  1. Agree on subway tunnel service being a recent event, but the Lincoln has been covered for almost 20 years:  http://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/24/nyregion/lincoln-tunnel-going-cellular.html

    http://www.thefreelibrary.com/NYNEX+Customers+Offered+Cellular+Service+in+Lincoln+Tunnel%3B...-a016657777

It depends where in Midtown, and you can't talk about native service in the tunnels, up until recently, NO ONE had service in the tunnels.

It's tough, but we all know what is going on with the updates and such, it's up to the individual user to determine where they draw their line. For me, I'm not drawing it, I'm fine with the work, I know what it takes for the crews to get the work done, and if that means I can't check my Facebook, so be it, it can wait till I'm home.

  2. I thought it was a PRL update which forced my phone into the "o of death" (see my post here http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/3942-prl-250155601551097/page-3&do=findComment&comment=153732), but it was just a coincidence.

However, when traveling downtown and in midtown, I have the same results as you- the iphone spends too much time in "o"

As much as I want to root for the underdog in the fight, it's very challenging to have Sprint in NYC at the moment.  The LTE rollout is very slow; there is no native service in the tunnels (subway, MNR, LIRR,  or automobile), and the network is having significant growing pains as NV is rolled out.

Chicago is the best example of what Sprint in NYC will look like in 9-12 months time, and it sounds from the Chicago forum that things aren't great in the Loop there.

Just talk to Sprint... Tower down in lower Manhattan again... My phones been going from 3G to "o" and back and forth again. I really wish it's LTE that they are putting up. Others with iPhones notice this around the city? I had that issues while riding the 7 train too. Just connected to LTE than lose it to 3G to "o" and than 3G... LTE... 3G... "o"... lol

  3. digi, is there any reason why PRL 51097 would lead to more time spent on 1xrtt than 3g as compared to before?  Perhaps coincidence with some tower upgrades in NYC that is impacting this comparison, but after the PRL updated, I found myself with 1xrtt where before there was 3g.

    Thanks

  4. I think significant parts of the Upper West Side have lte but are unmapped on Sensorly. Anyone on the forums have an android device who can spend some time mapping there? I walked up Broadway from 66th to 76th with lte.

Also just received a brief period of lte on 50th and 7th this morning.

  5.

In all seriousness, though, why is your dad a Sprint sub in the first place? In my opinion, that is inappropriate. Please support Nex-Tech, the local carrier that actually built out the network in your dad's county. Or, if you must go with a national carrier, have your dad sign up with VZW or AT&T, which did nothing to build out the area but instead bought out Alltel and RCC Unicel.

This filing details the agreement between Sprint and Nextech to build out certain areas, and a subsequent lease and sale of 10 MHz of spectrum to Nextech. This agreement was considered material by Alamosa Holdings and is public:

  6. Here is a picture of the equipment at 28th Street on the 1 line. The other equipment in the stations I've visited look the same.

The MTA has been working with Transit Wireless to install wifi and cellular in the NYCT Subway system. From a press release:

Transit Wireless and the carriers are paying 100 percent of the cost of the project, estimated at up to $200 million, including the cost of NYC Transit forces that provide flagging, protection and other support services. The MTA and Transit Wireless would also evenly split revenues from occupancy fees paid by the wireless carriers and other sub-licensees of the network. Transit Wireless will pay the MTA a minimum annual compensation of $3.3 million once the full build out of the network is complete.

I curently get Wifi on many 1 train stations in Chelsea. 50th Street got connected last week. There is 3G data in some of the Chelsea A,C,E stations.

There are some plans posted online for Transit Wireless' "Base Station Hotel." http://transitwirele...uildersftp.com/

Also, both the MTA and California have significant outstanding debt, but California has more. A quick Google search can answer your questions like this.

  7. Sorry, my phone was acting stupid. I was saying that it carries more debt than the entire state of California. To have to do more construction underground would just make them lose more money.
