  1. I was missing the search button from my OG Evo as well. I just resorted to putting the search widget on my home screen as I found no other option. It's working well for me. I'm starting to use the voice search more since the button is right there on the widget. Almost makes me feel like I'm in a Siri commercial. Well, except for the phone talking back to me. And except for the part of looking really douchey having a conversation with me phone.

    LOL

Yeah I love the voice search also, the old evos would do it by just holding down the search button. I miss it. I'm just going to email and call HTC then.

    Thanks.

  2. Ok so long story short, a friend of mine joined the sprint crew this weekend she did want to pay $100-200 for a decent phone so I gave her my 3D and used her upgrade for to get my self this the new awesomeness :)

I am really loveing this phone... But how the heck do I do a quick search? Every android phone up to this point had a search button, and I used mine religiously. I saw on the galaxy nexus that if you hold down one of the 3 buttons at the bottom it would do it, but no such luck with the new EVO. Am I missing something? I know I can stick the search widget on the search widget on a home screen but its just the the same as having it there all the time.

Or is there a way to put the search bar at the top of the screen and have it there all the time like you can with the galaxy nexus?

    Thanks

    1) The ASL program was already in place previously. Sprint allows many more people with low credit classes service without high deposits up front. The ASL is a stop gap to allow those who otherwise couldn't afford post-paid service, the ability to have Sprint. Even with the ASL in place many were not paying their bills on time or in full. This is why it was implemented most likely. It also explains why if you sign up for autopay the $5 charge is waived. In addition with on time payments over time the ASL will be automatically removed from your account and thus no longer subject to the $5 charge.

2 and 3) are both directly related. I don't have any specific information on why this was implemented, but my assumption is it has to do with something behind the scenes. I highly doubt Sprint did it just to piss people off in exchange for a few more dollars each month. There is some other underlying reason we don't know for why this was put into place, and we likely will never know the real reason.

    4) Would you rather have data caps or throttling? Sprint is the last major carrier that can claim to have unlimited data and no worries about throttling your connection to a crawl. Sprint will want to hold onto that as long as possible as a differentiator.

    5) This likely is related to the fact that carriers lose money on every device sale at a discount. That money is made back up by your higher monthly cost compared to prepaid carriers. With the cost of new smartphones being so high, discounting those yearly is not sustainable, as evidenced by Sprint removing the program. It was a differentiator that could not be sustained and thus was done away with. Instead Sprint reduces the regular upgrade cycle by 2 months for ALL customers, not just those paying a premium. And who knows, if I were a conspiracy type I'd say it was due to Apple since it happened about the time the iPhone was released. All 3 major carriers with the iPhone have identical upgrade policies and iPhone pricing...

All good points but i was simply implying why I added in the price of the contract into the price of the phone and why someone might cancel after signing a new contract and making the justification that I would be better off to just buy it off craigslist then go through this contract buy up program.

However your post got me thinking. I mean, no matter what the reasons my bill is much higher and I have less features/perks to show for it. $75/month more is $1800 more throughout the life of a contract, and what gets under my skin is I didn't sign up for that. :-(

    Also...

    1) ASL was put into place even if you already paid your deposit and had been with sprint for years. but today a new 18 year old with fresh/no credit gets charged a deposit and ASL and also a late fee if he pays late. I might be wrong, but it just feels like they're charging 3 times for the samething.

    2) changed because sprint changed its policy/agreement with all the employers

    3) when this took place I called sprint and was told, the FP was going to be dropped to $110, but I checked a few days ago and the family plan prices are still the same so I need to call them say WTF because my bill went up.

    4) I would have rather been grandfathered into not paying it.

    5) I know why they did it, but all im saying is that was a pretty awesome perk that people loved, Sprint advertised and marketed it as well. So many people where very upset when it went away.

I obviously have done the good sprint fanboy thing and given them the benefit of a doubt (as I'm still here) on most of these issues, but it has gotten to the point where I can't help but wonder when the next price increase will be and why.

Anyway back to topic, I thought I saw last year a compare list of the top 4 carriers plans and it determined that Sprint was the best money wise and data wise. Verizon if I am not mistaken came in 3rd. but this is all before LTE.

    TS

Yeah Verizon has always had bad prices and I think this only adds to it.

Although you may have something with the most technical interpretation of the word "hypocrite", no one in your position who also breaks the rules has any moral standing to call someone a hypocrite on the issue. And that, of course, is my opinion.

