnect to LTE; Effectively negating the need to toggle airplane mode. I know what you said doesn't answer my inquiry and likely does not correlate to it, but seeing that the phones can switch from EVDO to LTE during an active data session, makes me hopeful that the rescan interval has also been improved.

Also I have been out of the loop on Sprint stuff for almost two years. need to learn more about how reliable LTE connectivity has become with improvements and availability of band 41; unfortunately it seems that the South Bay market threads are dead.

  2. Honestly, I'm not sure. I'm not the main account person so I can't get the exact numbers right now; it could be more than that but I'll try to double check. When I'm home this weekend I'll try. Oh, and I think the account has the Wells Fargo discount.

Ah the Wells Fargo discount. When I first activated with Sprint, the store rep added that discount to my account. A hefty 27%. I miss it.

Since Sprint decided to audit all the discounted accounts, I had no choice but to submit my current employer's info for the 18%.

  3. About $230/month for five phones on ED1500.

what is the breakdown for the lines?

I have 4 lines on ED1500 and I pay 220 with taxes and fees

Breakdown: 4 smartphones, 1 has the $11 insurance, I get 18% employer discount.

Since I am paying 220 for 4 lines, i am curious to know how you are getting 5 lines for 230 assuming all lines are smartphones.

  4. Interesting, what would I need to do to sign up?

actually you just need to pick up a prepaid tmobile sim. I've purchased them at Target, BestBuy and even at CVS. the activation is done online. During online activation, you  are shown a variety of plans to go with. Only new activations have the $30, 100Minute/5GB plan option. This is the only time you can pick that plan.

edit: I see the Walmart option bypasses the need to activate online. its all in one step.

  5. I am aware of that. But there is a band 25/26 site less than a mile from my work that is on the outskirts of town and the speeds there are maxing out at about 5Mbps on both bands. Site has been active for over a year. Optimization hasn't happened yet. Today I reactivated my Nexus 5 and saw the signal to be about -109 for both bands.

  6. Well to be fair, the towers I tested were when they just got converted and at non-peak hours. So my guess would probably be 20's-30's in normal times.

So as it turns out, the Sprint coverage map was correct. Gonzales CA has band 41 active. It must have been turned on today because I actually get a bit of LTE in the house. (No LATE yesterday indoors) Sadly for being just turned on, I maxed out at 15 Mbps (speed test taken from about 1000 feet away from the tower.) Inside the house which is half a mile away. I maxed out at about 8. (Basically four iPhone signal dots vs 1 dot)

  7. From the towers I've checked, I've gotten anywhere from low 30's to about 40 on B41, usually with only a -90 to -110 dbm.

I know most probably still need backhaul provided to them.

Only once did i ever see speeds like that. It was before triband devices were very common like now. normally I only see speeds of like 10Mbps while band 25 would be like 5Mbps. Although once I got 30 down on band 26 in Fresno. usually its like 4...at least in Salinas, CA

  8. Spark coverage in this update seems to be extremely optimistic.

I agree with this. it states that in my town of Gonzales, CA that I should be surrounded by Band 41. This is not the case. we just barely got band 25 active less than 6 months ago and even then, I cant get LTE inside my house which is located approximately half a mile away. We dont even have CDMA 800 active yet.....unless the recent completion of moving the panels off a temporary tower back to their original location is an indication of this Spark upgrade.

edit: I wonder when Robert will update his completion maps. This should give us some better insight.

  9. Any idea what are all the supported bands? I am assuming Quad-band GSM, but what about the WCDMA and LTE bands? Does it support Band 10 CDMA?

I need to upgrade my dad's phone. He loved his old DuraXT but realized that a smartphone would be more useful. He's using my old single-band Galaxy S3 that he has come to dislike (he's still new to smartphones). He's fearful that it will break easily and complains of the poor battery life.

Where can we buy one unlocked? I checked the kyocera website and was redirected to bluegrass cellular to purchase. even if Sprint can't whitelist it, I would consider a GSM provider for him just so he can have a rugged smart phone.

  10. Well this is exciting. Just wish it could be put on the app store. I would love to test this app too but I don't like having to jailbreak my phone. its too time consuming to do and from the little bit of research i have done for the iOS 8 version, it seems like Windows machines are still the preferred computers to do this (I am currently on a Mac, the Win7 machine is in storage).

  11. I picked up an iphone about 2 weeks ago. too late to return. Im saddened by this. I would have liked a Nexus 6 but I think I would have avoided it due to the price tag. I have a 32GB Nexus 5, 400 plus tax and shipping was about 450. not bad. but 650 for the Nexus 6 plus tax and shipping, it would have been over 700. Not to mention, any issues with defective devices. I had a bit of trouble warranty exchanging my Nexus 5 after my GPS failed. Lets see what next year or the year after has instore.

  12. We also have to remember that there was a Verizon and Sprint variation of the Galaxy Nexus, which housed the TI OMAP 4460, and that seemed like a mess of things to manage due to the two different versions (CDMA version and GSM/UMTS version). That mess could have also contributed to Verizon and Sprint getting cut from the Nexus 4. I feel like for the Nexus 5, Sprint was lucky that Google and LG decided on the Snapdragon 800 so implementing a CDMA network on it would be much simpler, and I'm guessing Sprint was willing to get a non-Sprint-unique version of the phone in order to just have it on their lineup.

If the Nexus 6 did use the Snapdragon 805, Sprint would probably have to pull some strings to make Google create a CDMA specific handset similar to what happened with the Galaxy Nexus. However, I don't think we Sprint Nexus 5 users are that big of an audience in either group's (Sprint's and Google's) eyes, so I think if we don't get the Nexus 6, it'll probably be due to political reasons more than technical... though, I'm not an expert on what standalone modem chipsets could be used with the Snapdragon 805 to provide a CDMA+LTE based network.

I have owned a variety of phones over the years including WebOS, Android, iOS, Windows Mobile and Windows Phone. For me iOS, Vanilla android and WebOS have provided the best user experience.

With the possibility of the next Nexus phone not being Sprint compatible, I am quite disappointed. I have mostly enjoyed the Android experience. The best being that of Vanilla Android on the Nexus. Sense and Touchwiz haven proven themselves as unstable, likely due to the OEM modifications. IMO vanilla android has been very stable. Because of this (and other factors) I am hesitant to purchase another OEM-modified Android phone.

I know that no phone is perfect, but so far, phones that run an unmodified OS like the Nexus 5 or iPhone have been best at providing a functional/fluid user experience. So for me: if no new nexus on Sprint, then I might once again jump ship to iOS.

  13. Trust me, I tried every trick in the book. The only thing that resolved the issue was setting to 1x only and rebooting. The final solution (flashing the old radio) is the only permanent fix I know of.

I too can say this is the only permanent fix. Flash an old radio. I used the one from android 4.4.1. After a few days of using it, I switched back to the radio for android 4.4.4. No issues anymore but that's because I haven't been swapping between the Sprint and T-Mobile SIMs. I have had my phone set to Global and also to LTE. No problems anymore. I believe it's a bug in the radio firmware that causes the phone to try and connect back to GSM for voice.

  14. I do that all the time.. well.. once a month or so.. I haven't seen one pushed to my phone in a long time.. no other iphone in my home got the update either.. so far.. But I'll take it! :)

    Thanks!

I've seen it happen in the middle of the night with my Nexus 5. It just pops up stating "updating profile"

Makes sense that PRL updates get pushed otherwise lots of phones would have outdated PRLs since the majority of sprint users wouldn't know what that is for.
