  1. A question for those much smarter than I.  Is there a way that someone who is familiar with radios could dive into the new .13 radio and decipher what change was made to enable spark?  Could this be implemented into a previous radio?  I know this would probably not be an easy task, but it was a thought I had earlier.

It's most likely not possible since the radio updates are in binary form, whereas things like AOSP based ROMs like CyanodenMod and kernels like Franco's kernel or the kernel page from Samsung, http://opensource.samsung.com/ are actual source code. That's why ROM developers love it when Samsung and other OEMs release their kernel source as soon as possible. It makes it easier to see what changes have been made so that they can easily change CyanogenMod, Slim ROMs, and put up modified TouchWiz/Sense/etc. kernels. Radios are never released in code form because they usually have some proprietary code specific to the radio/modem that the phone is using, so it's nearly impossible to reverse engineer what's in the radio.

  2. What is the new lte band priority with the update (25,26,41)? I had mine changed from before and it did not change with 4.4.3

I came from stock settings, Band 26 and 41 off, and after the update, mine turned into Band 26, on, priority 1, and Band 41, on, Priority 1, so my LTE priorities are B25 - 1, B26 - 2, B41 - 3.

As previously discussed in many different threads on this site, I don't think priority matters. Sprint's towers will move you to whatever Band it thinks you should be on. Even though B41 was Priority 3, I was able to connect to it just fine in the 1 place near work that I know that has it.

  3. Just checked the Sprint

support page for the n5, and Sprint said it was released 5/2/14. Probably just a typo that should have been 6/2. It also says that this is, in fact, the spark update. Judging by all of your comments, it seems like a disappointment. Like a kid who's promised an Xbox all year for Christmas, and gets socks .

It sounds like it depends on who you ask. I am personally very satisfied with this update. I finally have Spark working on my Nexus 5 seamlessly, and it seems like it's working in places that even the .15 radio wasn't able to for me. After I updated I did a profile update and I just left everything as it is: Mobile Preferred Network Type is Global, and all Band Priorities are set to 1 in the Edit menu.

  4. 4.4.3 update. Set my band priorities at B41-1, B26-0, and B25-0. My phone has stayed connected to B41 for hours. Speeds aren't as great as I thought it would be (20-30Mbps).

Yeah, it depends where you are for sure. I remember in LA at my parents' house, when I used the .15 radio, I was getting ~30 Mbps. Here in Orange County at the airport is where I got the ~62 Mbps I posted a few pages ago.

  5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/flashable-stock-4-4-3-supersu-t2771010

I didn't see where it said the SU package was in the .zip file. It said you had to Flash SU afterwards. Owell, I flashed it, took a while to flash/install. But I have had no bad effects, running ART, Root, and kept all of my apps with no issues yet, Besides a single force close of SCP when Testing its features.

Oh I see what your saying. The most likely case that you have, then, is that SuperSU is in your /data partition, so unless you wiped your data, you would have kept it.

  6. So is it me or Did I keep root when I flashed over the 4.3.3 zip on XDA? For some reason I thought I would of had to Reflash SU, but didnt have too. I am actually going to give the new setup , .13 included, today in town to see how well it performs in the city/buildings. If I lose b26 inside my work I will be reverting to .15 until b41 arrives lol

I have yet to see the OTA update.zip or an untouched unrooted stock flashable zip go up yet, so the ROM you flashed from XDA was most likely Pre-rooted, so you didn't have to do anything.

  7. iirc, those are the only three you need to flash to pretty much be completely upgraded without having wiped data, no?

pretty much. I was debating on waiting for a flashable zip, but I couldn't wait, plus I'm pretty comfortable using fastboot, so I decided to take the plunge.

  8. So I was able to try an area I tried to use the .15 radio in with the new update. It didn't connect right away, so I just did a profile update and prl update for the same of having a new radio. In the middle of the prl update, my phone switched to LTE and my prl update hung, probably due to the switch. Well...

