  1. It is very important to have proper downtilt on their towers or people in the next state will be connected to that tower.

I wonder what kind of ping that would have.

As long as the SNR is fine, pings would be okay too. Light travels pretty fast you know...

186,000 miles per second. It isn't just a recommendation. It's the law.

  2. I have the HTC Touch Pro and the Mogul, but I figure those are ancient technology these days...they don't even have WiMAX :P

Never had signal issues on either phone though. It was kind of fun buying the Mogul with EvDO r0 and getting update after update that unlocked additional functionality on the phone (GPS, EvDO rev A, WinMo 6.1 if I remember correctly).

Oh, and running Android 2.1 on the Touch Pro, despite horrid battery life and no camera support, was fun.

  3. I for one am looking forward to the JB update. Having more control in the Notifications area would be nice.Plus smoothness...one less thing for iPhone users to gloat about to me (though, don't get me wrong, my phone is plenty fast).

As for the GB->ICS update, my thought there was that some devices might not get it due to not having enough RAM or similar. However the HTC One V has 512MB of RAM yet is running ICS from day one, so I guess that most Android devices could upgrade just fine (seeing as how the lowly Optimus One series of phones, currently stuck on Froyo, have 512MB of RAM).

  4. Has anyone received the LF9 software update? Do you know what it fixes?

Yes, and no. I do know that, after the firmware update and a Google Wallet update, Wallet started working for me...which it didn't when I got the phone.

  5. I've had to stop using the Sprint Connections Optimizer. If I have it on and drive away from WiFi at my home' date=' office, church...anywhere...about half the time it will not connect to data services on the macro network when I get out of WiFi range.

No 1x, no 3G. Nothing. Cycling through mobile network on/off, airplane mode and rebooting will not restore mobile data connectivity. However, in about 15 minutes it will finally come back on its own.

I disabled the Sprint Connection Optimizer and haven't had the problem since. I can break with WiFi now and it goes right to 3G data.

Anyone else notice this with the GS-III?

Haven't had those particular issues, though I have had instances where I could swear WiFi was turned off before but magically turned on sometime afterward. Going to disable the optimizer to see whether that fixes the issue, since if I know I'm not going to be in an area with WiFi I don't want to waste energy looking for it.

  6. So I went to the tasting room (to put it fancily) at Coors today, an area notorious for being a cell signal black hole, at least for T-Mobile and Sprint.

My Epic had a hard time staying connected to the cell network there, and would flip to roaming/no signal. The GSIII did some of the same thing, but I was able to place a clear call from within the room, send/receive text messages and even update my GMail without too much of an issue, depending on where I was standing.

So, subjectively, I won't say that the phone is a significant improvement RF-wise over the Epic (I didn't have the Epic with me as well to test). But I think it was at least a marginal improvement.

What's funny is that there is a cell site just a couple blocks away from the brewery (810 East Street). My phone is bouncing between that site and one closer to me right now. I guess brewing equipment...and Coors' building...make for excellent 1900MHz blockers.

  7. Going back to the "my signal is stronger than yours" argument...the signal is usually in the -40s. Crazy talk...but that's what happens when the cell site is a block and a half away.

I would get pictures, but I would need to climb up on a mountain or somethig to be able to see the roof of the four-story building where the site sits. Maybe tomorrow, since mountains aren't exactly in short supply around here :)

  8.

I think pretty much all of those things are due to the faster processor and 2GB of RAM

Wouldn't say that. I have seen very responsive WiMAX performance on my Epic, network permitting. The CPU and memory certainly weren't the bottleneck on thay device for 3G, seeing as how I could hit 20Mbps down on WiFi speedtests.

  9. I wonder if Boost Mobile will start offering Mobile Broadband like Virgin Mobile.

My guess is "no" since Boost seems to have a different market focus (plan-wise, to an extent phone-wise) than Virgin. Could they? Sure, but why do so when your sister company has the exact same service? Besides, doing Shrinkage on a mobile broadband plan probably won't increase customer loyalty the same way that Shrinkage on a mobile phone plan does.

  10. As a side note, subjectively this phone is comparable to, or better than, the Epic with regard to keeping/using a 3G or 1x signal. Voice calls connect very quickly, and data sessions seem solid enough. Then again, I live literally a block and a half from a Sprint rooftop cell site, though I no longer have near-line of sight when I'm in front of my apartment due to the new Petroleum Engineering building being constructed on-campus.

  11. Makes sense. On my Epic I actually used LauncherPro (the free version at this point) plus Beautiful Widgets for clock/weather. So far though I haven't gotten fed up with TouchWiz though. If I do at some point though, someone actually rebuilt the stock ICS launcher from stock code (modifications were made so it runs without crashing on the SII), so I may give that a go.

I actually had LauncherPro set up on my Epic so that the apps button wasn't even in the dock :P. Just pressed the home button again to pull up the app menu. That would be less efficient on the SIII due to its hardware home button, but then again with four screens I have enough space to put all my most-used apps, without having to dive into the App Drawer (which I re-sorted alphabetically...sorting willy-nilly bugs me).

  12. I may have to pick up some TagStand tags as well.

Robert, which launcher are you using? I liked TouchWiz enough that (shocker!) I'm still using it as my launcher, complete with the stock Weather widget.

Also, is there any way to swap out the lock screen shortcuts or something else? e.g. I might want to get a different memo app.

  13.

Just wanted to let you two know that the evo does not come with beats headphones.

Good call. I read somewhere that HTC was no longer including the Beats in-ears even with phones that have Beats Audio support.

  14. How much RAM does the OG Evo have? I seem to remember 384MB, which is the same as my OG Epic. Guess that means that Sense/Gingerbread is a pretty heavy skin, since performance actually *improved* on the Epic as it went from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread, at least in my experience.

  15. Keep in mind that the iBeats that come with the Evo are VERY heavy on bass, to the point that you will want to get "normal" earphones for instances when you aren't playing rap or hip-hop.

  16. Not everyone goes on-contract for tablet 3G/4G. The iPad actually does not get sold on a contract...you just buy a month of data when you need it, at the amount you need. The data pack does auto-renew, but you can turn it off with no penalty.

That said, the iPad is far from subsidized...it's $130 more for the 4G version than for the 3G one!

  17. This is my first post on my 32 Gig'er. First impressions are good. I may write my own review comparison article with the EVO. The screen is amazing and nothing like I was expecting. Much better than the Galaxy Nexus and seems similar to the EVO.

I too am impressed with the screen quality. Also, make sure to enable all the nifty motion gestures. They're disabled by default.

I gotta say, going to a contact and then just holding up the phone to call them feels like I'm living in the future :P

  18. I have the KF as well, but haven' tused it in awhile. It may get donated to an immediate family member soon, though that doesn't necessarily mean I'll pick up the N7 right away. Then again, I have a 10" tablet that I use these days for everything...though there are plenty of cases where I'd use a 7" tablet where a 10" wouldn't be.

One thing to note is that the N7 is slightly longer, ever-so-slightly wider and ever-so-slightly thinner than the KF.

  19. I'll be in Fort Worth for a few days starting the 18th, after which I'll probably end up in San Antonio for a few hours at least. I'll be sure to test out LTE thoroughly while I'm there. I can even compare with T-Mobile (DC-)HSPA+ and Verizon LTE...though the comparisons might not be fair since I'm comparing effectively data cards (T-Mobile Rocket 3, VZW iPad 3) with a phone.
