  1. Dunno if there's any point to posting these, but I did confirm the Benton Harbor upgrade with pics today. Unfortunately the whole lot (not just the fenced area) was marked "No Trespassing" so I just took pics from across the street. I would have liked to get closer, but at least it was only a 200ft tower.

Also, these pics are huge, so view the full pic if you want to zoom in and read the writing on the panels and RRUs (the panels are made by Powerwave). I may go back on a clearer day with a longer lens and try to get everything readable.

    EDIT: ugh...nevermind my first edit

Dude! I thought I had some nice pics on here, but those close-ups are pure Awesome!

    Thanks :)

  2. I did, and all my location services were running, it thought it was on the east coast.

First I want to point out, I am not, and don't claim to be, an expert with the Sensorly program, I'm just trying to help and tell you what works for me and my understanding of the app.

I just start the app, go to this screen, hit start and let it sit there and do it's thing...

    2013-01-24_22-54-26.jpg

All I do is occasionaly glance at the numbers going up.

As far as I know, when you call up the map (as mentioned above) in the app it seems to always start in New York for the displayed map location of ALL data from all users, and you would need to scroll the map to see the area you are in.

I don't think it will draw the coverage data on your display "live" as you are driving around. I believe it stores the data, and uploads it in small packets to Sensorly's server over time, and it will add it to the map after it has been uploaded.

If you click Menu on the bottom of the screen, and then Details, it will show a screen like this...

    2013-01-24_23-06-02.jpg

You can see in this screen cap that it still has 20 Messages to send.

You should probably also check in " Parameters > Reporting " and see how it is set for sending, like only over WIFI or while charging, and either adjust the option, or meet that standard by plugging the charger in or connecting to WIFI.

For me, when I am done scanning, I hit Stop, then when I check the details and see it has no more messages to send, if I look at the map, I see my tracks.

But, if you are trying to watch it happen in real time on a map, I don't think you can do that, but it shouldn't take very long to show up once you have the data uploaded.

I may be wrong about any or all of this, and if someone knows better please chime in, I may learn something too.

  3. I'll be running through Byron Center again today. I'll sensorly the trip and see where else coverage is.

Don't know if anyone else was up in the Morley area or not, I missed seeing it hit, when I drove thru there this afternoon. Had to take the work truck to Big Rapids and had Sensorly running. When I got back to GR, I saw the app said I had hit 62 LTE points. I had to look at the map to see where! I would have passed thru there about an hour before you posted that. You're quick if those are my dots, because you found them before I even knew where I got the signal at!

  4. Did I just overlook this before? I never noticed this on my account.

Pretty cool, but kinda late, I don't call anyone with a landline caller ID name anymore. Hell I really don't know anyone with a landline anymore.

Cool! Thanks for pointing that out, I never knew about it. I don't call many landlines either, except for work, my mother (who has had the same landline for 49 years), and ordering an occasional pizza. I guess there are few businesses I call once in a while that don't really matter, but it always seemed weird, mine always showed up as "SPSV" or something stupid like that. I always wished it would say the more common "CELLULAR CALL" or something like that. I'm gonna put my name in there now.

  5. Yep, optical is the way to go. Unfortunately the Powershot line are too big for that pocket point and shoot that I'm looking for.

Although the Nikon pocket size with removable lens is appealing.

Sorry for the delayed response, saw this the other day but was kinda busy at the time and then it slipped my old man mind. (it sucks getting old, but it beats the alternative) That does look like a nice camera, but just a bit more than I wanna drop right now, and I'm kinda partial to Canon right now since that's my current unit, and I do kinda like the big lens out front. I stopped in to Best Buy on Saturday night and purchased the Canon SX500. I was kinda surprised at how much lighter and smaller it was from my S5 IS, but I was very impressed with how the Image Stabilization worked. Kinda nice especially for those long zooms. But everyone has their own things that they like and if you go with that Nikon, I'm sure you can get some great pics and enjoyment from it. I'll be looking forward to seeing some nice tower shots from you if you get it. Overall more people having a good zoom lens camera will help us all to identify all that glorious new NV equipment! Haven't had a chance to do much with mine yet, but I hope to have some great shots posted here soon.

  6. Hey ya'll...first time poster long time lurker. I drove through byron with sensorly going tonight....looks like most Byron has 4g, stretches up into south wyoming. I think metro village might even be covered, i'll check that out tomorrow or the next day.