  9. I fastboot flashed boot, radio, and system from the factory image, and then re-flashed SuperSU 1.97 through TWRP, and wiped cache and Dalvik Cache.

I didn't expect a non-OTA-update.zip method to enable the Spark bands, but it looks like B26 and B41 are now enabled. I currently have no way to test whether I can connect to B41 yet, but I'm going up to LA for my cousin's wedding this weekend, so I should be able to test B41 up there. I've gotten B41 at my parent's house in LA a while ago with the .15 radio, so I hope I see good results up there.

  10. I think I'm going to try another baseband .17 I could never connect to b41 and .23 killed my LTE reception. So I don't know what to do.

Edit- I flashed. 17 and. 23 and with both of those I could change the setting however I want to but with .15 I can't. Does anyone know why?

Well... The .15 radio was never released in an official OTA due to its bugginess with eCSFB, and who knows what else. I wouldn't be surprised if the issue you're seeing was one of the bugs that Google/LG knew to be squished between .15 and .17.

  11. Do any of you guys have a preferred custom recovery for the N5?

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

TWRP, for two reasons: It lets you backup your partitions separately (including your EFS partition, which is great for swapping PRLs and such), and it doesn't hold your backups hostage. ClockworkMod made a change a while back in the name of security which puts your backups in a location on the phone that you can't easily pull them to your computer. ROM Manager has a feature that allows you to access your CWM backups over HTTP to archive them on your computer, but it's paid-only.

Yeah, I used to be a huge fan of CWM recovery. I just got used to it from the OG EVO days. But that new security feature where I can't export my backup to a PC or something really killed it for me. TWRP all the way now.

  12. Does anybody know why it keeps adding a blank screen? I can't figure out why it does this. The only way I know how to get rid of it is to restart the phone.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

I've had that happen to me a few times as well. I never figured out what caused it, but I didn't really care too much.

  13. What kind of SOT you guys getting?

I'm, by all means, not a heavy user. I typically only use my phone for a quick look at my twitter feed or Facebook, looking at news related to tech, browsing forums like this one and doing a quick Yelp. At work, I only use it for phone calls, so I typically get ~1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours max. Right now I'm at 68% with 1 hour and 1 minute of screen on time after being off the charger for 14 hours, and in the 4 minutes it took to write this post, it's already down to 66%.

  14. When using Google now with the nexus 5 does anyone see a significant decrease in battery life?

I used to see a pretty noticeable difference with battery life with Google Now on pretty much all my android devices since I had the Epic 4G Touch. After going through different forums, I actually learned that it was simply location history that I had to turn off, and Google Now could still be on without sucking all of my battery life.

I now have Google Now on, but location history turned off on my Nexus. To turn it off, you can go to Settings -> Location -> Google Location Reporting ->  Location History -> Off. The other Google Service I know of that sucks battery life is Google+ Auto backup. I turn that off as well, since I'm not as paranoid as some people about keeping pictures saved to Google+ all the time.

I am currently at 93% battery life remaining after 7h 46m 4s  on battery, though I also have mobile data turned off since I work in a huge RF shield and I get pretty crappy Sprint signal in my office. Either way, it pretty much lasts me the whole day and I end up with around 60% left when I go to bed at 1 or 2 am.

  15. SMS and MMS require an active wireless data connection, and cannot be sent/received over wifi.

Only partially true because as I understand it carriers can enable MMS over WiFi. Sprint is the only carrier who has this. The 8sms messaging app settings verify this as far as I know but they might have removed the feature. But in the end it depends on if the carrier has enabled it on both ends.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

MMS does work over WiFi for Textra as well. I have it enabled in the app:

    Screenshot_2014-04-24-16-12-58.png

You can see I have prefer WiFi checked and I haven't missed any mms messages that I know of at home when I'm connected to WiFi. As a side note, I have Activate Mobile Data checked as well, but that's because I'm in a crappy signal area during work, so I disable mobile data, and if I don't have that option enabled, I'll miss MMS messages for obvious reasons.

