Spoke to an engineer who was installing some Nokia antennas in Pomona, CA off the 71. Said Sprint is really making a push to upgrade all the towers out in the IE and also install small cells because the IE is really lagging so that's a good thing

If this is true then hallelujah! Sub single digit speeds in Menifee and Temecula gets old fast... Ill be keeping an eye out for any progress out here

So that 2H2018 was probably just a conservative guess on their part since they really don't know. At least that's what it sounds like. Could be anytime all the way up till the next 2 years

Two years actually seems about right depending on how quick Mexico rebands. Once Mexico is finished then sprint has to wait on San Bernardino to finish up. Then at some point sprint then has to put 800 MHz RRUs on nearly every site in SoCal, or at least the ones that got NV upgrades after they realize this was going to take an extra 7 years...

I recently emailed Günther Ottendorfer and got a response from another Sprint employee that all of LA Metro won't be getting B26 until 2H2018. That seemed contrary to the public opinion about San Bernardino being the holdup in this market, so I pressed them about it and they cited frequency clearing in Mexico as the holdup.
Perhaps the Sprint employee got "LA Metro" and Southern California mixed up? The IBEZ extends into parts of Riverside County and OC but no where near LA proper.

With Sprint's current capex? Never. SoftBank spends at least as much as Sprint does on their network, and in some years dramatically more, to cover a much smaller country with many extremely dense cities.
If Sprint can get their financials in order and start to match the other US networks in terms of capex, densification along with their wealth of 2.5Ghz spectrum should help them match SoftBank's speeds. Coverage wise they would essentially have to come close to matching Verizon. That could be done with an aggressive 800Mhz only expansion similar to what T-Mobile has been doing in the US and what SoftBank did in Japan, after it acquired a 900Mhz licence, to match KDDI and NTT DoCoMo. Of course, this also costs money that Sprint doesn't have at the moment.

What kind of speeds do they see out that way? Would a Sprint phone roam onto that network and get full speeds?
September 2015 was the last time OpenSignal broke down speeds by operator, but at the time SoftBank was at 20Mbps with 80% LTE coverage. For comparison Verizon was at 12Mbps and 84% LTE coverage and Sprint was at 6Mbps with 64% LTE coverage.
SoftBank uses LTE bands 1, 8, 3 and 41 so an iPhone 6s could roam with full speeds and coverage. However, while Softbank has a plan that allows its customers to roam on sprint with full speeds, I don't think the reverse is true.

Seeing as how Masa likes to talk about how he developed Sprint's NGN plan, I thought it might be interesting to have a thread about SoftBank's band 41 network in japan so that we can hopefully have a glimpse into Sprint's future.
Seeing as the heart of NGN are "mini-macro" sites, let's start with SoftBank's equivalent. These use 4x4 or 8x8 MIMO and from what I can tell have primarily been repurposed from WILLCOM's PHS network after it was aquired by SoftBank.
SoftBank also uses a variety of directional antennas. These are also either 4x4 or 8x8 MIMO.
Pico cells are also in use, with some even being 4x4 MIMO solutions.
Apparently, Softbank has also recently started to deploy Huawei 128 element Massive MIMO systems with 3D beamforming!

I was at Ontario Airport earlier this week and was connected go Band 26 while I was there and inside Ontario Mills. I thought they were gonna roll oub Band 26 when they were San Bernardino safety department was done rebanding.
I feel like that almost has to be a bug.

From that it seems like san bernardino public safety had until January 2017 to finally move off the 800mhz spectrum. It would be a miracle if they're done already.

AirSpan / Alcatel-Lucent, Samsung, Nokia, and Ericsson so far are the ones who will supply Sprint with pico cells.
Do you know how heavily they plan on relying on their 2.5 spectrum for backhaul and if they plan on using it more with los or nlos? Sprint seems to keep mentioning how much it will help them with their small cell roll out.

Looks like SoftBank has been testing out some Airspan small cells. Seems like they would be a great ngn vendor with their nlos backhaul products and previous small cell tests with Sprint.

I think sprint might be having some issues in parts of Riverside. I was having the same issue just north of Temecula .

What modem is the GN4 going to pack? Judging by no carrier aggregation, I'd guess MDM9625.
Judging by this article on anandtech and from what we've seen on other Snapdragon 805 phones i would imagine it should be a cat6 capable MDM9x35.

That's the theory. But there's an entire eCSFB thread about Triband phones not being able to maintain an LTE connection.
True, but that's not really the phone's problem. That's a problem with whoever is installing the network equipment and should be solved sooner rather than later. The benefits of a triband phone outweighs the negatives, provided the network is working as intended.

As a consumer, I don't really care about Sprint's needs, only mine.
Perhaps I'm confusing SVLTE and eCSFB. But they seem interconnected.
Bottom line is: if I can't use my phone's LTE connection, then Sprint's "unlimited data" appeal is essentially worthless since their 3g data is even more crippled and hobbled than LTE. Sprint risks losing me as a customer. If it costs Sprint extra $$, let them eat the cost. They probably will anyhow to be competitive and prevent hemorrhaging customers.
The only time you can not use unlimited data / LTE is during a call. This is because SVLTE/SVDO (simultaneous voice and lte/evdo) is not supported on triband phones. However, using data in no way impacts your ability to receive a call. eCSFB (enhanced circuit switched fallback) is there to ensure you're switched to 1x when that happens. Hope that makes sense.

Decided to do a speed test a minute ago from my house here in Menifee. Hopefully that ping and those speeds means that 4g is coming soon! A few weeks ago it seems as if i was lucky to get any 3g at all.
