Apple uses your whole face and creates a 3D key. If you have ever used the Microsoft Kinect - It’s the same system but more modern. Apple bought the company that developed it.

FaceID didn’t fail on the demo Samsung has been increasing its prices prior to Apple. Note both brands still at under $700

I believe, might be miss reading your long post though You can’t think of cable companies as being locked to their native region. Most will soon offer OTT solutions on a national level. I might not be reading your post correctly... But I think too many people think Sprint would be buying Charter. If it were to happen, SoftBank is buying Charter and using it's US presence to be the tool. And I'd suspect the surviving name would be Charter or a whole new name.
