As a real world example, my college dorm was wired with Ethernet, and Sprint equipment was literally mounted next to my window, on the other side of the wall. The back of the antenna was maybe 5 feet from my computer. No one in my dorm had Ethernet issues.

Excellent.  That's great info.  Thanks Ingenium.

The frequency in use by telecommunications networks, ie 600,700,800,850,1700-2100,1900, 2300, 2500, 3.5 and beyond do not interfere with ethernet cabling or unlicensed 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz. Any 5 GHz unlicensed LTE eNBs will scan for 5 GHz wifi signals and self optimize to not interfere with them.

Run all those ethernet drops and WAPs to your hearts content as per your rf survey planning.

lilotimz: Thank you for the help!

Just curious.  Is this something you run into from time to time (ethernet networks essentially co-located with Cell Tower equipment)?  Could I run into some issues, or does it just never happen in your experience?  The client will be doing VoIP for telephony, so even marginal dropouts are a potential issue.

Have you ever run STP (shielded twisted pair) to mitigate potential unwanted interference?  Did it work and did it help?

  3. This is a question about the use of ethernet cabling for brand new offices, on which external directional cell tower antennas are mounted.

A client is planning to move his offices into the penthouse suite of this building, which is currently being rebuilt.  The client is planning to move into the penthouse suite which is the same structure that holds external antennas for Sprint, TM and VZW on at least 3 sides.  Also the equipment rooms housing the gear used by Sprint, TM and VZW are in one area, but within the same structure that the office space is being built from.

Those of you who have worked in close proximity to the back side of cell site antennas that are mounted on buildings, are you aware of interference problems with regular CAT 6 UTP for computers and data?  If not, does it call for STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) or do we need to use Fiber for every drop?

What about using their existing WAP's (wireless access points) for WiFi for the offices.  Will that work, or will it be a signal nightmare?

  4. What, if any, Sprint network enhancements would those in the know expect to see in the San Diego market a year from now - around December, 2015.

Backhauls finally in place everywhere?  LTE coverage far more built out than it is now - maybe even seriously blanketing the populated county?  New towers and coverage where needed?  Data speeds running at max everywhere?

It seems that the pace of Sprint's upgrades in San Diego have slowed tremendously over the past year, and that another year from now, we may not have any significant coverage and performance improvements over what we have now?

  5. For those of you that travel to North County from San Diego often, have you noticed or seen the new antennas being replaced behind that 76 gas station at Manchester Ave/5 frwy ramp? You can see it from both sides of the freeway. It's also 3G accepted looking at sponsor map.

Excellent Marv.  I'll check it out.

  6. Great Pic's on the link Marv. Hopefully one of the gurus can tell us who uses the equipment on the telephone pole.  Good to know they've finally got 4G up and running.  Anxious to see the Sensorly mapping.

Thankx for mapping that out. Seems like Sprint's continuing to make some progress.

  7. 3dog, I looked at the tower maps last night, and noticed a new LTE update east of Encinitas Blvd where it meets up with Manchester/Rancho Santa Fe. I will go see what's up mapping wise Monday afternoon during my lunch. Hopefully that loop can be mapped this time around.

    That's excellent Marv.  Thanks.

Also, If you happen past it, while crusing around today I noticed some cellular equipment on a telephone pole on the east side of RSF Rd, just south of Camino Del Norte.  Is that Sprint equipment too?

  8. One of the problems with Sensorly is that you can't tell if an LTE signal isn't showing up because no one has mapped it, or because there isn't an LTE signal there.  In Pacific Beach, for instance, I'll bet it's been mapped and there isn't any LTE there, but nothing shows up on Sensorly, so you're left to wonder.

Hey Marv, if you can someday, would it be possible for you to take a mapping drive of some more of Encinitas?  It would be great to map this route.  Take Olivenhain Rd (near Home Depot), east to Rancho Santa Fe Rd, then go south, past the Old Olivenhain Meeting Hall and the Original House of Pancakes, down to Manchester.  Go south / west past Mira Costa College and under the fwy to the coast and then back up to Leucadia Blvd?  Or, if you've already done it, and no LTE mapped out, that would be really good to know too.

    Thx!

  9. The Galaxy Victory 4G LTE is actually a really good RF device that could give most flagship phones a run for its money. iirc, it's RF characteristics are right around if not slightly above the GS3. The HTC One's RF characteristic is slightly below the GS3.

    Hey Lilotimz.

Where does the RF characteristic info come from.  Is it on the web somewhere?  I'd like to know before I screw up when I go to get my next phone.  I assume others would too.  Great info to know.

    Thx

  10. Just mapped east of Encinitas Blvd, more west of Encinitas Blvd, mapped over El Camino Real heading north in between Encinitas Blvd passing through Garden View.

