  1. This is a great analogy of an explanation of exactly the position Sprint is in. Ironically, the loudest complainers when Sprint dumps unlimited will be the biggest causes of why Sprint had to drop it.

Comparing the abuse of a human being to too much data being used on the network of a non-entity corporation is deeply disturbing.

  2. Using data is not the same as a dog crapping the park, but abusing data is similar, as both actions negatively affect others who share that resource.

Now, if the dog crapping analogy does not work for you, try this one. You bring your large pack of dogs to the dog park and let them run wild to the detriment of the other dogs and owners trying to use the dog park. That is very similar to overuse of "unlimited" data.

You are making an unwarranted assumption. Did I ever say that over 500 MB was "excessive" use? No, I said that I would appreciate a 500 MB base tier, and those who use above and beyond 500 MB should pay for their additional usage.

    AJ,

I completely understand where you are coming from, wireless spectrum, unlike fiber or other wired networks we use, is a physically limited resource. I ask you though, is Sprint selling it to their customers as such when they have ads like this?

I think it is understandable that people are frustrated when they've been sold a certain idea ("a billion roaming photo journalists uploading the human experience"). Obviously, they were not sold the dog crapping in the park paradigm, accurate as it might be.

  3. Not really surprising news from Team Haxsung and the other Samsung CM maintainers, they are not planning on supporting the Galaxy S4. After all the issues with the GS2 and GS3 with incomplete GPL releases, code that wouldn't compile, broken drivers, the Super Brick bug, etc, they've finally had it.

If you'd like some history, this is a great saga by Andrew Dodd on Google+ - https://plus.google....sts/aoAGK5yo13Y

Here is an XDA post from Team Hacksung - http://forum.xda-dev...32&postcount=27

    Source article - http://www.androidce...y-s4-should-you

TouchWiz on my Note 2 was much better than my GS2, but I still ended up on CM10.1 (this was just before digiblur's ROM came out). I've been using CM since my first Android device and that is a definite point that I look for when purchasing a new device. If Samsung helps devs, then CM will come to the GS4, if not a new hero/dev will need to be found.

    Edit in:

Official updates from CM - https://plus.google....sts/7jywLJdswki - Clarified to the points I made above, the articles today were only for support by Team Haxsung and a few other maintainers. The GS4 may get official CM support, but it will most likely be a new group of maintainers.

And a note from Ricardo Cerqueira- https://plus.google....sts/GegMJpRWAt5

Of course, there is a big exception here. All these people are talking about the Exynos SoC. It appears that there will again be a split, with the North American version containing a Qualacomm SoC while the international version ships with the Exynos 5. Qualacomm, through Code Aurora Forum, provides excellent support (and GPLed code) that makes the NA GS3 one of the best supported CM devices. Too bad Sony dosen't make CDMA phones though...

  4. Thought I would chime in here with some thoughts, since I'm in a 1st round market that has seen much work. The network is unquestionably better from where it was last fall. 3G was truly unusable, especially near any major highway or road. 4G penetration is pretty good in the south KS suburbs (OP, Leawood, etc), but not ubiquitous. Downtown and Midtown KC are better covered by 4G in my experience. Things have stalled a bit in the past month or so, owing to weather. The one thing I would note is that I feel like they need to tackle some of the building mounted sites. It seems as though they are responsible for covering some very busy areas (Metcalf, Town Center and the ever increasing offices around it) and it would patch many of the holes that remain. In summary, I think Sprint needs to put the pedal to the metal in April, May and June to keep up with their own timelines and solidify their NV work, which I'm guessing might be patchy in other round 1 markets outside of Chicago. Once the 'Kansas' market is up to about 85% completion or so, I do think the Sprint network will be a solid presence ready to take the fight to AT&T and Verizon.

Also, I guess 800Mhz LTE and voice will be cool, but I feel that the 1900Mhz cell spacing is so tight in KC I rarely if ever don't have voice and 3G coverage. Guess I'll have uber coverage (for voice and 1x that is).

  5. Probably related to Google Voice. I've had several calls to my GV number attempting to social engineer me. All had CID appearing to be from another GV number.

FWIW, the GS3 will let you hang up on 911, but your phone will default into emergency mode for 5-15 mins which locks out data and other calls (to allow dispatch a clear callback line).

That's the thing though, the number is perfectly valid (it is listed on their website) so it would've have to been spoofed. Second, it was the lamest social engineering I've ever seen. I guess they established that the phone number is live, but other than that they were perfectly content to end the conversation when it was clear I had no idea why they were calling. As for why they "let" me disconnect, I would guess they have to make some judgement call on calling back 911 disconnects and I think it was clear that I was not someone in imminent danger.

Edit: With the vast amount of telco knowledge we have around here, someone must have some experience with 911 systems. There is no way they have to manually enter a number to call it back right?

  6. Wanted to see if the collective talents of S4GRU might be able to shed some light on an interesting situation I just encountered. Around 15 minutes ago I received a call claiming to be from the Leavenworth, KS 911 dispatch, saying they were responding to a 911 disconnect from my number. I live in south suburban KC, roughly forty miles away. My phone log does not show a call to 911, nor does Google Voice or Sprint billing. What say you? A misdial on their part? Some kind of phantom call? A network issue? Anyone else ever ran into this?

  7. Dude, you need to relax. The 3g in Colorado is amazing. Plus Colorado is not that Important. Look at LA. Not launched yet. There are more people in L.A. then in the State of Colorado. Obviously Sprints reason for one network over another is different than what you or I think should happen.

As a proud denizen of flyover country, I love to hear people from SoCal mention non-important areas. Either way, the rollout schedule and the updates that have taken place were/are influenced by so much more than population size. Spectrum constrains (Chicago!), contractor and backhaul availability are just a few that come to mind.

