  1. VERY interesting thing happened yesterday. I responded to a call regarding missing equipment. Turns out to be a site that was in the process of receiving the NV upgrade but someone stole equipment and spools that were stored inside the gated area. I was able to snap all kinds of photos but I can't post images of the aftermath and disclose any real details until after the investigation is complete.

    Stay tuned.

  2. I remember when TV wasn't 24 hours a day and stations would go off the air at night. Ahh, memories. I bet most of our members agree too young to even get this clip.

Back in the day, I remember a tv station (WCGV Ch. 24) here going off air at about 7pm or so and it made room for SelecTV to broadcast. We would have to turn on the SelecTV decoder box at a specific time to receive whatever code was necessary to watch movies that night. The code sent OTA had to agree with the code entered in the thumb wheels on the front of the decoder box. If we were late in "warming up the box" we didn't get to see movies that day.

  3. Ok, so I got some sweet LTE over lunch. This was around Grand Ave. Mall. It didn't stick around though.

The test at the bottom was when I first noticed my phone flip to LTE. The test at the very top was just after it flipped back to 3G. The last 3G test did that weird thing where upload was crazy fast before settling down to a slower speed like I mentioned in a previous post (peaked around 250 KB/s).

Speeds are about what I got on AT&T Faux G a while back, but as we've all discussed plenty, they're doing work so this may not reflect what the speeds will be when it's finished. It's been shown to be faster in other cities. I know it's not the first time it's showed up, but this is easily the fastest it's been since I've noticed it.

As of right now, my phone is on 1xRTT and hasn't changed for the past half hour or so.

Also, a shameless plug for a company I have NO stake in: Spigen. If you have a Galaxy S4 or an iPhone 5, they make some sweet cases. I got the slim armor case for my iPhone and it's really slick! I didn't browse their catalog much, so they may have cases for other popular models.

Not sure if you're aware of it or not but 1x is simply your voice and text connection. Nothing more. Your 3G connection will be either EVDO or EHRPD. That's where all your data comes from.

  4. Yeah, I know it's pretty dense around here with the subscriber base, so I understand if it gets sluggish/unusuable. It just stinks. :/ Thanks for the info!

I've seen LTE pop up once around where I live on the lower east side and then at least a few times outside eating lunch closer to where I work, northeast of the Third Ward, so my assumption is that they're doing work. It makes the poor performance more bearable knowing (or at least believing) that there's work going on, haha.

As of now, my phone has dropped to 1xRTT data with no 3G. It's been flipping between the two a lot this week where I'd at least get 3G most of the time before (though it still had slow/inconsistent speeds).

The flippy floppy service (From 1x, to 3G to roaming) isn't unusual while they work the sites. It WILL settle down and you'll have tasty LTE goodness with lots of speed slathered on for flavor in no time.

The sucky part about downtown sites is that it's difficult to physically see progress because the antenna panels are mounted on a building so the work is less obvious. If you're lucky, you'll see work trucks parked in an alley.

  5. That Rimrock road tower is not that strong. I'm going to the great taste and just last night I was kayaking and came out the creek right next to the park. I kept going in and out of lte. After going into lake Monona a bit I lost it. My fastest speed was 25gb. How do u post screen shots? Is there an app for this website?

Easiest way is to use imgur.com. Create a free account there and upload your images. From there you can select the photos you wish to share here. To do that, click on "View Image Info" and select "Generate Image Links". Select the image you wish to post and then "Done". Be sure to change the link type to "Direct Link" and change the image size if you'd like.

In the "Reply to this topic" (or when you create a new one) section a topic or forum, click on the "Image" button. It looks like a tiny green square on the bottom row of  the format icons. Paste the COMPLETE URL of the image and then "OK" and your image will pop into place.

  6. Well, something must be going on. I randomly did a speed test just now. Ping was 550ms, download speeds averaged around 28 KB/s. The weird thing was that upload speeds jumped WAY up to 350ish KB/s and slowly settled back down to 80 KB/s. Speeds are usually the other way around with download being faster than upload. Even then, the upload speeds were much faster than what I had ever seen (up or down) when I've run speed tests inside the office.

Chances are, and it's not 100% sure (it's just my own layman's experience) that work is proceeding downtown. Typically when Network Vision work is going on at any given site, phones connected to that site will experience unstable service in all areas (Voice, Text and Data).

The other think to bear in mind is that since downtown is heavily populated, many phones may be trying to use data at the same time which, of course, drags things to a snail's pace - if you're lucky.

Considider dropping some scratch to the site and become a sponsor. You can find out how here: ( http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/1195-information-about-s4gru-sponsorship-levels-and-how-to-become-a-sponsor/ ) It doesn't take much - give what you can. You'll have access to lots of great information.

  7. I wonder if its becasue there are so many people in one area. The same thing happened for me during summerfest where I could t pick up LTE when at a concert but as I drove right past the park on my morning drive to work, I would have excellent signal and speed. Sprint always seems to struggle with very crowded areas but I can't make a comparison to other carriers as I have only ever used Sprint.

That's entirely possible, I guess. But I can't imagine so many Sprint customers in the area that it would bog the system. My guess is it just isn't operational at the moment as it tends to be a common thread that LTE goes up and down in some areas for a while. I can't say that's for sure, but who knows.

Besides.. I'm at the fair for the beer and fried butter anyway. And that cow with a hole in its side.
