  1. Gone are the days of annual upgrades and calling customer care to get a ton of freebies.

It's amazing how much Sprint has changed over the past two years.

I remember reading non-stop about stacking corp discounts on SERO, 24 off per month, free early upgrades...

On one side, I am glad they are being more equitable... but last year my account was flagged for an early upgrade for no reason... so I am sad to see that go.

  2. Considering that the LTEvo uses Samsung sensors for both cameras, I can't wait to see blogosphere comparisons. /sarcasm

Almost a certainly that the Sprint version of the SGS3 will be getting the S4.

    Like the LTEvo.

Not much differentiating the two phones as far as performance, other than how they'll each do on radios.

I wouldn't draw such comparisons between the two cameras. The f/* alone is a huge difference - image processing aside.

For the average user, it probably won't mater though. Both are modern BSI cameras that will perform well for day-to-day use.

It's SAMOLED + removable battery vs. "infinity display" + non-removable battery + slightly better camera

The radios should be interesting to compare.

The rest is all brand preference/software preference.

  3. That dropbox link is from the GNex BTW...

I'm still in shock they went with the pebtile display even after the wrap it got and knowing there are better things in market at current time...

f/2.6 lens....didn't realize they were whipping HTC camera wise with a worse lens aperture all these years...

Deff a solid phone here but think they missed a big opportunity to stomp everyone Jo question if just changed the display...cost I guess got too high?

Do like the software updates they made though. Some nice features there.

I really think the whole PenTile thing is way overblown. This is not the same PenTile that was on the Nexus S and Moto phones.

The photos really aren't what you would experience in-hand. Like I said, the GNex in-hand is very nice (other than a papery look to it) which is supposedly gone with the GS3.

PenTile on the GS3 is a non-issue in my humble opinion :) - PPI is just too high.

  4. WEAK.....the fact that they went with the pentile screen instead of the plus is a huge mistake imho....coulda hit a homerun here with the amoled hd plus instead of the same nexus screen type basically...

    galaxy-s-iii-microscope-one-x.jpg

And from the Nexus...notice FASTBOOT in the image...

    http://dl.dropbox.co...00/IMAG0203.jpg

Would of liked to see them attack HTC's camera claims some and upgrade theirs too, but the only thing they hit on seems to be software related with the camera...

Pentile got a REALLY bad wrap from the original nexus s and some moto displays (like on the Photon). I used both those phones and couldn't complain more about the garbage pentile.

Pentile was HORRIBLE on both of those. Pentile on my GNEX is actually pretty nice. It has a little bit of a "papery" grain to it, but is actually very sharp. The pixel density is so high, there is no way you can actually pick out the pixels. Supposedly, the "papery" grain is actually gone with the newest panel in the GS3... so I don't see any reason to dog on this display.

They have also fixed the whites. The GNEX display vs. the GS2 display is a HUGE upgrade, pentile and all!

As for the camera... anandtech did confirm while it is a new BSI sensor, it isn't a f/2.0 like the HTC camera... it is f/2.6.

If they end up being powered by the same SoC in the US market, it's going to come down to two things:

    1) How badly do you need a removable battery

    2) SAMOLED or HTC "infinity" display?

I think HTC won this round, Samsung won last round.

    The rest is fairly subjective.

    Gotta love competition.

  5. Samsung has really won me over the last year, so they would have to have some MAJOR steps backward to lose me.

Ah, so that's what loyalty feels like :)

I love jumping around from phone to phone.

I am only loyal to Sprint, heh.

  6. Samsung has really won me over the last year, so they would have to have some MAJOR steps backward to lose me.

I thought the HTC One camera was getting bad reviews?

I would have to compare displays to be sure, but I read that dark colors don't do so well in the HTC display. GNex is all I am familiar with and compared to the E4GT, the GNex display wins, pentile screen and all.

Where were you reading bad reviews on the camera?

Dark colors on Sammy's Super AMOLED are absolutely black because there is no backlight like on a traditional LCD. That being said, for blacks, the HTC does very well.

HTC hasn't had me this excited in a while. It sounds like samsung sort of left the 8MP camera from the GS2 alone and just tossed it into the GS3. There was zero mention of camera improvements - which is scary.