That said, I believe the first of the third round markets have begun to see full installations start (Phoenix + Vegas), so Colorado should be seeing NV work soon.

  8. Once the network connection leaves the tower, what happens ? Is there a VPN to a market hub or does it go out to the cloud and straight to Kansas City through a VPN ? Intrested in the learning the back end logistics of how it work ?

It goes to the MSC, which you can determine by clicking on the sites pin, and from there it is routed out to the larger internet. Not sure if a VPN is strictly necessary as they have their own backhaul to the MSC. AFAIK, there is no central NOC in Overland Park/Kansas City, except for the respective MSCs for that market. Perhaps they have some kind of warroom at the campus. Also, this is for data, I do not know the ins and outs of how they route voice. Now Robert and AJ, let us know if that is all wrong.

  9. So my Evo is cutting off my texts, I assume at the 160 character mark. My GS2 would always send it all no matter how many characters I had.

Is there a setting I can change to make it send it all or at least split it up into 2 texts

Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

CM10 devs for the Sprint Galaxy S3 have noted this same behavior with that phone as well, but only for a small subset of users. They argue that it is an isolated Sprint network issue and introduced a custom messaging APK to manually split the messages. So, as others have recommended, a different messaging app is probably what you need.

  10. Really depends on where you are in Brookline.

If you are at Coolidge Corner, there is a sprint antenna on top of the movie theater. It's been upgraded with network vision gear but no LTE yet. Coverage is great in that area. It's hilarious, it points directly at the only Sprint store in Brookline. I'll grab a picture later.

Further away from Boston, coverage gets pretty hit/miss. They really need to follow what AT&T/T-Mobile/Verizon/Clearwire (yes, even clearwire) did and put in a tower to cover Washington Square. I wonder how many subs have ported out over the years because they don't have coverage on the green line.

    So to answer your question:

Yes, in the half of brookline closest to Boston, coverage is good. In the middle of Brookline, there are no towers, so it's a black hole and you get bounced around from one weak connection to the next.

Boston coverage is very solid, never had any issues in Boston.

if you give me a better idea of where you will be visiting in Brookline, I can give you a better idea of coverage.

Also, if you want some restaurant pointers, I can make some good suggestions (zaftigs for brunch, washington sq tavern and the abbey for a nice dinner, the publick house for casual dinner and an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING beer selection, rod dee for good thai food that's cheap and quick (casual).

I'll be staying right at the Hawes St. Green line station (right on Beacon St. really). Any suggestions for seafood?

  11. The panels have 3 separate downtilt adjustments. PCS EVDO/1X to mock the legacy network, 800SMR, and PCS LTE. If by some miracle, the tower crew fires up 3G when they fire up 4G. They would of course have to adjust the PCS EVDO/1X downtilt to be somewhat like the previous legacy equipment in order to prevent interference with adjacent legacy network cells. They can do whatever they want with the 800SMR and LTE downtilt adjustments of course.

Your voice and texting issues could probably be solved when your local site becomes 3G activated (meaning legacy is shut down) due to the newer panel and RRU benefit. But I bet it will really make a difference when 800SMR is activated in your area. It might possibly be activated right now with that goofy Utah SID or maybe even the Tampa SID. You'll have to test that 800SMR PRL with all SIDs activated to find out.

Ah, good to know. I didn't know they had separate down-tilts for all 3.

  12. It might also be relevant to note that we might not see the complete NV boost in signal strength until downtilt is adjusted back to pre-NV levels. I have heard it mentioned several times on here that due to the incomplete nature of the build out to this point, that most panels have little downtilt, in an effort to maximize area covered. I don't know if any NV buildout is far enough along to have had the downtilt adjusted.

  13. I don't have specifics about brookline, but i have noticed that maybe of the Boston sites seem to be up and down frequently. I've gone a lot of places that sensorly has LTE showing, yet there is zero. I wouldn't get your hopes up based on sensorly for anything in Boston sadly.

Bummer. How's the 3G service in and around Boston? Usable at all?

  14. Baltimore is an Lucent market being serviced by Alcatel-Lucent. Service interuptions are basically in all active NV markets be it Alca-lu, Sammy, or Eric. Just part of the growing pains.

In KC, no noticeable issues transitioning from NV to non-NV upgraded sites. It is my impression that was really just a Chicago/Motorola issue.

  15. No, not necessarily good. This gives VZW, AT&T, and T-Mobile ammo against Sprint-uh-Bank. A majority Japanese owned company controls so much spectrum, they will claim. Unless another suitor was ready to grab Clearwire, this deal does not make sense now, especially as Sprint-uh-Bank would like to put pressure on the T-Mobile-MetroPCS deal, forcing NewCo to divest excess PCS 1900 MHz spectrum.

    AJ

I can understand your concerns, but on the flip side, you would have to admit that Sprint has access to their regulators on a much more intimate level then you or I. I would hope their lobbyists have already felt things out and they are moving forward only after feeling confident about their chances, even with full control of Clearwire.

  16. Per the CNBC article, sounds like Sprint gaining control of Clearwire is a precondition for the deal closing.

While a Sprint purchase of Clearwire will not be announced tomorrow, sources familiar with the situation tell me Sprint is working on that deal and needs to insure the governance for Clearwire is in its control prior to closing the Softbank transaction.

    http://www.kansascit...ve-deal-to.html

Per this KC Star article, it also looks like part of the deal is $3 billion in convertible bonds, which will be sold before the deal closes to provide funding for Sprint. Should allow them to keep pace on NV, or even speed up...
