I'm afraid to call tech support or do anything because my phone is rooted with a custom ROM and when I had US Cellular they shut my phone off when they found this out and I had a pain in the ass of a time getting it back, so I'd rather avoid Sprint tech support.

You will probably be glad to hear that Sprint doesn't really care if your device is rooted. Sprint policy is to repair rooted phones just like non-rooted phones. Check out this article: http://www.acsyndicate.net/dear-sprint-thanks-for-the-memo/

They are not obligated to service a device with a custom ROM, though I have heard of people getting phones serviced with CyanogenMod installed and of Sprint reps who themselves used custom ROMs. YMMV, of course. Not all stores or reps are equal.

Mine shows the correct type of signal (3G, 4g, 1x). However the bars for everything but 4g aren't accurate. See screenshot. Network signal monitor is accurate because I know I'm in a 5 bar signal area, but my CM bars say I've got nothing.

I'm not sure why it's wrong for you, but mine shows an accurate signal. I get one bar of LTE in my driveway. When I'm on 3G, it fluctuates between one and two bars, and if it switches to 1x, I get 3 or even a full 4 bars. I know my LTE signal is accurate because my status under About Phone shows my LTE signal at -110dBm~-120dBm. I know that my 3G signal is accurate because on my EVO 4G, before Network Vision, I used to fluctuate between no bars/1x and one bar, occasionally up to 2. My current signal matches the ever-so-slight increase one would expect from Network Vision.

When I'm in an area with a strong 3G signal, the bars fill up like they're supposed to. I've never had a problem with the signal reported on my phone.

  3. I heard that custom AOSP roms have trouble with 4g handoffs or something to that effect. Can anyone here relate any problems that they have noticed with AOSP roms like CM 10.1 or the like and LTE? I love AOKP but since LTE is popping up in my area like herpes I don't want to miss out on it because it won't keep a connection very well.

The handoff works fine now. It got fixed just before the 10.1 nightlies, so it works fine on any 4.2 AOSP ROM.

This shows the sad state of journalism in our country.

Well, at least the guy is OK. I'm sure this won't delay the upgrade for too long. They will probably take a day or two to double- and triple-check their safety precautions, but I'm sure the upgrades will resume by Monday at the latest.

  5. Sprint has launched Chicago. It's on their coverage maps over the whole city. That's official to me. I changed them to launched on the NV Running List.

Even though they aren't complete, they are farther along in the Chicago market than even any other Sprint market. Launched or not.

Robert via Samsung Note II via Tapatalk

Maybe I missed it, but the last time I saw Chicago included in an announcement, it specifically said it was only for the suburbs, not the city. Does anyone have an official quote?

  6. So I'm noticing a delay of about 10 seconds or so before the LTE connection gets moving. What I mean is I'll type msn.com into my phone browser and I'll wait a good 10 seconds before the page starts to download, which at that point it is quick to load the images and elements. I've noticed the same thing with Speed tests...I'll tap begin start and wait 5 seconds before it begins.

Is this normal? I'm guessing it might be related to DNS/waiting to resolve ip addresses or something but haven't done much research beyond this observation.

For reference, I'm in a market which is testing but has not yet launched.

I'm not sure why you're getting a delay in your speed tests. Those are instantaneous for me. However, I have noticed when web browsing, if I tap one of the links on my Chrome New Tab Page, there will be a good 2 or 3 second delay before the page starts loading, at which point it loads extremely quickly. I always just attributed it to Chrome. Your problems sound a little more extreme, though. It shouldn't take 10 seconds for the page to start loading, regardless of the browser.

Does this happen over 3G, too, or only 4G?

  7. I was in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area at the Double Door last night. I got 4G a few blocks (south?) from the Double Door but not in the building. I'm not sure if it's a building penetration thing, because I forgot to check outside the building, but LTE is in Wicker Park, if not covering it.

