  1. Man this sucks, statistics can be dangerous though. If they have twice as much work this year than last and the accident rate is twice as high, is it actually worse or just more of the same? That isn't to say they shouldn't work in improving safety but it would be interesting to see the statistics based on person hours worked as the press often has an interesting way of presenting facts to their advantage.

I'd love NV to come quicker but never at the expense of someones life.

I worked for a while as a manager for a contractor on the railways, doing a massive upgrade to high speed track. It was a constant battle to keep on top of safety but far better that then having to call a spouse. Prior to that I worked in the petrochem industry and they had an induction video everyone had to watch prior to being allowed on site, I can still clearly remember some of the scenes from industrial accidents. People were literally being sick watching it, but by and large it did work for most people. For the time I was there they had a perfect safety record, nothing beyond a skinned knuckle which isn't bad. There was also a strong culture of identifying potential issues and getting them resolved without any fear of recrimination. Unfortunately the concept wasn't popular elsewhere.

Love the concept of a speed bonus, we also used to have a safety board showing man hours worked since the last accident, felt very good to see that in the millions and no one ever wanted to see it reset to zero. I guess it's part of creating that culture.

  2. The New AT&T Galaxy S4 Active - Waterproof*

*Waterproof doesn't mean water won't get into the phone, just that it can be placed nearby water without peril.

Exactly how this works varies phone to phone but basically it's a scale from can be used in the rain a bit to can be submerged \ go swimming with it (but not for long). None of them are truly waterproof in the sense that my camera in an underwater housing is, but more like the normal waterproof cameras where you just not have to worry about rain and humidity.

Personally I welcome it, it always looked rather stupid at a wedding trying to protect my phone but not having to worry about my cameras (I used to use gps & maps to track second shooters, bridal party etc on larger shoots). It's something that should make it's way onto most premium phones if not all smart phones. I don't expect them to go diving but being able to withstand rain (well 'mist' if you are Hawaiian ;) ) for a couple of hours would be nice.

I am looking forward to the gn3, Ihope they don't screw it up. For me (and I realise I am probably in a minority) it's pretty much going to be the phone closest to my needs. I am just hoping it gets lte A, if they are using the snapdragon 800 and rf360 chip then I will be greatly displeased if they leave out lte a just so they can sell another variant 4 months later (that's what fancy new coloured shells are for right?). Sprint just needs to hurry up and get NV built out here. I got so sick of companies releasing potentially great phones but hampering them with a fixed battery, no sd slot etc. I know for others it might not matter, but my money my choice right :) Would be great ifthey released it with a QHD 6 inch screen purely for the improvement in viewing pictures. 4k is a while off, maybe 2-4 years, iirc the smallest commercially available 4k (well UHD which != 4k) is 10 inches on a field monitor, only a matter of time before it's on a tablet, maybe a year or so.

  3. ok I have a potential newb question. What 'frequency latitude' do cell phone antenna have? The reason I ask is I am curious with the advent of the qualcomm rf360 what the potential is for 'flashing' a sprint phone with that front end chip to say a verizon or the other way. In theory the chip would support it, but how close would the frequencies need to be assuming it could be tricked into switching. I assume the presence of three antenna (in addition to BT \ wifi etc) for cell service relates to the bands meaning the antenna have some limits or just to allow multiple transmissions at once. I could be entirely wrong as well!!

I do miss the good old days with quad band phones that you could pretty much get on ans gsm network in the world and a few 'worldphones' that could do virtually any network.

And sadly I do remember 5 1/4 inch floppies (they were actually floppy unlike the 3 1/2 inchers), I also used reel to reel tape drives which had somewhere around 120mb of capacity, although thats less to do with my age and more to do with the tightness of my employer at the time :) They did have a wolfcreek though, that was a shiny toy and amusing to watch at full speed.
