  1. So Verizon plans to turn off 3G by 2021.  When is Sprint going to turn off their 3G?  Personally I think 2021 is too late.  Verizon can turn it off in 2016 or a little later.  They have good LTE coverage and their LTE will cover all of the 3G areas pretty soon.  The only reason to do it that late is to give people enough time to switch their devices to new LTE capable devices.  There are also the cellular units for security systems.  Those can also be switched out in a couple years.  What else is 3G used for?

Once 3G is shutdown, that spectrum can be used for LTE, so that would allow for more bandwidth.

  2. Are the folks reporting LTE issues in some areas around CLT still having issues? For me, it seems LTE has disappeared. I work off Sardis, near Independance, and travel daily back home thru Pineville. I had been getting great, solid LTE signals on my Evo LTE, and now One...even before the "official" CLT announcement. Now, in the last two weeks, I can't seem to get or keep a 4G signal nearly anywhere. Occasionally if I restart the phone, it will briefly show a 4G connection, but as soon as something tries to access data, it immediately switches to 3G.

I even tried calling Sprint and having my phone re-provisioned to see if that made any difference. (It didn't) SO...has something gone crazy on my One, or are there really issues popping in the CLT LTE network of late?

I'm getting LTE now.  I was just at Sardis/Independence at the new Discount Tire store and I was getting full bars with LTE.  I got 20Mbps down and 5Mbps up.  Also I'm getting LTE at work so it seems they turned on a tower close to my work which is good news.  Try to wait it out a few days and maybe restart your phone every now and then.

  3. Got LTE back.  Hopefully it wasn't an issue with my phone.  It seems there have been no new sites with LTE since December.  What's the deal?  At first it seemed like Charlotte would be 100% LTE by the end of 2014, but now it is more like 2015.

  4. I'm still getting LTE in all the usual places between Kannapolis, Concord, Harrisburg, and the University area of Charlotte. My problem is that nothing new has popped up in any of the gaps I still have in over a month, with the exception of the tower at Stough Rd. & 49...and that tower is not impressive for coverage by any means.

I travel all over south Charlotte and a little bit of east Charlotte and I don't get LTE anywhere.  I was at Chipotle off 51 in Pineville and only picked up 3G.  I go there a lot and had LTE for the past few months.

  5. Nothing magical happened in the concord area at least where i live. I'm stuck in the middle of an LTE dead zone, but pick it up 1/8 of a mile from every which way. EXTREMELY disappointed of sprint They need to step their game up and quit being years behind technology! There should already be LTE almost everywhere 3G is by now.

I've got the same problem. I'm in a deadzone here in Charlotte and if you go quarter of a mile in any direction you will get LTE. :( Looking at the coverage map on Sprint's website my area has WIMAX and 3G.

  6. 3G is killing me. I use the maps app and navigation a lot even though I've been in CLT for 20 years. With 3G and good signal it still doesn't load the route info. With LTE and low signal it loads fast (2-3 seconds). I can't wait until all the towers are complete in Charlotte, and I'm hoping majority of the country is off 3G by the end of 2014.

  7. You mean Monroe & Sardis Rd. N.? or Monroe & Rama (which turns in to Sardis basically). I know there is strong signal at the latter intersection, didn't know about the Galleria area.

I think there is two towers in this vicinity. The one at Rama (near McClintock Middle) and the second one I noticed today at the corner of Monroe & Sharon Amity. I'm not sure if this one is a Sprint tower, but I was getting my car inspected and for the hell of it, looked at my phone; first time I had ever seen 4g. I had full bars, did a test and got 11 mbps down.

Pretty excited with this flurry of news I keep hearing/seeing.

Yeah, Sardis Rd. N near Galleria. Also got LTE on Randolph Rd at Cotswold yesterday. And today in Mint Hill (Lawyers Rd and Matthews Mint Hill Rd). I was using the maps today and was really glad LTE was in that area. Before I got to Mint Hill I was on 3G and maps would take forever to load (both Google maps and Apple maps).

Charlotte is lighting up with LTE!

  8. I highly doubt that they will raise the prices of existing contracts. They will probably raise the base rates for new customers. They won't do anything unless they feel they can sustain/grow their customer base. They will undoubtedly start disallowing SERO plans to be renewed at some point as they don't make jack from those contracts, so as long as they still have a decent customer base, they won't be hurt by losing those customers. Their customer satisfaction numbers will probably go up as well once they dump all those contracts.

SERO plans get 15% off, while SOME corporate plans get 25%. So I don't think SERO is killing them.