I searched the thread and only found a result from September, so I figured I'd post this in case anyone was wondering about that area.

Oh, and I didn't get to map it on Sensorly because I needed my GPS also and do not own a car charger, so I couldn't risk the battery drain. Sorry about that.

  8. My device is definitely slower since upgrading to Jelly Bean OTA.

    Even after 2 factory resets.

It feels like a previous generation device, a performance downgrade, rather than the upgrade I thought would take the S3 to the next level. definitely disheartening.

I'm using CM10 on my S3, and it's the smoothest, best phone experience I've ever had. Jellybean is amazing when it works well.

If you're not the rooting/ROM-flashing type, have you tried disabling all the Samsung bloatware you don't use? When I first got my S3 and was still running TouchWiz, I disabled any and all Samsung apps I could, and the RAM availability and performance increased twofold.

  9. Sensorly keeps screwing up for me. I turn on 4G (wimax) and load er up.....but whenever I get near a wifi signal I automatically get kicked off 4G and put into wifi, even if its the kind of wifi that requires browser log in. Giant pain.

Interesting that no one figured this out yet with all the Sensorly devotees around, but I'll help you out.

When you open Sensorly, go to the settings, and scroll down to General. Chances are you have both "Scan WiFi networks" and "Force WiFi on" checked. Just uncheck those, and all will be well.

  10. Forgive me if I am repeating something that has already been answered, I thought they were deploying LTE-Advanced on the 800MHz spectrum they had? That's what I remember reading a year ago when they first talked about Network Vision after that disastrous October 2011 investors meeting. Did that change, since everyone here seems to talk about LTE 800, or is it understood by default that LTE 800 is LTE-A 800?

They are still rolling out 1xA on 800MHz. They are also rolling out LTE (not LTE Advanced, at least not initially) on the 800MHz spectrum. Whether or not they roll out LTE or LTE-Advanced doesn't matter so much, because Sprint is eventually upgrading all LTE to LTE-Advanced at the same time over all frequencies. Plus, the upgrade is a simple software upgrade, so it's not really a big deal.

  11.

Yeah, I read quite a bit about it and it looks like it's both. Thing is, it seems to drop anytime there is an LTE signal available. If there isn't one, 3G seems to work fine.

I think that's the part that's NV-related. I couldn't keep the 4G connection to save my life while nearby towers were being upgraded. Thing is, I had the same behavior on the stock Touchwiz ROM, except it held the 3G connection fine. It just didn't stay connected to 4G. So, it was no different for me on TW or CM except that CM wouldn't hold the 3G connection.

  12. Is anyone having issues losing data connection around the Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates/Elgin area? Like, frequently? I put a new AOSP ROM on my phone, and I'm wondering if that could be the culprit or if it's just Sprint's network.

I'm beginning to think it's the ROM, but I wanted to get some other feedback first.

I have CM10 on my S3, and LTE works fine on my phone in Schaumburg. I haven't been to the northern part of Schaumburg in a while, though, since I live in the southern part and work in Addison.

FWIW, AOSP ROMs on the S3 have trouble keeping a 3G connection, so if you're not getting LTE, the data drops kind of frequently. If I'm not mistaken, there are a couple towers in the northern Schaumburg/HE area that are awaiting upgrades, and my phone had the hardest time keeping a 4G connection while nearby towers were being upgraded. It kept falling back to 3G, which meant CM10 would disconnect constantly.

So, your problems are partly ROM-related, but also partly NV-related. Once the towers in those areas are completed, you should have no trouble holding a 4G connection on an AOSP ROM.

  13. AT&T definitely cares about Sprint/SoftBank. They are scared. Financial limitations are what kept Sprint from being competitive with the duopoly. AT&T knows that previous hindrance is being removed.

Robert via Nexus 7 using Forum Runner

That's true, but if the duopoly is removed and balance is restored, then AT&T will be less restricted in future acquisitions. So they may lose ground in the beginning, but the level playing field works both ways. Yeah, they may have to try harder to compete and expand, but they're more likely to obtain the necessary resources to do so.