So I wasn't the only one to go out late on a Sunday night in less than pleasant weather. I think Metro will get SOME coverage, I didn't go into the campus, but I was heading North on Byron Center Ave and lost it just before the new Speedway, but I stopped in there since I needed fuel, and $.10 off a gallon there with a Rewards card. I managed to toggle it back on and took it almost to 52nd St. It will be rough in that area since there are Sprint antennas on the water tank nearby that are not NV updated (that I know of). But, when those get fired up, people in the Metro Health Campus will sure enjoy it.

  7. Looks like someone got LTE in Byron

Looks like you caught me in progress last night, I hit a few more spots since you got that screen cap. There is still plenty of area to map out there, I mostly just ran the major East/West and North/South routes. It goes pretty damn good to the West, mostly flat and open out that way, then it runs uphill for a bit, very nice! Then it, geographically and signal wise, all goes down hill! I did have to toggle airplane mode a few times on high spots in other areas to get it back after a loss. Looks like the start of something good!

  8. . The small panels look like they get plugged in to the bigger ones. But you're saying the smaller ones run down to the base station? The pictures look like the small ones connect to the new LT E that's why I thought it was new equipment.

OK, now I think I really see what you are talking about, circled in blue is the new NV Antenna panel, (the tall thing), the shorter things on the side, still in the blue circle with wires going to them are the Radios or RRU's.

  9. Back to your pictures. When you have circled legacy and NV, I thought sprint put out new LTE panels and also the other panels. So I thought the lower 1 was the old sprint equipment. Did I miss something?

OK, I think I might have missed a word that would have helped me understand what you meant. Each one of those horizontal triangle shaped racks is equipment from other vendors (edited for bad word choice) MOBILE SERVICE PROVIDERS . I don't know which ones for sure, but say the levels above and below might be ATT or Verizon.

  10. OK, let me try again. They are adding NEW equipment next to OLD equipment.

Prior to "Network Vision" Sprint offered mobile phone service, they needed panel antennas and radios to provide that service.

They are upgrading their equipment to bring the new LTE service, along with other service improvements.

When they are satisfied that the new equipment will function properly they will take down the old stuff.

There are 2 reasons I have old and new equipment in my pictures. 1. It would not be easy to get a pic of just the new stuff on a tower, because it is too close to the old stuff,

    2. Also, I point out what each looks like to make it easier for people to spot what they are looking for, since these panels will all be right next to each other.

I hope that helps :). If not maybe I don't understand your question. Please let me know.

  11. Back to your pictures. When you have circled legacy and NV, I thought sprint put out new LTE panels and also the other panels. So I thought the lower 1 was the old sprint equipment. Did I miss something?

What other panels? NV Panels broadcast both 3G and 4G on 1900 and 1x on 800. No need for other panels right now. The legacy panels will be coming down at some point this year.

Like that. Or in other words, the panels circled in green have always been there, the panel circled in blue is the new panel and remote radios for NV on all Sprint bands. Soon the panels circled in green will be removed.

    .

  12. You have an awesome camera lens, I can almost read the site ID off the panel.

Thanks. It really isn't anything all that special, it's an old Canon Powershot S5-IS, that I picked up at Circuit City about 5 years ago for about $300. The trick for getting good close ups like that is having a camera with a 10x OPTICAL zoom or better and also take the picture in the higher resolution range. I emphasized the word OPTICAL for a reason, "digital zoom" on most cameras is a fluff feature, it doesn't do much good. You need that big lens in front. My camera is a 12x zoom that takes 8 megapixel images. I have been thinking about buying one that Best Buy has on sale right now. It is a Canon Powershot SX500, that camera has 30x OPTICAL zoom and takes 16 megapixel images. Only $249.99. That unit would get some awesome tower close ups, for those sites in hard to reach places!

  13. So which panels exactly am I looking for on these towers? Can someone point out legacy vs NV panels in a photo for me please? Sent from my XT897 using Tapatalk 2

That tutorial from digiblur is a very good reference, and just in case you want to see it applied to the tower you have already looked at / may want to go look at again, here are 2 of my shots from the Byron Center tower with highlights added.

This first one is the zoomed image, the legacy equipment is circled in GREEN, and the NV equipment is circled in BLUE.

    https://dl.dropbox.c...ed%20hilite.jpg

and here is a long shot where I cloned the tower (if only it was that easy for real towers) and highlighted one of the towers the same colors as above.

    I hope this helps.