  16.

Is anyone here noticing a significant amount of time without signal running .15? It only used 4% of my battery but I'm just curious to see other users time without signal.

I don't know the real reason for that 56% "time without a signal" number, but my guess is since the .15 radio is known to have issues with e/CSFB, and since I've seen screenshots way long ago where people were connected to LTE, but their notifications window showed "Searching for Service" instead of "Sprint", it's probably due to not being connected to CDMA all the time. I know people love to use the .15 radio as their daily driver, and if it works for them, it's perfectly ok, but there's a reason the first publicly released radio version was the .17 one.

    ...

After looking around, here's one of the posts that said that:

I have been playing around with the .15 and .17 radios and have discovered that my area has LTE800.  I was at a shopping mall over the weekend and noticed my LTE signal was going from -105 dBm to -115 dBm but I still had a fairly good internet speed.  I pulled up the engineering screen and noticed I was connected to Band 26 and a big smile was on my face.  At the time I was using the .15 radio and it was holding onto Band 26 for awhile, even with the dBm's going from -100 to -90.  However I did notice that my Nexus was searching for Sprint service when I was connected to Band 26. So I had Internet but no voice service.  Since I also want to be able to call or text from time to time, I decided to load the .17 radio back onto my phone and was able to get Sprint service again, but couldn't connect to Band 26 even with PRL pull, profile update or even an airplane mode toggle in the same area that I was getting Band 26.

So, what I have discovered is that I am happy to have Band 26 in my area and it was working great, my only problem is I can't take or receive calls or text while running .15.  Now if I am closer to a tower on the .15 radio, I do get Sprint service and could make a call if I needed to because I was connected to Band 25, but for now I have decided to stick with the .17 radio since it will give me both data and voice and just hope the next Google update includes the Sprint Spark update with a new radio which plays nicely with the towers in my area.

  17. Let's all just take a breather here. Honestly, we have been dealing with no spark for a long time and they pushed updates to fix the camera independently of a full system update. It will come soon. If it never comes then file a class action lawsuit if you are that upset about it. My guess is sprint will be forced to let people out of contracts and take returns on N5s if spark never comes. I am just as annoyed by the delays but all this complaining here won't do anything. Email dan@sprint if you want to complain about the delays.

    What this guy said :).

But really, I'm confident Spark is coming. Heck, we even know it's in the next update. We even know that the update exists somewhere out there, but it's not being pushed to the public yet. It's basically 100% confirmed that Spark is in the next update. We're just waiting for Google to finalize the update process.

  18. All they'll say is "it's a roll out, it may take a week to reach your phone"

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

I went onto twitter to call out @sprint and even included @googlenexus to see what the twitter CS reps would say. @Sprint responded with the "it may take a week" bs, and all is quiet on the @googlenexus front. Oh well. Anytime this week would satisfy me. If nothing is out by the 21st, Sprint definitely got shafted by Google by announcing an update that didn't happen, and I'll be a little disappointed, but not angry or anything. If it takes a month, I'll definitely be more disappointed.

What bothers me the most is actually how much more bad rep Sprint is getting for announcing an update that will probably show up in the next few days. I went onto XDA and there's so much "more Sprint lies" BS, that I think announcing an update this early is hurting their reputation more than anything. It's kind of sad how shortsighted people are, but what can I do?

  19. Remember guys, be patient. Sprint also jumped the gun a bit with KOT49H:

    http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/12/09/sprint-says-the-nexus-5-is-getting-an-update-to-kot49h-today-but-what-happened-to-kot49e/

[About KOT49H] This is the first we've heard about this new build number, and it's possible Sprint is just mistaken. However, maybe Google found something amiss and grabbed a newer build to push out. We've reached out to Sprint and will update if we hear back.

