  1. Oh, come on. In good fun, I teased *another staff member* about his use of an iPhone. Because of its locked down, walled garden nature, iPhone cannot do many of the things that wireless network nerds do, such as use Sensorly mapping, swap PRLs, have fully functioning engineering screens, etc. That does not make anyone who chooses an iPhone a "moron, rube, technophobe, or whatever" -- those are your words. But it does take away from their wireless network nerd-dom, as they prioritize less the things that wireless network nerds prioritize most. In the end, iPhone users need to buck up and be less sensitive.

As for worrying greatly about "Page, Brin, Schmidt & Co" mining your data, that is flat out paranoia, the realm of the tinfoil hat crowd.

    AJ

But but but I can change the PRLs on my iphone easily ;)

  2. We allow the discussion of altering PRL's because Sprint allows you to use up to 300MB of roaming data per month. How you use that 300MB is not a violation of the terms of service, so we allow it.

We also allow people to discuss using unlimited data. However, we hold people accountable for abusing unlimited data. We believe encouraging abuse of unlimited data will only bring it to an end even sooner than it would normally. When it comes to tethering, Sprint requires people to subscribe to a tethering plan. And tethering plans have to be paid for and they have monthly limits. Some people don't like that, so they find ways to bypass having to pay for it, or to use as much as they want.

If Sprint allowed 300MB of unauthorized tethering per month, we would allow the discussion. However, Sprint doesn't allow any unauthorized tethering. So we do not allow unauthorized tethering threads or posts.

The point of the discussion as it pertains to S4GRU comes to violation of Sprint's Terms and Conditions, not that it costs Sprint money. That has been in our Posting Guidelines since we created them: http://s4gru.com/ind...-aka-the-rulez/

S4GRU has this posting guideline to protect us from Sprint. We are not exactly celebrated by Sprint. We provide confidential information from internal sources. Sprint is not fond of that. We do not want to give them ammo against us to try to shut us down. Sprint has been able to shut down another site providing confidential information.

It’s a judgment call we have made. Some do not agree with our stand, and feel we should be the XDA for Sprint customers pushing the envelope as far as possible. We understand it’s not popular with everyone. But it is not something we are flexible on. We will continue to enforce it.

In regards to PRL modifications, it also goes to the very spirit of S4GRU. We are wireless enthusiasts. We enjoy understanding and modifying our devices and how they work and interact on the network. PRL modification goes to the very heart of that. And it can be done within the rules of Sprint, and brings Sprint no harm. We feel like we can defend it if we ever had to.

I’m open to further discussion on the subject. However, this is not something we will be changing. People can call me a hypocrite, and that’s fine. But in reality, we all are hypocrites. We all live in a place where we have to make judgment calls every day, and many of those decisions will appear contrary to each other for other people looking from the outside. It’s life. But it is something we have looked at carefully, and our position is not by ignorance or accident.

As for this quote, you are missing the point of S4GRU. S4GRU does not exist for customers to “take full advantage of Sprint” realized to the maximum. S4GRU’s Mission statement is: "To provide a forum for discussion and education about wireless spectrum, networks, and Sprint Network Vision, in particular, in an online community that is mature, intelligent, and free from uncritical negativity."

You may see S4GRU as you prefer it to be, rather than what it is.

:o sprint has shut down a site before because of the information on it?

That depends. The iPhone 5 has had a lot of data issues (on all carriers). One was fixed with a carrier file update. The AN_AAA authentication failure is something that gets corrupted and even a full software wipe and reflash will not correct. It requires the phone to be replaced. The iOS 6.1.2 software fixes the cause, but it cannot bring back a phone that's already corrupted.

The symptom of this issue is the phone switching back and forth between the 34G and o icon (failing network authentication). This can also be caused by a phone failing multiple times due to an outdated NAI and being locked out. The testing steps to determine whether it falls into the AN_AAA criteria:

    1. Wipe the device (erase all content and settings for restore in iTunes).

    2. Leave the phone OFF for at least 30 minutes (this allows the network side block to timeout if it is in effect due to failed logins).

    3. Turn the phone on and go through activation again.

    4. The phone will either reactivate with correct information and work correctly, or will still switch between 3G and o. IF it is still switching it is affected by the AN_AAA issue and needs to be replaced.

    5. ???

Hm... I've had the iPhone 5 for a few months now, and occasionally it switches between 3G and o. Toggling airplane mode or waiting for half a minute fixes it but it gets annoying as it will do this randomly and sometimes in the middle of some work, timing everything out. I can connect and work on LTE, 3G, and 1x just fine, and I'm jailbroken. Do you think I have this AN_AAA issue? I would rather not want to replace my iphone as 6.1.4 can't be jailbroken.... PM me please? :)

  4. IMO, 10 GB per month for same price of what we pay for unlimited is a good way to go. Abusers have a limit, its high enough so that it's still "unlimited" to most subs, and also high enough in case someone wants to go on a trip and doesn't have access to the Internet so that they don't need to worry about their cap.

I have noticed that my i5! Either will let me talk or drop completely. I rarely ever get the "I can't hear you" from the person on the other end. It seems like it either works clearly or just drops.

Because CDMA will have either great voice quality or you just don't have service :P is that right?

  6. Did anyone else receive a message today like this:

SprintFreeMsg: CPUC is holding Public Participation Hearings re: CA Lifeline Program R.11-03-013. Info at sprint.com/consumerinfo

    What is this?

  7. So just today on my iPhone my 3G went all haywire, it will connect but it won't let me do anything on it, LTE works, calls work, it's just the 3G that doesn't, I will check back after I test if 1x works for data still, also 3G works when I hard reset the phone but only for a short while, moved around the city to make sure its not the cell tower, and 3G still doesn't work. I can't dial ##873283# though, just says update failed.... Help? :/ I'm jailbroken with but I haven't modified anything today and it was working on previous days/

The 1xEV-DO screen always works, but the 1x only screen doesn't. It's a strange thing, but hopefully soon it'll be fixed.

Looking at your 1xEV-DO screens, you have perfect signal. So that could explain the signal bars, but I've had strange anomalies with my signal number hovering on -106 in a good signal area every so often.

The CDMA1X screen won't fully populate, even on my iPhone 5.

I thought the topic concerned the numeretical value of the signal on the top left whenever we go into field test mode? But you're right, the 1x only screens never work....