    Robert

Yes, however im not criticizing him for braking the rules im criticizing him for criticizing me for braking the rules

  6. *sigh*

I am tiring of this argument. "Guards, send in the jesters and have them perform something humorous for my amusement." *clap, clap*

AJ, is not being a hypocrite (notice the correct spelling). He has repeatedly made the point that people who grossly abuse tethering are ruining the experience for the masses. Because the network is a shared resource.

    Robert

With all the respect, I don't agree with you bro, if anyone violates their contract and tries to shame someone else for the samething. thats a hypocrite (id also like to blame any mistakes on Swift X's predict text)

So with that said yeah Verizon totally sucks and there new plans do to.

  7.

I don't agree with that at all.

You already pay for the data, you should be able to use it how you want.

Tethering fees are a completely unethical double-dip and a symptom of just how weak the competition between the different carriers

I and 1000's of Rooted users couldn't agree more :-)

I thought it was pretty straight forward. I don't condone tethering unless you pay for it. Using tethering sparingly is also stealing.

Really, straight forward? because if you don't condone tethering unless you pay for it then why do you agree with AJ at all? his argument is its OK as long as it's sparingly

  9.

    Try an analogy, Juan.

If I drive 3 MPH over the speed limit, am I engaging in "hate and hypocrisy" when I get angry at the driver who swerves around me at 25 MPH over the speed limit?

Speeding is against the law, bar none, but you cannot conflate driving 3 MPH over the speed limit with speeding with reckless abandon. The same goes for tethering.

For example, I tether only as needed, possibly 10 times per year. Furthermore, over the past 12 months, I averaged 350 MB of 1X/EV-DO/WiMAX data usage (including any tethering) per month. I am not the problem.

If you cannot understand that, then you have no reasoned argument.

    AJ

Ok Hmmm... the speed limit analogy is odd because we're talking about something that's unlimited and trying to fit it into a limited MPH scenario. im working with fractal here!... but ill try to "understand" and just go with it.

There's just so many real life variables to your analogy we could be 15 post into this and still not agree. So AJ I'm going to just ask you this, at going over 3mph are you or are you not braking the law? Certainly the 25mph is braking it, but are you? Getting upset at someone and criticizing them for the samething you do is just hypocritical. for this, I call you a hypocrit.

look at it kinda like a legitimate criticism and not an attack :-)

Question: if you steal some shoes from walmart, but get mad because someone else stole a TV what does that make you? and are they or are they not both the same?

and as for your example. I tether about the same as you, (mainly because the network in vegas is so slow, and there's wifi everywhere I go) but the difference is I won't criticize someone else for doing it more or less because im doing it also. If you can't understand that then we are just going to have to agree to disagree.

  10. Well guys, here's my recap of tonight's event:

Long story, short. I’m sold. Very glad I pre-ordered.

    Positive impressions:

    Appearance

The phone feels great in the hand. Yes, it is made of plastic, but it doesn’t feel cheap or creaky. White looked great. Unfortunately, there were no blue versions available at all…and there were dozens of GS3’s in the room. A couple of reps I spoke to said they were planning to buy the blue for themselves. That textured/grain looked great in the demo videos and press materials found throughout the venue. Large phone. Very large screen. But it is extremely comfortable to hold and navigate. I have zero reservations about the size and I do not have large hands either.

    Display

Speaking of the screen, it looks beautiful. Especially in dimly lit room tonight. I didn’t think the colors looked garishly oversaturated. Blacks look as great as we’ve come to expect from Samsung phones. I know that many people have complained about sub-pixels and screen quality, but to my untrained eyes, Super AMOLED HD was stunning.

    Button Layout

The fact that the power button is on the right side makes way more sense on these big phones than having it located at the top of the phone (like the HTC One X or Evo). Very easy to activate.

    Camera

Burst shot (8 to 20 photos) and best shot worked well. Face tracking was quick too. Taking pictures while recording a video is also a nice plus. Pinch to zoom or use the volume rocker. Front facing camera quality was much improved over my OG Evo and Nexus S.

    Software

Using S Beam (Samsung’s customized NFC & Wifi Direct implementation) worked as expected. Files, including videos and photos, transferred surprisingly quickly. Just make sure that the phone is unlocked first. One rep mentioned that this will work with other NFC enabled phones, such as the Galaxy Nexus, but I’m skeptical.