Update: Sprint's community moderator has told us that KOT49E was pulled

Update 2: It's Android 4.4.2 and it's coming to all Nexus devices. So the last build wasn't really pulled, it's just being updated.

Essentially, it looks like Sprint just likes to one-up Google by posting the update details before Google even makes it available.

  20. The update will probably start to seed out tonight or early tomorrow unless someone posted the info on Sprint's version page really early.

Then we can queue up all the posts people saying they didn't get it yet and their location. ;)

Take it from Google themselves when they said it, if you want it early in the rollout, load it yourself. It's super simple on an open phone.

Yup. I've already got my clean system image of KOT49H ready to be flashed, and I'm just waiting for someone to get the OTA .zip file on XDA or wherever it appears first.

  21. If Nexus 5 customers are such a minority in the world of Sprint, as some have asserted, shouldn't this rollout go very quickly? Anyone receive an update?

Since the Nexus 5 itself is generic hardware, like what jeremyvbk above said, it's entirely possible that all the people that get it today are actually on T-Mobile. Sprint posted themselves that the rollout will start today and should reach 100% on the 21st, so whether that's quick or not is up to your interpretation.

    https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/769011#769011

This update will be rolled out in batches from 4/14 - 4/21.

  22. I have a couple questions. I just had a call go straight to voice mail. No missed call just straight to voice mail. Could I have messed up a setting somewhere? Or is this the random crude we are putting up with right now?

The other question is I was looking at the settings quick toggles pull down and the "LTE" tile had the text orange then it went to grey like normal and back to orange a few times. What does that mean. I am getting a -80 signal it know its not losing the connection.

for the first, does it ring on the other side or not?  if it does, could be an issue with GV/hangouts.

for the second, I believe data connections turn orange when the device is connected to a network but no data is being transfered. apparently, Airplane mode toggle should help.  Happens to me randomly with any type of data connection.

Orange data icons, whether Wifi, 3G, or LTE, simply means you're not connected to Google's Services at that moment in time. You could technically have a perfect internet connection, but if Google's services are down, the icons will be orange. If you're using a custom ROM, it's possible that they can change the orange to mean "connected with no active data transfer", but the little up and down arrows usually indicate that, whereas orange means not connected to Google services.

As for the straight to voicemail issues, I've had that, but only when in a fringe signal area like where I work. I personally don't use GV or Hangouts.

  23. Yea I understand that AOSP is stock android with no custom framework but I just didn't understand if there was a difference from the AOSP and stock builds. For instance why is there a 'nexus 5 android development' and a 'nexus 5 original android development'. For HTC development I know this means different roms between Sense and AOSP respectively, but why is this distinction there on nexus phones? Do the kernels work with roms on either forum?

For the Nexus 5, stock ROMs come with Google's suite of apps like the Google Now Launcher, Chrome instead of the AOSP Browser, Hangouts instead of the AOSP messaging app, etc. That's essentially the main difference between them, since AOSP ROMs are usually built from source and require a separate Google apps package. Other than that, for the Nexus, a lot is the same.

Edit: Meant AOSP browser for comparing to chrome. :P

  24. What's the priority on the Lte band for a HTC M8? The reason I ask is because I have not picked up B41! On sprints coverage map it shows spark is available in my area which is LA county.

My Phone loves B25 which isn't bad at all but would like to see what spark speeds are like

My personal suggestion is become a Premier Sponsor if you can. They have all the Band 41 and Band 26 maps you'll need. Sprint's maps like to exaggerate like no other. For example, Sprint's maps show Irvine, CA covered in "Spark", however, I know thanks to the Premier Sponsor maps that that is not even close to the truth. Heck, we don't even have Band 25 covering major areas in Irvine.

In any case, I have personally seen band 41 on my Nexus 5 in my parents house near downtown LA and areas around that fit well with the Premier Sponsor maps. You may not be in an area that is really covered yet. Only the Premier Sponsor maps will show that.
