  1. You will probably be glad to hear that Sprint doesn't really care if your device is rooted. Sprint policy is to repair rooted phones just like non-rooted phones. Check out this article: http://www.acsyndicate.net/dear-sprint-thanks-for-the-memo/ They are not obligated to service a device with a custom ROM, though I have heard of people getting phones serviced with CyanogenMod installed and of Sprint reps who themselves used custom ROMs. YMMV, of course. Not all stores or reps are equal.
  2. I'm not sure why it's wrong for you, but mine shows an accurate signal. I get one bar of LTE in my driveway. When I'm on 3G, it fluctuates between one and two bars, and if it switches to 1x, I get 3 or even a full 4 bars. I know my LTE signal is accurate because my status under About Phone shows my LTE signal at -110dBm~-120dBm. I know that my 3G signal is accurate because on my EVO 4G, before Network Vision, I used to fluctuate between no bars/1x and one bar, occasionally up to 2. My current signal matches the ever-so-slight increase one would expect from Network Vision. When I'm in an area with a strong 3G signal, the bars fill up like they're supposed to. I've never had a problem with the signal reported on my phone.
  3. The handoff works fine now. It got fixed just before the 10.1 nightlies, so it works fine on any 4.2 AOSP ROM.
  4. Cyanogenmod shows accurate 3G signal. If it were showing you 1x, it would say "1x" next to the bars. CM shows all signals correctly.
  5. My S3 running CM10.1 was reporting both 4G and 2G/3G points until the latest Sensorly update. I mapped a trip recently, and it only mapped 4G, not 2G/3G.
  6. "Really, the truth is just a plain picture." -- Bob Dylan Well, at least the guy is OK. I'm sure this won't delay the upgrade for too long. They will probably take a day or two to double- and triple-check their safety precautions, but I'm sure the upgrades will resume by Monday at the latest.
  7. Maybe I missed it, but the last time I saw Chicago included in an announcement, it specifically said it was only for the suburbs, not the city. Does anyone have an official quote?
  8. I'm not sure why you're getting a delay in your speed tests. Those are instantaneous for me. However, I have noticed when web browsing, if I tap one of the links on my Chrome New Tab Page, there will be a good 2 or 3 second delay before the page starts loading, at which point it loads extremely quickly. I always just attributed it to Chrome. Your problems sound a little more extreme, though. It shouldn't take 10 seconds for the page to start loading, regardless of the browser. Does this happen over 3G, too, or only 4G?
  9. I was in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area at the Double Door last night. I got 4G a few blocks (south?) from the Double Door but not in the building. I'm not sure if it's a building penetration thing, because I forgot to check outside the building, but LTE is in Wicker Park, if not covering it. I searched the thread and only found a result from September, so I figured I'd post this in case anyone was wondering about that area. Oh, and I didn't get to map it on Sensorly because I needed my GPS also and do not own a car charger, so I couldn't risk the battery drain. Sorry about that.
  10. I'm using CM10 on my S3, and it's the smoothest, best phone experience I've ever had. Jellybean is amazing when it works well. If you're not the rooting/ROM-flashing type, have you tried disabling all the Samsung bloatware you don't use? When I first got my S3 and was still running TouchWiz, I disabled any and all Samsung apps I could, and the RAM availability and performance increased twofold.
  11. Interesting that no one figured this out yet with all the Sensorly devotees around, but I'll help you out. When you open Sensorly, go to the settings, and scroll down to General. Chances are you have both "Scan WiFi networks" and "Force WiFi on" checked. Just uncheck those, and all will be well.
  12. They are still rolling out 1xA on 800MHz. They are also rolling out LTE (not LTE Advanced, at least not initially) on the 800MHz spectrum. Whether or not they roll out LTE or LTE-Advanced doesn't matter so much, because Sprint is eventually upgrading all LTE to LTE-Advanced at the same time over all frequencies. Plus, the upgrade is a simple software upgrade, so it's not really a big deal.
  13. I think that's the part that's NV-related. I couldn't keep the 4G connection to save my life while nearby towers were being upgraded. Thing is, I had the same behavior on the stock Touchwiz ROM, except it held the 3G connection fine. It just didn't stay connected to 4G. So, it was no different for me on TW or CM except that CM wouldn't hold the 3G connection.
  14. I have CM10 on my S3, and LTE works fine on my phone in Schaumburg. I haven't been to the northern part of Schaumburg in a while, though, since I live in the southern part and work in Addison. FWIW, AOSP ROMs on the S3 have trouble keeping a 3G connection, so if you're not getting LTE, the data drops kind of frequently. If I'm not mistaken, there are a couple towers in the northern Schaumburg/HE area that are awaiting upgrades, and my phone had the hardest time keeping a 4G connection while nearby towers were being upgraded. It kept falling back to 3G, which meant CM10 would disconnect constantly. So, your problems are partly ROM-related, but also partly NV-related. Once the towers in those areas are completed, you should have no trouble holding a 4G connection on an AOSP ROM.
