  1. livetaswim, you can be our guinea pig for next week. :) I was driving through Hwy 74 where it meets 7, near Gastonia and got no LTE through there, even though it's marked on Sensorly. I wonder if my EVO just didn't switch over in time or if the tower was off. I wonder what area they're working on now...

What is your radio version? The one starting with a 3 has worked better for me

  2. I got another 2 miles of LTE mapped from the 77/85 junction down 85 towards Billy Graham. One speed test was 19.1 down / 5.9 up at about mile marker 36-37 and another test was 20.5 down and 6.3 up at the 77/85 junction!

    Woot!

  3. Apologies for the previous negativity. Also, has anyone been able to get 4G at 77/85? I want to make sure it isn't my phone. My EVO LTE's radio was updated with Jelly Bean and I am optimistic that it is better. But in my incessant tinkering I may have messed something up.

  4. I decided to change my data connection to LTE only for my trip from Texas to Kansas. That way I should not have to toggle to get LTE to connect since there would not be a CDMA connection alrady established connection to change when LTE was available.

Well guess what? LTE still would not connect even though the iPhone had and LTE connection.

    1. I connected once in Wichita Falls but soon lost it and never connected again there even though the iPhone maintained an LTE connection while in Wichita Falls.

    2. iPhone connected at the south Kansas border, Evo finally connected after toggling.

    3. Evo never connected in Wichita KS, iPhone always connected

    4. Automatically connected from Andover, KS to El Dorado, KS

    5. Finally automatically connected in Overland Park.

I cleared the LTE file so I could log all connections on the trip. No connections were logged until I set the connection to LTE/CDMA/EVDO auto when I got home.

Note: When connected LTE, there were not NID or BID info in netmontior when LTE only selected.

I discovered a different way to get "LTE only"

    First, you dial *#*#4636#*#*

Then you scroll down a tiny bit and there is a little triangle on the right. If you press that, you get a list of options. If you select the bottom option "LTE, CDMA" you will connect to 4G without any problems. If no 4G is available, then you will revert to a 1X connection. This trick worked great for me when I was mapping 4G in my area. There are some downsides. For example, you can't get 3G. Also, I didn't have any luck staying connected to 4G for long. YMMV

To change back you do the same thing and select "CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto"

  5. i just mapped a TON of new LTE sites on Sensorly around my office tonight !! I drove around for over 20 minutes and never could find the end of coverage, they had to of lit up 5-6 towers today. Its all over the I-77/ I-485 area, Westinhouse Blvd, S.Tryon ... My office is completely surrounded with LTE now !! woohoo !!!

That just made my day :-)

  6. I ride on 85S and take the connection to 77N to get to work in the morning, and looking on Sensorly app on my iPhone I thought I was supposed to be passing through an area with 4g coverage a few exits before and after the connection. Maybe in the next few weeks, or has anybody else been able to pick up LTE in that area lately?

Didn't see it yesterday or Sunday

  7. The tower on Albemarle road in Charlotte is back to broadcasting 4G as well. I had just checked 2 days ago and it was still 3g. Maybe this is a sign of good things?

Usually the 3g downtown is pretty good (as of only a couple of months ago) but this morning I cannot even stream Spotify on low quality. So ready for 4g!

I hear ya. Well a while back I got 4G in the BOA corporate center. I'm guessing there is something in place and hopefully it will light up soon

  8. Thanks Robert. That helps make sense of it to a degree. I just assumed it was a market that they could knock out relatively quickly, given that it isn't that large, but also not terribly small. I guess I just assumed they would slowly pick up the pace if anything. Just not go backwards lol.

I believe this market includes Asheville too

  9.

Hokay so... I have to drive all over the place today - Kannapolis to basically a mile away from Carowinds for one holiday stop, then take 485 all the way around to 24/27 & out to Locust for the wife's holiday stop. Basically, I'll have her drive so I'm not a menace on the roads while I'm mapping Sensorly, doing speed tests, and toggling airplane mode on the EVO around the areas we know have 4G . I'll see if there's any expanded coverage around 85, 77, then start checking again once I hit the Hwy 51 exit and around Ballantyne, as well as other areas, and report back. If there are any new coverage areas on 85/77, they'll be mapped on Sensorly before 2pm and 485 & 24/27 will be mapped by 5:30pm. :)

    Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! :tu:

I'll be mapping from here to Boone today on my 4G troubled evo

  10. Following up on my previous post...

Before starting my bus ride home, I used the *#*#4636#*#* method to switch my phone to LTE CDMA only. There is good news and bad news. The good news is that it switched from 1X to 4G on its own. The bad news is that it wouldn't hold on to the 4G signal. It kept going back and forth between the two and I would say the longest that it was just on 4G was around 30 seconds. I also called Sprint today to see if I could find anything out about the EVO's problem. I was told that 1) the 4G problem is a known issue 2) they are already rolling out Jelly Bean to select EVO LTE devices. My sense of things is that the sprint person was giving me accurate and up-to-date information. We'll find out in the next day or two.

  11. Robert (site admin) did some testing when he went to Waco a while back and found the EVO LTE didn't connect as well as other phones.

I've been doing some research and this is a known issue with the evo. I will let everyone know if I find a workaround

Update: I found this on xda:

You can use the dialer codes to change a mode to force LTE.

    *#*#4636#*#*

    or

    ##3282# (Requires MSL)

In there you can change the preferred network type to LTE CDMA only and that will force LTE for you. It will hold the LTE connection for much longer. If you happen to fall out of LTE, you'll be on 1X. Just switch back to the orignal setting and you'll be on 3G.

This is a work around for now. HTC/Sprint will need to resolve the issue.

The obvious flaw is that you can't get 3g while in LTE CDMA only mode. I tried it at my work uptown and I didn't detect a 4G signal, which confirms what I already knew. I will be trying it on my busride home to see what happens at the 85/77 spot. Now that I know it's a problem with my phone, I want to storm into sprint and throw a tantrum and get them to let me upgrade to the Optimus G. But I will wait until 4G is available at my office and see if HTC can get a fix out there. I'm not holding my breath though.

  12. Funny you mention toggling, because just like others on this forum my EVO4G LTE will not switch to the strong 4g signal 14mbps in kings mountain without toggling airplane mode. Ill be doing my darndest during a vacation this weekend in atlanta to get it switched out for a gs3. not sure if there would be on this specifc thread, but are there any success stories in doing so?

The only flaw in this strategy is that you will be stuck with a GS3. What about the Optimus? Does anyone here have one?