    Objective camera review:

    http://www.anandtech...or-att-review/5

Then there's the camera. Once again, HTC is able to deliver one of the best if not the best smartphone camera with the One X. Low light performance in particularly impressive. The new Sense camera UI is a great match for the hardware as well. The ability to take photos while recording a video without a costly mode switch is both innovative and incredibly useful.

    Objective screen analysis:

    http://www.anandtech...or-att-review/6

The 720p Infinity Screen has the best contrast ratio of any smartphone we've tested, and is among the brightest we've used as well. There's no PenTile to worry about, it's simply one of the best displays if not the best we've reviewed in a phone.

As for touchwizzzzz vs. sense - I prefer sense, but that's just user preference.

I still can't get over how similar the GS3 and the One look.

At any rate - this time around I will be using the HTC EVO 4G LTE unless Moto pulls a magic trick out of its hat.

  7. Leave it to you guys to try to precipitate on my parade. I don't care what you techy types say. I am liking what I'm seeing so far. My Gadget Wood is rarely wrong. Ok, maybe not rarely but most of the time it's spot on. Mostly...

Haha. It looks ok don't get me wrong... but it is VERY similar looking to the new HTC One series.

I don't see all the excitement. The quad core is nice... but dual core SoCs are now fast enough to surf the web smoothly now. I bet the phone is blazing fast but it is still A9 based, not A15.

A15 and Intel are the game changers.

Battery life should continue to improve.

  8. Here is the quote in that article:

It is still speculation at this point. I'll hold my disappointment until it is confirmed.

Qualcomm needs to stop hogging all the LTE capability...

Well, samsung actually makes their own LTE chip (it's in the GNEX). I don't know why samsung can't move that process down to 32nm or just integrate it into their Exynos quadcore SoC.

Qualcomm is just killing it lately.

  9. Was this confirmed? All I have seen is quad core in all the releases.

Which phone are you leaning towards? EVO 4G LTE or GS3?

The better camera (with dedicated camera button!), kickstand, and the display that is getting absolutely rave reviews has swayed me towards the EVO 4G LTE. The non-removable batter is a little bit of a bummer... but I rarely take the battery out nowadays. With OG EVO I would travel with a few spares... but that's not the case anymore.

The Pentile display ont he GNEX doesnt bother me... but I'd really like to check out all the buzz is about on HTC's new displays. Supposedly they are "the best".

I suppose if you were really in a pinch you could just use a portable USB charger (they are cheap).

  10. Considering that LTE variants will be running the Qualcomm MSM8960 (same chip that is in the EVO 4G LTE)... I am not really all that excited.

I suppose if you wanted the EVO 4G LTE but couldn't live without the removable battery - this will be your ticket.

  11. Simple, FDD LTE uses less bandwidth and provides nearly the same capabilities. To me, that's a good thing.

ok ok AJ, I'll attempt - this is my theory

It's really MIMO that is boosting the spectral efficiency. Cable is using QAM 256 to boost efficiency.

    4x4 MIMO + QAM 64 is more efficient than cable's QAM 256

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIMO

  12. I don't have a Femtocell because I live 250' from a Sprint site. However, my buddy does, and no one in his house uses data on it, because of WiFi. Only guests who happen to be Sprint customers use the data on it. Which is pretty much just me and my wife.

If he had LTE, he would still use WiFi for data on his devices. And since he has 6Mbps DSL, his LTE wouldn't be faster than that anyway. It would just be for my use basically when I come over with a LTE device.

Now commercial femtocells is a whole different animal. It will be great when they start supporting LTE.

Robert via NOVO7PALADIN Tablet using Forum Runner

femtocell w/ LTE @ home will be for people too lazy (or stupid) to turn on wifi, heh.

  13. I'm not a radio antenna engineer. I'm just telling you what I've read.

    http://www.pcmag.com...,2400875,00.asp

    That's actually pretty cool.

If an existing LTE carrier signs up with Clearwire, its phones will be able to do soft handoffs, flipping between the two LTE networks without breaking a call or dropping a connection, Saw said.