  15. Actually, you can change the DNS for all network activity. It just requires you to be rooted and that you add a few lines to the build.prop. http://aokp.co/?showtopic=113
  16. That's true, but if the duopoly is removed and balance is restored, then AT&T will be less restricted in future acquisitions. So they may lose ground in the beginning, but the level playing field works both ways. Yeah, they may have to try harder to compete and expand, but they're more likely to obtain the necessary resources to do so. Just about anything could happen for AT&T if the buyout goes through. They may lose their competitive advantage for good. They may stumble but regain traction. They may be able to swing future FCC decisions in their favor and gain ground not only on Sprint but on Verizon as well. AT&T knows this, as they said in their press release, "This is one more example of a very dynamic and competitive U.S. wireless marketplace, which is an important fact for U.S. regulators to recognize." I don't think AT&T are so much "scared" as they are anxious to see how this plays out and apprehensive of possible consequences. They are cautious but assessing their possible advantages in the situation. They could be planning to convince the FCC to redistribute (or whatever would happen) Clearwire spectrum in the wake of the buyout, especially if Clearwire or their spectrum becomes a major factor in the deal. I wouldn't it put anything past AT&T at this point. I'm sure AT&T can afford very clever attorneys should AT&T need them.
  17. Did that stuff stop working before or after the JB update? If it stopped working afterwards, then it may just be a part of the update. I know they changed something in the RIL, because MSLReader is no longer able to find the MSL number on JB-updated phones. Maybe this is related. I don't use the stock ROM, so I can't check if it works for me. Anyone else? I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with missing the "Force Stop" step of the directions.
  18. That's just the way the media is spinning the story. For example, in the story you've quoted, they completely gloss over the last sentence, which completely contradicts their spin, as I pointed out in my post. It's less about Sprint/Softbank than it is about just getting the FCC to back off. I don't think AT&T cares either way whether or not the deal goes through. If it doesn't, then great; Sprint just gets weaker in comparison. If the deal does go through, then AT&T gets to rub it in the FCC's face the next time the FCC has a problem with AT&T's business practices. Either way, AT&T wins in some way.
  19. Are you referring to the press release that AT&T sent out a couple weeks ago? Because that didn't sound to me like AT&T opposed the investment at all. They just said that would make the wireless market more competitive. That sounds like AT&T are trying to build leverage for more mergers and spectrum acquisition. They were pointing out that if the Softbank/Sprint deal goes through, Sprint will still be able to compete effectively if AT&T wants to buy up any other carriers later on. I suggest reading the press release again, because AT&T used very precise wording in the last sentence to send this message to the FCC and tell them to back off on its regulations. They never once said anything that was actually negative about the Sprint/Softbank deal. "Softbank's acquisition of Sprint and the control it gains over Clearwire will give one of Japan's largest wireless companies control of significantly more U.S. wireless spectrum than any other company. We expect that fact and others will be fully explored in the regulatory review process. This is one more example of a very dynamic and competitive U.S. wireless marketplace, which is an important fact for U.S. regulators to recognize."
  20. Cool. My parents own a townhouse in PCB, and I used to go with them for vacation every year. They've offered me opportunities to stay at the house, so it'll be good to know that I can get LTE if I decide to go back.
  21. It's LJ7. You can find leaks on XDA if you're interested in that sort of thing.
  22. It really depends. If you are in a situation like mine where your LTE is from a tower that isn't actually the closest to you, and you're waiting for a closer tower to be upgraded, then yes, it will get better. If you're already getting your LTE from the closest tower, then they may adjust the tower's downtilt or something else that could make the signal stronger by your house, but it can't be guaranteed. If they don't adjust anything, then that's unfortunately the best you'll get. FWIW, brick is probably pretty terrible for carrying a signal, then add several walls into the equation, and it's no surprise that the signal gets bad that deep into the house. Hopefully, you're just waiting on a closer tower to be upgraded, and you'll be golden. Since you're a sponsor already, just check out the NV Sites Complete map, and compare it to the NV Sites map to see if any towers in your area are awaiting an upgrade.
  23. Go to Settings -> Apps, and view the list of All apps. Now, go through and select each bloatware app you find. In the App Info screen, press "Disable". Do this for every app you can't install and won't use (pretty much anything with "Samsung" in it, probably, especially Samsung Push). I'm using CM10 now, so I don't remember what I disabled on the stock ROM, but I disabled every bloatware app I could (there are two, I think, that you can't disable) and got way better battery life - like 6 extra hours, I think. Plus, my RAM usage went from 1GB+ to around 600/700MB.
  24. Yeah, there are a bunch of gaps around here. I work in Addison, and I don't get any 4G between the Elgin-O'Hare and I355. Since I stream Google Music on my way to work, it's aggravating, especially since my phone prefers dropping to 1x instead of holding onto at least an EVDO signal when it's out of LTE range. Sometimes I don't get through even 3 songs because of buffering, and it's a twenty minute drive. There are two towers near me, one less than half a mile away, that are still in the process of being upgraded, both on my route to work. I'm so anxious for them to get finished. Now that I know exactly where one is, I'm almost compelled to stop by there on my way home from work every day just to check the progress.