Just about anything could happen for AT&T if the buyout goes through. They may lose their competitive advantage for good. They may stumble but regain traction. They may be able to swing future FCC decisions in their favor and gain ground not only on Sprint but on Verizon as well. AT&T knows this, as they said in their press release, "This is one more example of a very dynamic and competitive U.S. wireless marketplace, which is an important fact for U.S. regulators to recognize." I don't think AT&T are so much "scared" as they are anxious to see how this plays out and apprehensive of possible consequences. They are cautious but assessing their possible advantages in the situation. They could be planning to convince the FCC to redistribute (or whatever would happen) Clearwire spectrum in the wake of the buyout, especially if Clearwire or their spectrum becomes a major factor in the deal. I wouldn't it put anything past AT&T at this point. I'm sure AT&T can afford very clever attorneys should AT&T need them.

  14. After I got the OTA but didn't start it right away, I used this method to load Jelly Bean and it ultimately worked. However, the first couple of times that I tried it, I missed the "force stop" step, and from that point forward (even after the successful J B update) my S3 isn't able to find the CDMA BID, NID, BSID, nor any of the other CDMA identifying characteristics. This is the case in Netmonitor and CDMA Field Test, and Sensorly fails to detect 2G/3G data (though it does find LTE). Everything else including calling, text, and data seem to work perfectly (and also seem to be somewhat snappier with J B ). What have I done??? And how do I fix it???

Did that stuff stop working before or after the JB update? If it stopped working afterwards, then it may just be a part of the update. I know they changed something in the RIL, because MSLReader is no longer able to find the MSL number on JB-updated phones. Maybe this is related. I don't use the stock ROM, so I can't check if it works for me. Anyone else?

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with missing the "Force Stop" step of the directions.

  15. I did read the article. I actually read it from multiple sites as to get many perspectives on the matter. They all seem to share the same theme that AT&T isn't happy at all with the amount of spectrum sprint, a now Japanese majority owned company will have control of in the American wireless industry if it gains control of clearwire's spectrum holdings.

"Watch out, Sprint (S): AT&T (T) hasn’t forgotten the role you played in wrecking its proposed merger with T-Mobile. And now that Sprint is engaging in a series of mergers of its own, first with Japanese wireless company Softbank (SFTBY) and then with longtime partner Clearwire (CLWR), AT&T has decided to complain loudly about its rival’s newfound love for industry consolidation. As The Hill reports, AT&T spokesman Brad Burns warned this week that “Softbank’s acquisition of Sprint and the control it gains over Clearwire will give one of Japan’s largest wireless companies control of significantly more U.S. wireless spectrum than any other company.” Burns went on to say that AT&T expected that Sprint’s newfound position of spectrum dominance “will be fully explored in the regulatory review process.”

That's just the way the media is spinning the story. For example, in the story you've quoted, they completely gloss over the last sentence, which completely contradicts their spin, as I pointed out in my post. It's less about Sprint/Softbank than it is about just getting the FCC to back off. I don't think AT&T cares either way whether or not the deal goes through. If it doesn't, then great; Sprint just gets weaker in comparison. If the deal does go through, then AT&T gets to rub it in the FCC's face the next time the FCC has a problem with AT&T's business practices. Either way, AT&T wins in some way.

  16. Not sure why I put merger was rushing... But I know I read somewhere that AT&T was gonna do whatever they could to object to the investment. Simply because sprint opposed the tmobile merger. And they want all the spectrum they can get ,even though they won't let customers do what they want with their data.

