  1. The Core Telephony framework been available and documented in the API since iOS 4.0.  However, Apple has only approved Apps using Core Telephony framework from carriers and not third party app developers.  If you look at the Core Telephony Framework Reference page in the iOS Developers Library you will find the documentation for the following classes:

    CTCall
    CTCallCenter
    CTCarrier
    CTTelephonyNetworkInfo

I guess Apple change their policy and allows applications using Core Telephony from third party app developers. I'd be interested to see Sensorly developers will finally release an iOS app that works like it's Android counterpart.

  2. Has anybody here used them? I first heard their commercial on Joe Rogan's podcast. It seems that they are reseller of Sprint network. You can bring over your Sprint phone if you switch to them (only for a few phones.). The nicest part of of this company is their pricing model as they credit you back unused minutes, data, & text. Moreover, if you go over your limit they automatically bump you to the next plan up instead of charging you inflated overages.

Financially it doesn't work for me as through my company I'm eligible for the Sprint Employer Discount.

The other thing that jumps out at me is roaming agreements (or lack thereof). I love that fact that as a Sprint customer I roam to Verizon 3G when Sprint is not available.

  3. BTW, I had a type in there - it was 17th and Chestnut, much closer to where you describe :)

The signal has been on for the past 2 hours. I may have to disable LTE on my phone as the signal is strong enough for my phone to pick it up and stay connected but weak enough were its draining my battery like crazy.

I'm not complaining and I can't wait until the site nearest to me is done. :)

  4. As someone who left T-Mobile in 2010 for Sprint the biggest factor for me was poor coverage in rural areas. I live in Philadelphia so my coverage at home was always descent. However, I have a ton of family in rural PA plus I love going weekend tent camping throughout the summer. So when weekends came around and I was in rural area my coverage generally sucked when I was on T-Mobile. It wouldn't have be so bad if T-Mobile had 3G roaming. However, since AT&T and T-Mobile run on different 3G bands the best I could had hope for was EDGE roaming on AT&T's network.

I love that when I'm in place with no Sprint service I can usually rely on picking up a Verizon 3G tower.

I don't know if that's still the case but unless something changes with T-Mobile I don't see myself ever going back no matter how good their LTE/HSPA+ coverage is in Metro areas.

  5. Thanks, Jerry!!

BTW, I was just able to grab an LTE signal at 11th and Chestnut...never saw one there before! The signal disappeared as I headed toward Market, so I'm thinking it was testing on the tower at 1826 Chestnut and I lost it when I got handed off to 1701 JFK. It was only a single bar and there were no LTE speeds, but it's progress!! :D

LTE has been in and out at 16th & Catherine all morning. The best signal I've gotten is -111dBm. At first I though it was the 17th & JFK site but I haven't gotten a signal from that tower since the LTE outage on Friday. Makes me think a new site has gone up in CC.

  6. I found plenty for iOS 3 but I never found anything for iOS4 ,especially for CDMA.

Any pointers you'd like to share via PM ?

Ole Begemann did an excellent write-up built upon Nicolas Seriot's iOS Runtime Headers github repo:

I believe what your looking for specifically is the coretelephony.framework:

  7. We've had an iOS app out for a while but it can't collect signal strength or the type of mobile network, due to Apple restrictions.

Any plans to release Sensorly App for jailbroken phones on Cydia where there are no such restrictions?

There is is plenty of good info out there regarding iOS Private API Documentation that will allow you to using private iOS functions to collect signal strength and/or mobile network.

  8. I turned on field doagnostic mode and enabled the -dB meter and I usually sit at -96-106 and from what I gather that's not good.

I'm guessing the tower near you is down for upgrade NV (or basic maintenance) and your phone is picking up a tower further away from you that is already upgraded to NV thus why your reception is so crappy but your download/upload test figures are performing better than normal.

  9. My service the last two days at my house has really sucked, I am normally getting between 2-5 bars but lately I have been at 1 or worse; roaming. I've tried doing the ##update# but it doesn't seem to help, perhaps I should call sprint and have them give me a free airwave. But perhaps they are doing work on the tower, I can only hope.

If this isn't normal chances are they are working on a tower near you. From most accounts during the NV rollout service gets worst before it gets better.

  10. So I took a screen shot but don't know how to upload it. But, 4G CAME ON! First time I've seen it. It was in Southwest Center City around 10am. I drove a few miles and it went back to 3G but it was still up for a bit! It seemed like the network didn't know how to react at first. It was loading web pages but eventually kicked in and moved faster.

You may be picking up the tower atop the building at 17th and JFK with LTE . I live at 16th and Fitzwater and have been getting a weak LTE signal in and out for the past few days only if I'm in direct sight of that building. Like on my roof.

  11. I've actually uninstalled this app numerous times, I only recently installed it again because of lte popping up in the area. I've noticed even when I have it set to no contribution or active only, it sets itself to passive and constantly runs scans. I caught it using 54% of my battery over a 9 hour period, ridiculous. Needless to say it will be uninstalled again soon, which is a shame because it's really an awesome resource.

Same here when I still had an Android device. I suspect that Apple won't approve a Sensorly app with the scan option included in iOS devices for this very reason.

  12. It's nice to say things should be free. But nothing is free, someone has to pay for it, because things actually cost money. This website costs about $1200 - $1500 per month to keep operating. Our members chose to have those costs be paid by donations, rather then advertising. That is the revenue model of this site.

You are welcome to only use the public content of this site, and that's fine. Sponsorship is not for everyone. And it helps us to keep the riff-raff out our Sponsor forums.

We offer a NV Running List thread which shows market percentages complete for the public: http://s4gru.com/ind...t-running-list/ However, maps are located in our Sponsor sections.

Very true. Hosting alone can cost a pretty penny not to mention the man hours of having a Sys Admin actively monitor and maintain your site.

Plus there is benefit to being an active sponsor. The maps alone are a great resource.

Robert, I too have seen weird 3G outages in Philly Metro area. One of those outages at home (16th & Fitzwater in CC) last week was followed by dramatic improvement in 3G performance from at best .5Mbp/s download speed to a steady 1.5 to 2.0Mbp/s. I can actually stream netflix on my phone now without WiFi.
