  1. Sprint only sells the 32GB version and it's 199.99 on contract.

That's awesome, when I saw only one version online for $199.99 I assumed it was the 16GB version.

Now, I just have to wait for silver...

  2. I'm really curious about the silver version of this phone. The gunmetal grey version is obviously the flagship so that's everywhere, and apparently best buy has exclusivity on the gold (what gives, it's 2014) but all I really care about is the silver. When will that be available?

Also from what I understand only the 16 GB version is available now. Am I wrong about that? If not, when do you guys think the 32 GB version will go on sale?

32 GB silver is the dream

  3. No.. that message has been going out to people all over the country in the past week. Some people are in areas that have a long way to go before NV could be considered "largely complete". It has been mentioned in a few threads.

That being said, we are spoiled around here when you look at the progress in some other areas, except for Chicago and Atlanta.

    -Mike

Oh I see. A coincidence, then. That being said, considering 32,833 out of 39,352 sites have received some upgrades (~83%) perhaps Sprint just sent out a blanket text, considering 5/6 as largely complete.

    Oh, well.

  4. Sorry for the novice question, but when it comes to 800 smr, is it 1x800 or CDMA 800? I've always considered it 1x and only used for voice and text signal (so you could be connected to 1x800 for voice and text and LTE 1900 for data) but I've noticed some people refer to it as CDMA 800 as well. So can it handle data as well?

P.S. is 800 smr 1x advanced? Sorry again for such an axiomatic question.

  5. I'm gonna stop you right there.  I see you did a lot of work, but that first point is simply not true.  The VAST majority of people would never know the difference between 5 mbps and 50 mbps, assuming they have the same ping/latency.  While it may be true people respond to numbers in advertising, in real life usage they will personally not even be able to tell the difference.  Once you reach a certain bandwidth, all the matters for everyday phone use is ping.  While it's nice to have that ability to say "10 times faster than carrier X!" in marketing, it doesn't seem any faster to the consumer.  Hand them 2 phones and they'll think the one with lower pings is faster, even if the bandwidth is lower.

True story, I agree, I was just pointing out my findings. For me, as long as I can stream HD YouTube videos without buffering, I'm happy. But it is what it is.

Didn't mean for that post to get to so long, I basically was crunching the numbers out of curiosity then decided to share.

  6. This whole time, I've been patiently waiting for LTE to finally reach my area. Because that was the goal - that was the end. And, with Sprint's improvements, it's steadily been coming closer. But now, I realize, that LTE comes in a lot of flavors. Sure obviously there are different frequencies, backhauls, etc. that impact performance, but to the regular consumer, it comes down to speed. And Sprint is simply the slowest - so much slower than every other carrier!

Sensorly made this clear to me, it lets you look at a portion of a map and gives information based on speed test done by users of LTE on all four carriers. It comes down to the following chart:

Fraction of speed test results, by carrier, within download speed categories.

    Carrier Chart.PNG

Like.... just... 92% below 15 Mbps Sprint? Really? This isn't surprising though, I've noticed it in my own speed tests. I exported them into Excel (29 LTE tests of the last month) and found:

    • A mean result of 8.7 mbps
    • A median of 7.8 mbps,
    • and the following distribution (histogram):

    LTE Frequency.png

Basically what I'm saying is, on average, Sprint's LTE is overwhelmingly slow compared to other carriers (even peak speeds are substantially lower - I'd say about half as much, and that's being generous).

Now I know what you're gonna say - but Sprint Spark, TDD-LTE, upgraded backhaul are rolling out as we speak, bringing greater speed joy! To what end though - it's not like the other carriers are not improving their LTE networks, too. Then, of course, you might say, Sprint's network is improving faster than other carriers' networks are, so in the long run it will overtake them. And to that I say - really? The order of LTE launches: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile. But while Sprint improves its network in stages (3G, 1900 MHz LTE, backhaul, 800 MHz LTE, 2500 MHz LTE, and on), T-Mobile and AT&T are already there (where Sprint Spark is trying to take us) with peak speeds of over 50 mbps! And you can't argue that AT&T's amazing speeds are because it's newer and therefore less saturated - because it's not. Who knows how much T-Mobile and AT&T will have progressed by the time Sprint Spark finishes rolling out?

On that note I'd like to end this rant/post with the following disclaimer: the data here reflect Sprint speeds in my area (around Boston) - I can't claim to know the nationwide state of Sprint's network, so if you're enjoying consistent 20+ mbps, then congrats and I wonder why it's not happening here, in this first round market. Maybe there is a reason? Who knows...