Are you referring to the press release that AT&T sent out a couple weeks ago? Because that didn't sound to me like AT&T opposed the investment at all. They just said that would make the wireless market more competitive. That sounds like AT&T are trying to build leverage for more mergers and spectrum acquisition. They were pointing out that if the Softbank/Sprint deal goes through, Sprint will still be able to compete effectively if AT&T wants to buy up any other carriers later on. I suggest reading the press release again, because AT&T used very precise wording in the last sentence to send this message to the FCC and tell them to back off on its regulations. They never once said anything that was actually negative about the Sprint/Softbank deal.

"Softbank's acquisition of Sprint and the control it gains over Clearwire will give one of Japan's largest wireless companies control of significantly more U.S. wireless spectrum than any other company. We expect that fact and others will be fully explored in the regulatory review process. This is one more example of a very dynamic and competitive U.S. wireless marketplace, which is an important fact for U.S. regulators to recognize."

  17. Haha, my family goes to Panama City Beach every year so they should both be upgraded around the same time. The market is called Gulf Coast and it should appear in the Deployment list soon...hopefully. :P

Cool. My parents own a townhouse in PCB, and I used to go with them for vacation every year. They've offered me opportunities to stay at the house, so it'll be good to know that I can get LTE if I decide to go back.

  18. Getting lte at my house! But the speeds are 2 down and 4 up.Will that get better? or is that all we will see?

Also in my house the signal gets bad.only 40 feet and 3 walls to my bedroom. There is signal in front of house, so can any one tell me if it will get better over time?I thought the signal in front would give me lte.it does but there is a brick wall for my outside wall. Will that make it impossible for me to even see lte in my house?

    Thank you for any help.

It really depends. If you are in a situation like mine where your LTE is from a tower that isn't actually the closest to you, and you're waiting for a closer tower to be upgraded, then yes, it will get better. If you're already getting your LTE from the closest tower, then they may adjust the tower's downtilt or something else that could make the signal stronger by your house, but it can't be guaranteed. If they don't adjust anything, then that's unfortunately the best you'll get.

FWIW, brick is probably pretty terrible for carrying a signal, then add several walls into the equation, and it's no surprise that the signal gets bad that deep into the house. Hopefully, you're just waiting on a closer tower to be upgraded, and you'll be golden. Since you're a sponsor already, just check out the NV Sites Complete map, and compare it to the NV Sites map to see if any towers in your area are awaiting an upgrade.

  19. Hey guys my GS3 only gets about 8 hours until I have to plug it in again. The other day I charged it all the way up, shut it off and unplugged it for the night, about 6 hours, when I started it up the next morning it only had 40% left on it after it had been off all night. I have only had the phone for about 3 weeks, what is wrong with it?

Go to Settings -> Apps, and view the list of All apps. Now, go through and select each bloatware app you find. In the App Info screen, press "Disable". Do this for every app you can't install and won't use (pretty much anything with "Samsung" in it, probably, especially Samsung Push). I'm using CM10 now, so I don't remember what I disabled on the stock ROM, but I disabled every bloatware app I could (there are two, I think, that you can't disable) and got way better battery life - like 6 extra hours, I think. Plus, my RAM usage went from 1GB+ to around 600/700MB.

  20. Yah...comparing the NV map vs. the COMPLETED NV map, there's still a bunch of towers that have yet to be touched.

I eyeballed 40-50 NV towers centered around the Schaumburg/EGV/Rolling Meadows area. There's only around half that amount of towers in the COMPLETED map of the same area.

Yeah, there are a bunch of gaps around here. I work in Addison, and I don't get any 4G between the Elgin-O'Hare and I355. Since I stream Google Music on my way to work, it's aggravating, especially since my phone prefers dropping to 1x instead of holding onto at least an EVDO signal when it's out of LTE range. Sometimes I don't get through even 3 songs because of buffering, and it's a twenty minute drive. There are two towers near me, one less than half a mile away, that are still in the process of being upgraded, both on my route to work. I'm so anxious for them to get finished. Now that I know exactly where one is, I'm almost compelled to stop by there on my way home from work every day just to check the progress.