Their demo of screen sharing / collaboration was kind of neat, though they only used an image as an example. Basically, one SGS3 had an image on its screen and a bunch of other phones were set up with access to it. You could write on the image, highlight words, etc. Apparently this will work with other types of files such as Word docs.

    Accessories

The accessories they demoed looked great. That includes the media link stuff (picture quality on the displays was surprisingly good) and the cases. As you may have seen elsewhere, Samsung is selling a flip cover case. I may just pick one up. Hard cover over the screen without the bulk. We’ll see.

    Negative Impressions:

    Button Layout

The two capacitive keys are reversed in my opinion. Back is on the right and menu is on the left.

    Software

Siri… I mean S-Voice, got in the way of a couple demos I saw, but I think that was user error more than anything. The rep got stuck on a menu and kept double tapping the menu button instead of hitting back or tapping the home button once.

    Call Quality

The rep I asked about HD voice tried to work some marketing mumbo jumbo on me. It went something like this, “The Evo’s HD voice is a gimmick. It’s an unproven technology. Requires network upgrades that aren’t even available. Even the term, HD, is inaccurate. Samsung will be sure to look into it at a later date, but for now, it’s not something to be concerned about.” He asked me what I’d even need something like that for? Have I ever had issues with voice quality on a modern smart phone? To which I responded, “Yes, nearly every windy day when I’m walking outside or if I’m out at a bar and there’s loud music playing.” I told him that was the way HTC and Sprint had demoed HD voice in NYC. At that point he took out a notepad and jotted some of my words down. If HD voice comes out on the SGS4…you’ll know who to thank!

    Miscellaneous

Lastly, and unrelated to the phone, prizes were given out at the end of the night based on points you collected from the various reps at different stations (S Beam, Burst shot, NFC “memory” game, etc.) as well as contests. It was kind of a rat race and stopped being fun after I noticed people cheating. I’m sorry, but if you’re a cute girl and just walk around asking reps for points and DO NOTHING FOR IT, that’s a little ridiculous. Or, if you’re in a group of people and decide to pool your points (have only one person in your group collect the points for everyone)…shady! Or if you cheat at musical chairs (yes, I’m talking about you man) by physically pushing people out of the way and blocking one chair at all times…that’s wrong. Yes…I’m hating the player, not hating the game.

On the other hand, girl that won the dance off, you deserved it. Way to shake what your mama gave you. Oh, and way to bring back the running man. You nailed it.

Thanks for all the info, looking at this to be the next phone.

You know that there is a reason that Sprint has a tethering option that you can add on to your plan. Unauthorized tethering adds extra stress to the (already stressed) network and everyone else suffers. Tethering is not free while abiding by the terms and conditions of your contract.

On another note, "hate and hypocrisy"? I think AJ is correct in saying that "shame" on anyone taking advantage of extensive tethering. Not only is it stealing from Sprint, as you are only paying for data on the device that is currently connected to the network, but it is a detriment to all the other users trying to use the network.

ALSO, all these hacked tether apps opening the doors for people to access services that users are required to pay for could easily push lawmakers to make rooting/jailbreaking illegal again.

ok im having trouble finding what side of this you are on, on hand you post " Tethering is not free while abiding by the terms and conditions of your contract." then you post "AJ is correct in saying that (shame) on anyone taking advantage of extensive tethering." LMAO! and then you go as far as call extensive use stealing.

So what, using it sparingly isn't? if your going to agree that it's ok to brake the rules a little. then you have no right to use them as a sword on someone who might be braking them alot... basicly don't try and talk rules to me if you don't follow them your damn self. At witch point I stand buy my "hate and hypocrisy" statement only now it's also aimed at you!!!

  12.

The sentiment of AJ's post is spot on. We all should only tether sparingly on the new Network or Sprint is going to shut us all down. You can mark that down.

Robert via Galaxy Nexus using Forum Runner

The sentiment of AJ's post was an attack, but i do agree with everyone using the new network only as needed but we all know there are going to be tons of people who will cancel there home internet and use there phone as a modem. I don't like it, but it is what it is bro, get ready to say good bye to unlimited or hello to some kind of major throttling policy.

Sent from my Evo 3D using Tapatalk

  13.

