  1. Stopped by the Sprint store at Clybourn & Armitage yesterday. I'm looking to upgrade my ancient Epic 4G (I like the build of the Evo LTE, but I've read all the worrying stuff about the signal).

Chatted up the sales guy--he said in the last week they got the go-ahead to begin working on the downtown sites in January. Before, they had been told April.

The LTE phones were all holding a 4G connection, though it wasn't all that fast (I tested the speed on this site, because I couldn't download a proper app on the demo phones. That may have been behind the slower speeds, I have no idea). On average, the speed was between 1-2 Mbps download.

FWIW, I tested the S3, the Evo, and the iPhone 5. All three had similar signal levels (about -80 dB), which was surprising to me (expected the Evo to lag the other two). Obviously, I couldn't test the ability of the phones to connect to the proper network when going in/out of a 3G/4G area.

If you're main concern is ease of connectivity, I don't recommend the EVO LTE. You'll be toggling your radios and doing the airplane mode trick to connect.

Although it's supposed to be better since the JB update. I haven't really tested it yet since I just flashed the OTA last night.

  2. I have a question...

I got a signal inside my house right now. (I'm still connected as well) So I left my phone in the same spot and decided to run some speed tests on my laptop that's tethered to my LTE connection. I'm in a south suburb of Chicago, when I see what server it's connecting to for the speed test it's in Kansas City. I got like 10mbps when I ran the tests, but the upload speed is slow. Any reason it's connecting to a tower so far away?

  3. I have a quick question for those with the EVO LTE.

    I'm still on 1.13.651...

I've been holding out on updating because I like keeping my options open for root access/unlocked bootloader. I rooted like last week just to test some things out and to put Google Now on my phone.

If you have this phone on the latest firmware are you connecting to LTE more consistently? I know I have LTE in my neighborhood but it's just a chore to connect to it consistently. I'll update to the latest firmware if it will improve my connection.

If nothing else works, I'm going to go to Sprint and try to get the phone exchanged for the GS3. There's a Sprint store in my town that gets great LTE coverage so I figure if I show them side by side how my phone isn't connecting like the GS3 is or iPhone then that should be a good start to getting the GS3.

    Wish me luck

  4. I messed around with some settings (*#*#4636#*#*)

I toggled it to LTE, CDMA and I was able to connect to the tower right away. The speeds aren't anywhere close to what you guys are posting though. Damn @ 20 to 40+ down, that's crazy. I would cancel my internet if I was getting that. I'm getting just 2.5 down on average. I was getting closer to 20 back when I was on the testing towers. I'm in Matteson, has anybody been able to get speeds comparable to that? (in the 15 to 20mb range) If so which phone do you have?

    I'm on the EVOLTE.

  5. Are there any settings that I can mess around with on my EVO LTE to see if I can catch a signal? I was able to connect to the towers when they were testing them a few months back, so I was sure that when today hit that I would be able to connect again. I haven't been able to. I've updated the PRL, and toggled the CDMA and LTE/CDMA option as well. Is there anything else I can do to see if it's on in my neighborhood?

I think I might go to the Sprint store and see if any of the other LTE phones can connect to make sure it's not an issue with my phone.

  6. I'm kicking myself for buying a new phone and renewing my contract right now. I've been patient with Sprint for years too. If it weren't for that deal that Wirefly had for the LTEVO I would have just stuck with the OG EVO in the meantime.

It's annoying for me because I've seen the 4G turned on in my neighborhood a month or so ago and now it's nothingness again. Nothing but over analyzing going on as to why are service is slow.

  7. In Matteson right now at Cicero and Lincoln Highway and picked up my first 4G signal! Tests are averaging between 10-15Mb/s down with my highest so far at 19. Screenshots to come!

These pics are from like 3 weeks ago. I have gotten a consistent 4G signal in Matteson from the new rec center through Lincoln HWY. It flakes out when you turn onto Governer's HWY though...

I've gotten a signal inside of my house (last weekend to be exact) and when I got to test it the speeds were around the same as in the pics. But I've been trying to connect to it all night again and I can seem to. Usually I'll put the phone in CDMA mode and then go to LTE/CDMA and it'll pop up... hasn't been working lately.

It would have came in handy tonight too, because my Comcast service is out due to the storms from earlier. I'm tethering from the piss poor 3G speeds now.