That's very awesome to hear they can soft hand-off between FD-LTE and TD-LTE. I think 4ringsnbr was saying that couldn't be done due to different gateways, etc.

  14. Windstream DSL here. I have the maximum plan offered. 12Mbps down and 600kbps up.

The best results ever: 12.9Mbps down and 760kbps up.

Robert - Posted from my E4GT with ICS using Forum Runner

Did you see the battery results on the new qualcomm 28nm?

    Holy heck!

    46093.png

Goes toe to toe with the MAXX which has a battery that's almost double the size!

    46098.png

    From anandtech review:

Now that we have 28nm baseband we've immediately realized some power gains. As time progresses, the rest of the RF chain will also get better, already most of the LTE power amplifiers vendors have newer generation parts with higher PAE (Power-Added Efficiency), such improvements will hopefully continue to improve things and gradually bring LTE battery life closer to that of 3G WCDMA or EVDO.

  15. My parents have Cox. They pay for the 12mbps plan (preffered?) but we actually get 25~30mbps.

That's probably the "powerboost" kicking in.

First 50MB or so (enough for a speedtest) are essentially uncapped.

All this cable talk reminds me that cable companies went through the same evolution. They wanted to offer speeds so they started aggregating (bonding) channels. Kind of funny when you think about it.

    Downstream Bonding Channel Value

    Channel ID 235 233 234 236

    Frequency 703750000 Hz 691750000 Hz 697750000 Hz 709750000 Hz

Signal to Noise Ratio 38 dB 37 dB 38 dB 38 dB

    Downstream Modulation QAM256 QAM256 QAM256 QAM256

Power Level 2 dBmV 2 dBmV 3 dBmV 2 dBmV

I can powerboost over 50mbit and always get above 25mbit. My speeds are capped at about 28mbit.

    1927539405.png

Obviously, I am powerboosting to get this speedtest result.

  16. Thanks! I won't have my GNex for a few weeks still. So I'm giving advice blindly!

    Robert

Well I don't know how to get into the debug menu anyway... it's locked with something other than the MSL.

This same thing happened to me when I was on the GS2 and upgraded to ICS - nobody seems to know why the MSL doesn't work anymore.

  17. Try your Debug screen the next time when you are cycling through LTE. You get there by pressing ##DEBUG# in your phone dialer. In a LTE device, they may not even have a LTE section in the DEBUG menu. I don't know. But it's worth checking out.

    Robert

on the galaxy nexus it is *#*#DEBUG#*#*

The strange thing is, the MSL wont unlock it

*#*#DATA#*#* still works with MSL though.

  18. You raise an interesting conundrum that I don't think Sprint has fully thought through. And this could possibly derail unlimited for the long run, but...

With unlimited LTE, Sprint LTE speeds are going to be faster than approx. 75% - 80% of their customers home ISP's. Many people may try to abandon their Home ISP's and try to exploit Sprint LTE for home service, or like in your case, why use a local ISP limited to 600k or 1.5Mbps upload speeds? Many people will jump on the Sprint LTE to do uploads with their 5-10Mbps upload speeds. Even I might be tempted. I only have 600kbps upload at my home myself.

I expect Sprint to crack down on unauthorized tethering on their new LTE network. The new network has ample controls to indentify tetherers. I don't see the status quo being maintained. And they are going to have to implement something to preserve the new network. Sprint does not have the spectrum resources to be a Home ISP for even 20% of its data customers.

    Robert

Yes, it's like opening Pandora's Box.

I know someone on a legacy Verizon unlimited plan with unlimited hotspot (that was actually offered by Verizon). It's used as the primary internet connection at a residence that streams a lot of netflix. 20GB+ a month is typical.

We've seen sprint axe ALL legacy unlimited tethering plans last fall. Cracking down on illegal tethering will be a must.

It should be interesting how network performance evolves over time.

I thought it was interesting Sprint's management team stated that they haven't seen a change in new subscriber usage trends since they became the only carrier offering unlimited. Many bloggers predicted that all the heavy users would flock to Sprint... but that hasn't been the case according to Hesse.