Great job Marv1.  I see the new mappings on Sensorly.  You're making great progress.

  11.

Hey Marv, I really do appreciate your Encinitas updates.

As you have time, could you map the loop from ECR east on Encinitas Blvd down to Rancho Santa Fe (where the Pancake House is) then north on RSF up to Olivenhain Road, and back west to ECR.

My other query would be Coast Hwy south from La Costa down to Swami's and Solana Beach, and the major arteries off of it that go to El Camino Real - Leucadia Blvd, Encinitas Blvd, Santa Fe, and Manchester.

    Thanks!

3dog, I mapped up that little shopping center where the LA Fitness is located on El Camino Real/Encinitas Blvd. I noticed for the first time Sprint panels are located on the side and back of the 99 Cent store building. Next was heading East  after mapping the shopping center, but the entire network goes out just as I was about to turn, along with Sensorly freezing up losing data. About a minute or so later, it comes back on showing 3G. Other than that, I'll go out maybe later on in the week, and see if anything pops up in the areas you mentioned.

Thanks Marv1.  I appreciate your checking out those places when you get a chance.

I too have that loss of signal on Encinitas Blvd, right about that location (bottom of the mall driveway at Encinitas Blvd., and one more spot on the other side (west) of ECR on Encinitas Blvd. up near the top of the hill  It's been that way for more than 2 months now.  I sure hope they fix it soon.  Might have to call Sprint and complain.

  12. Today's mapping update...........

I decided to try Encinitas Blvd again earlier this afternoon hoping to map the East side of it. Before I did that, I got onto /Garden View/Via Cantebria which always instantly switches over to LTE. Once I got to Encinitas Blvd via Via Cantebria, LTE switched back to 3G at the traffic light before I made a left heading East to get on Encinitas Blvd. It does it everytime for some odd reason. I headed East, and once I stopped at the El Camino Real/Encinitas Blvd intersetion, LTE pops up on LTE Discovery. Instead of continuing East in which I couldn't do being in the far right turn lane, I mapped up El Camino Real heading a little more South, then made a U-turn at a traffic light on Willowspring Dr. As mentioned before, someone mapped Santa Fe Dr which was the next street down. So that's now connected. While making the U-turn heading back to the intersection, LTE was running strong with all 5 bars, and right when I was about to turn on Encinitas Blvd to to head East, 3G is back on. On the Eastside, 3G speeds were faster than normal. Didn't do a speed test to get number results, but browsed the net while waiting at stop lights.

    Thanks!

  13. hi guy's,,, here is some new news .........

    San Diego

...Sites Complete = 36%; Anticipated LTE Launch = Spring 2013

...Original Scheduled Completion = May 2013; Current Production Rate Completion = Janaury 2014

Does anyone have any info on the specifics of why they're running late? Technology issues (not working right), Funding (no gear), Site prep (sites can't take the new gear), Work crew (not enough people or they're busy in other places), Started late?

Are they falling further behind, or is January holding steady as the end of the build period?

  14. I will try again tomorrow morning, and see what happens. I work a couple of blocks down from that intersection.
Hey Marv, I did see where your good work resulted in updates down El Camino Real on Sensorly. Great job. BTW, don't bust your hump checking it out. It's probably going to take them a little while to get it all together. However, we do really appreciate your mapping runs. Thanks!
  15. Hey thanks for checking it out so quick Marv. I sure hope Sprint will get it fixed up one of these days. I know that as of last weekend, I still drop calls on Encinitas Blvd, while showing 5 bars, so I think they're continuing to work on it. Anyway, thanks for taking the ride, and if you feel like checking again every once and a while, I'd sure appreciate it (as I don't have my LTE phone yet). The Sensorly map looks awfully vacant through Encinitas. Great to know they're finally beginning to populate El Camino Real.

  16. I mapped again to Encinitas Blvd. Couldn't do a speed test due to busy lunch time traffic. What I did notice where I work, my network showed "EVDO revison A" before LTE popped up. What does that mean?

Marv, you are the man. If you have an opportunity to cruise Encinitas Blvd east and west of El Camino Real, I would be most appreciative.

    Thanks!

  17. Just a little FYI about 4G in Encinitas. I finally called Sprint today to complain about how my calls keep dropping while traversing Encinitas Blvd - both east and west of El Camino Real. My signal is always good - 5 bars, but the call goes buggy and then the phone loses the call.

Anyway, the Sprint person in customer service said - after looking on a map because I didn't have an "address" to give her - "They're installing Network Vision upgrades in that area. It should be finished by the end of the month. If you continue to have problems next month, call us back."

So, that sounds like potentially good news!