  7. To your first question..yes all 38,000 sites will eventually get B41 LTE but not sure if robert will get that info.

To your second question..yes the clearwire sites are separate from sprint. There are about 15,000 clearwire sites nationwide so you have to add those to the total site count. Right now clearwire is focusing on upgrading all of its own clearwire sites first with B41 LTE first before beginning to upgrade sprint sites with B41 LTE.

Thanks! This makes sense. One last question: will the 15,000 clearwire sites only broadcast band 41 LTE, or will they also broadcast bands 25 and 26 (and, for that matter, 3G and 1xRTT)?

    Thanks again

  8. The Premier Sponsor section has a map of every single Clearwire site and whether has being upgraded with TD LTE at this point.  Clearwire TD LTE deployment is divided into Phase 1 and Phase 2 until it has blanket the entire Clearwire Wimax network with LTE.  There are a lot of Phase 1 sites upgraded with TD LTE in many markets at this time especially the large markets and once Phase 1 is complete, Phase 2 will cover the rest of the remaining Clearwire towers until every single Clearwire tower is upgraded to TD LTE.

I used the Premier Sponsor information to locate B41 LTE sites upgraded in my area and have taken screenshots of speedtests and engineering menus to prove that I was using B41 LTE sites.  Let me tell you that speeds are FAST!!!!!

Since basically all 38,000 Sprint sites will be getting band 41 eventually, will that information be there too? Clearwire sites are separate from the 38,000 right?

  9. Sprint Spark coverage is just Band 41 LTE. Band 26 (LTE 800) coverage will be depicted in the orange with Band 25.

Sprint Spark is not Triband LTE, it is just Band 41 LTE. They want it separated out because it is capable of faster speeds. Band 26 is limited to the same speeds as Band 25. The purpose of Band 26 is just to extend coverage, not speed.

When Band 26 LTE starts going live, it will not be distinguishable on maps. Except for possibly pushing out the orange blob even farther.

Band 41 is yellow... So what is "turbo" then? It's not even yellow on the map (even though it's listed as a part of Sprint spark)

Sprint's explanation of "turbo": Enhanced LTE with super high speed capability

  10. Unlike most single band phones the triband phones shows your lte signal strenght bars which is probably lower than your 3g signal. All single band phones with the exception of the iphone 5, 5s, 5c and note 3 shows your 1x signal even when you have lte. Most people assume that this means they have great lte coverage and now sprint is basically correcting that.

I though it was just my Nexus 5 which reflected the data connection's signal in the signal bars... Interesting that all triband devices will do that. I wonder why.

Sounds compelling I may just have to upgrade ;)

  12. Picked up one from Best Buy today, attempted to price match and almost succeeded but they wanted to see the word Sprint somewhere on Google's store and we couldn't find it.  Looking forward to playing with it but may wait until Monday since my local store is doing an exchange on my One for cracks around the power button.

Not sure if it's too late but it definitely says Sprint under the Supported Service heading in the second page of the Technical specifications section of the Google Play Store listing of the Nexus 5: https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_5_black_16gb

^ Basically tri-band phones will soon be getting updates to enable bands 26/41 and "LTE UI enhancements" (probably adding the obnoxious spinning indicator)

Does anyone know when the Nexus 5 will get this? I wonder how updates will work considering Google's control over the Nexus 5...

  14. I dropped my phone (almost had a panic attack) and visually nothing happened. However, I just picked it up to make a phone call and when I put it against my ear I tapped it on the top of the backplate with my finger and I could hear some plastic rattle sound (which doesn't happen if I tap it on the bottom of the backplate). I'm afraid I broke off something on the inside? Or maybe I'm just paranoid after having dropped it... Could anyone confirm if tapping on the top of the backplate (while near the ear, otherwise can't hear) produces some type of plastic rattle sound?

Not sure about tapping but I do hear a slight rattling when I shake my phone near my ear... that's normal.

  15. Hey guys, I've noticed a weird thing about my new Nexus 5's screen. When held up to the light you can see matrix, almost like of pixels but they seem to large to be pixels. This can be seen when light is glaring off the screen especially, even if the screen is off. Is anyone else experiencing this, or just me?

Please check out these two pictures and you can kind of see what I'm talking about:

    Thanks!

  16. Hey guys I went to a sprint store today asking for a micro Sim for my n5 but they're saying it uses a special micro Sim that they don't have yet. Is this true, or can it use any old micro Sim (like one for the iPad)... They say they have 4 different types in stock

  17. Well... there's also the point about the 32gb version isn't in the Sprint database, so activation isn't possible for these even with a correct SIM...

Can you activate the phone without a SIM? So it can make phone calls and use 3G only before I get a SIM later?
