That makes sense. The timing of the SS announcement seems a little bit odd in relation to the rumored/anticipated announcement of the N5.

I currently have the EVO LTE and am wondering about upgrading.

I'm curious, with today's announcement of Sprint Spark and the first Tri-band phones being the S4 and S4 Mini coming Nov 8, One Mega, followed by an ota'd G2 in 2014, where does the Nexus 5 fit in?

I don't know if it is related or not, but lately my EVO LTE gets hung up trying to sync my Gmail and some of the other Google services.

This post kind of has me scratching my head.

First, if you've done any reading around here you should realize "flaming" others is generally frowned upon.knee-jerk responses are not what S4GRU is about. That's one of the reasons i enjoy around here.

Second, then pitting the EVO vs the iPhone, Android vs iOS, and Sprint vs T-Mobile, seems to be inviting flames.

Third, what does EVO vs the iPhone and Android vs iOS, have to do with Sprint vs T-Mobile?

Fourth, "Please convince me to stay! lol.", lol? Really?

Finally, fifth, do your homework. Read up around here.

Oh I do understand that there is a difference between purple showing up on sensorly and that signal being usable. To some extent, at least here in Baton Rouge, this is an issue with the differences between phones. My EVO LTE is picks up a fraction of the LTE from our 2 active towers compared to Digiblur's Note2. However, it is pretty strong and not quite accurate language to say that "None of downtown has any LTE" when there clearly is LTE downtown just not usable by you. Not trying to pick a fight just clarifying language. If Sprint is claiming blanketed coverage of Austin then I agree that they are not doing themselves any favors in the PR department.

I haven't been to Austin to check out the LTE coverage, but how do reconcile this...

My only complaint about Sprint is that they are dramatically overstating their LTE coverage on the maps, here in Austin. None of downtown has any LTE yet the maps show Austin blanketed in orange. This is misleading and deceptive. Fortunately I know better because I'm an S4GRU sponsor, but if I was any other consumer expecting to get Sprint LTE in Austin I'd be pissed. Sprint even has a big yellow billboard on I-35 stating that they are Austin's only unlimited LTE provider, yet in a huge chunk of the city, there is no LTE. I know they are trying to lure customers back from the other providers but they should at least have robust LTE in downtown before they show Austin blanketed on their coverage maps.

I already have plenty of pics of the site itself. I don't think you can see the cabinets with that very busy tower either. But the picture I'm specifically looking for is the service pole right by the street as you pull into that parking lot (for sale restaurant). Look at this link at the last pic. Curious if the orange conduit still looks like this?

I was by that site on Saturday and, yup, it looks just like that. Still not hooked up. In fact it looks just like this one on Sotile off of Highland behind Ruffino's: ( though this one doesn't have the other equipment either)

In fact it also looks like the the Embassy Suites site on Constitution (I-10 frontage road). Empty orange conduit sticking up next to tthe little green telephone "pylon" next to the telephone pole in front of the Sprint site. I didn't bother to take a picture of that one.

I went by the site behind Ruffinos on Highland this morning. No new panels or RRUs up that I could see, and the cabinets are inside a privacy fence inside a fenced business. But there was new orange conduit sticking up out of the ground next to the closest telephone pole. Looked like they were getting ready for new backhaul.

I've been out of town the past week. Saturday I went around by the Bluebonnet PO site, and as Dbrow's picture shows, nothing new. I was hoping there would be some thing new. When I left the office Monday morning to go to the airport, there was a cable contractor with a horizontal drilling rig getting ready to run conduit down the street (Linkwood Ct.) which would lead in the direction of the tower and there really isn't much on Linkwood other than a few businesses and a big apartment complex. I would have thought that the apartment complex would already have fiber installed. I know our office is already on Cox fiber.

I've also seen a some cable contractor equipment parked over in front of the Embassy Suites area. I have no idea if it is really related to running backhaul for Sprint, but my mind would love to think that it is.

There won't be many adjustments. Probably in between the these two cells since they are pretty close but that's probably already set. Look at the Flannery/Old Hammond site, it's eastern neighbor is all the way in Denham Springs. They are going to have to squeeze out all the coverage they can from these sites in order to cut down on the islands of LTE. So any downtilt would kill the coverage on this site. We're going to look like a Wimax coverage map until 800SMR LTE is here 100%. The tower spacing was designed for 1X handsets with external antennas on them. Luckily 800SMR will fix a LOT of these issues.

I was just playing around a bit with sensorly and google earth and noticed that:

• We have stray purple dots from Siegen to Central, a distance of about 14 miles north-south, and
  
• From downtown to Denham Springs, also a distance of about 14 miles, east-west.
  
• The Florida/Sherwood and Old Hammond/Flannery towers are relatively close together, about 2 miles apart.
  
• On my EVO LTE I was able to hold on to the 4G signal from about I-12 going north on Sherwood to Greenwell Springs at the Comite River, a distance of about 6 miles.
  
• Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to check my phone reception east to west.
  
• These are all crow-flying distances.
  

So what does all this mean? Anecdotally, there are other phones out there (Note2, iPhone, others?) that can detect 4G LTE about twice as far from the tower as my EVO LTE, but when I was picking it up, it was usable. Others (digi or dbrow?) will have to say whether what they were picking up was usable.

Anyway, that's my elementary analysis of the data at hand. Wouldn't it be nice to have data from more than just two towers?

I really wish I could say there was another tower active, but...that strip of purple really hasn't changed over the last week or so and I've been by it a number of times with no 4G to be found on my EVO LTE. There just seem to be a number of over-achieving phones out there picking up the two sites that we know to be active. This town is being covered with stray purple dots and stripes of 4G that isn't usable. My theory is that they have sites set to have the greatest coverage right now at the expense of usability until more sites come on line. It gives the appearance of greater activity.

Since the OP stated EVO 4G the assumption was it was an EVO 4G instead of an EVO 4G LTE.

I strongly suspect that it is the Sherwood/Florida Blvd site. It seems they have just adjusted the two current towers to maximize coverage at the expense of usefulness and that certain phones will latch on to a much weaker signal. If it isn't either of the two known 4g sites, the only other possibility would be on the building at United Plaza.

Dbrow, what kind of phone was that on? I go through that intersection 4 times a day and have never picked anything up.there is a tower real close but I doubt it is it.

Went by the Jefferson/Corporate site today to confirm the RRUs. ... There was fresh set of orange paint lines and new fiber conduit ran to the service pole. Cox has fiber on this pole as well as an AT&T box here so I have no idea who the vendor would be.

I've been seeing an EATEL crew stringing lines up along Perkins in various areas between Bluebonnet to College. I assume it is fiber. Could they be the backhaul vendor? I know that several of the towers that Sprint is on in Gonzales and Prairieville are EATEL towers. Those towers look bare but for the legacy Sprint panels on them. I also seem to remember some deal that EATEL had with Light Squared http://www.fiercetel...ship/2011-11-28

The sprint store on bluebonnet swears this is there tower right behind their store... Doesn't look like it to me but like I said I'm new

My office is just down the street from this one. I've always been amused by the Sprint corporate store with the Verizon tower right next to it (the actual Sprint site is at the Post Office). Kind of like the Google aerial photo of the Sprint tower in New Orleans with the ATT truck clearly visible leaving the parking lot.

This morning on my way to work I checked out the purple sensorly stripe on Seigen. My EVO LTE wasn't picking up anything other than 3G. It certainly wasn't coming from the Seigen/Burbank tower or the Bluebonnet Post Office. I did notice while on Seigen headed toward Burbank that because you are up on the Highland ridge (such as it is in south Louisiana) in the rearview mirror you have a clear line of sight basically all the way to the horizon which is right in line with the Old Hammond/Flannery tower. As far as that is, I suspect that is what was mapped by someone's Note2 and is showing up on sensorly.

On another note.. Anyone notice the odd strip of LTE on sensorly at Perkins heading up Siegen in BR?

 

Doesn't make much sense to me given the direction it is going along with the area. Unless a site was activated that we can't see like the rooftop at Essen.

I drove up that section of Seigen just yesterday afternoon and found nothing. I don't see how either of the two known towers could be responsible. But morning I'll find out when I go to work on Bluenonnet near Perkins.

This is bit off topic from sensorly. But anyway, I'm getting a bit irritated by Pocketables. They used to be the site I would go to for EVO specific information. Now it seems to be primarily grumbling by people who are itching to drop Sprint/HTC/EVO. The data they used in this chart is right from S4GRU but it is presented ambiguously. The term "completion" seems to be conflated with "coverage" without clarification. We know that Sprint is mostly behind schedule, but when you look at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds, it is apparent that tthey are not comletely behind schedule. If I'm not mistaken, the same S4GRU page from which Pocketables pulled the data for the above graph shows that there are lower tier markets that are ahead of schedule.

With all the rain lately, the access road to this tower is under water.

I went by this site several weeks ago,and,based on everything I've learned from digiblur, decided that that top rack was AT&T. Note the tower at the corner of Burbank and Seigen by the soccer complex has NV equipment on it.

I would suggest readiing through the the information available here on S4GRU.COM. There are a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful folks that frequent this site. Learn about the issues involved with deploying Sprint's Network Vision. Learn how to identify the signs of activity - what the panels, RRUs and base cabinets look like. Before you know it, your friends and family will be giving you strange looks when you talk about going out tower-spotting and the anticipation of seeing the first purple spots show on Sensorly maps. In other words, learn how to enjoy the wait.

I had a similar experience, where Malwarebytes out of the blue started blocking the Sensorly IP. I pursued it with Malwarebytes. Before we reached a resolution, it started working again. Because of the timing I was wondering if it had something to do with Java.