And doing so is a violation of the Ts and Cs to which you agreed. Now, that said, many of us do so sparingly. But if you do so extensively, then I will be blunt: shame on you. You are taking unfair advantage of Sprint's unlimited data offering, and you are adding to the data network congestion for the rest of us. This is a downside to so called unlimited data -- it can invite abuse.

    AJ

LMFAO! So much hate and hypocrisy from this post, you know damn well you do the samething. but it's ok so long as it's sparingly... get outta here with that BS! come on man, for reals, really? really? lol sprints 3G speeds are so bad that sparingly is the only way to use it... atleast in my area (Las Vegas) anyway.

Shame on me? ok daddy! I'll go to my room with out supper :-(

Sent from my Evo 3D using Tapatalk

  14. Again, why would you basically buy out your contract, then sign a new contract if you were planning on canceling your contract? That would be the only way you pay 825. If your plan was to leave sprint, it would be smarter to just pay your ETF and leave.

This is for customers who are happy with their service, and want a new phone, but do not want to pay 600+ for it. If they change their device every year, then they would only be paying 425 compared to 550-650.

I do agree that the CL or buying out right would probably be a better option, because it would not extend your contract.

Chad I don't know how long you have been with sprint but im going on 10+ years, im not saying I'm unhappy with the service, I have a family plan with 5 lines on it... BUT, in my time with sprint I would be living if i didn't say there wasn't a few snugs in the road where I was ready to drop sprint completely, Sprint "today" is a pretty good carrier but us old timers can't help but remember of the old sprint (mainly because it wasn't that long ago) that sprint had the worst customer service in the industry and i would always see hick ups on my bill with little help from sprint to deal with it. So excuse me if the way I add things up in my head doesn't makes sense to you, but to me if there a possibility I could pay it then I add in for good measure and if in the future I don't end up paying it then that's just more money in my pocket.

you keep on with why would anyone buy there upgrade and then cancel, and the answer is because you don't know what's going to happen tomarrow, next week, month and even 2 years from now. that's along time sprint can very well change things to upset (maybe not you) but plenty of others

let me remind you of some of the changes sprint has made with in that last 24 months that caused some people to get upset and some to cancel

    1) ASL: account spending limit, this was added to the lines with not so great credit it was and still is a $5 tax every month because you "might" pay your bill late... not to mention if you do pay your bill late you will also get a late fee.

    2) EVP: the Employees Value Program discount changed (this one effected me) before you got your EVP on all the lines in your family plan then one day it changed and you could only get the discount on the initial cost of the plan this costed me an extra $15 a month

    3) FP: the family plan changed again. sprint droped it to only $110/month but no longer included the second line. those of us with EVP, our bills went up again. Mine $5

    4) PD: Primum Data, it wasn't that long ago that sprint didn't have an extra tax on unlimited data but today they do. every smartphone gets a extra $10 charge every month... my bill went up $50

    5) No more upgrades every year :-(

Now I know there was others and i can remember off the top of my head but these are some that affected me. If you add them up 50+5+15+5= $75 extra a month I am paying for the same service I got when I first signed this contract im curectly in.

I'm not complaining because it's still cheaper then other carries, but am I weary of sprint and there back door policies (you bet!) and more importantly am I going to look at the $375 cancellation fee and add it into the price of the phone just in case... you bet ya!

Sent from my Evo 3D using Tapatalk

  15. The ETF for smartphones is 350. Also, if you are planning on leaving sprint, why would you buy a new device that will probably only work on their service.

well then that could put you as much as $825 in the hole. I would just get my phone from CL at that point.

Sent from my Evo 3D using Tapatalk

  16.

Do you mean $275 early buy up + $200 for the new contract = $475? Because there is no buy up involved if you cancel the line. All a buy up would be is, you'd pay to move up your upgrade. Which essentially plays out like, "Oh no! I just bought this crappy Iphone a month ago, and this sweet Galaxy S 3 is coming out in two weeks! *sells Iphone, does 'UPGRADENOW' buys new phone*

If you're switching phones that quick anyway, and the value of your phone hasn't dropped... you're breaking even if you do it right. All this program is doing is enabling you to pay off the subsidy of the previous phone so you can reup with new subsidy.

atleast that's what it looks like to me....

no I was talking about, you have to spend $275 to buy up, plus $200 for the new phone you're buying (new contract price) and now your in another 2 year contract witch would be another $200 to get out of if you wanted to. that equals $675. I would just assume buy the phone off craigslist at that point and I won't be in contract
