  1. Yeah where I work in Midtown Atlanta I get 10-14 mbps but, at home (just 3.5 miles away near Emory University), I get no wimax signal at all. But, the 3G is generally quite good and, at this moment of this message I am pulling 1.4 mbps but can get up to 1.8 or a bit higher at times.
  2. I might try that. On second thought, as soon as I learn how to root my phone and flash a workable ROM that will run Jelly Bean, I think I'd just rather do that. I don't imagine it will be long before that's possible (if it isn't already).
  3. I realize I'm in the minority, but I really can't understand that chart. Could you give a brief overview of how to read it? I'm a partial nerd...haven't graduated yet to full nerd status! LOL
  4. My GSII never received the OTA push, no matter how many times I went into system update. So I downloaded it to an SD card and booted it up from there, forcing it to update manually. But now my phone is jacked up - it freezes constantly, especially when using Chrome. I don't know what's up with it but it's consistently laggy and frustrating where Gingerbread was smooth and quite responsive (and never once froze to my knowledge). Is there anyway to UNDO the ICS "update?"
  5. Goooo, Tigers! ha ha
  6. LOL..agreed. Forever the underdog, it seems. I've been with them for 11 or 12 years now but they do have a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot at nearly every turn with one PR mess or another. But, then again, I'm a bit of a mess myself..hence my love for the Now Network! I'll never leave!
  7. Yes I downloaded the zip file(to my laptop) earlier this week. It's just that i don't have an sd card so I can't load it up on my phone just yet. I may buy one today or tomorrow and go ahead and force it onto my phone. But I sorta wanted to wait for the official OTA. If I don't have the official OTA by tomorrow night, I'll definitely go buy an SD card so I can install it myself Tuesday morning. Thanks.
  8. Again, has ANYONE actually received this ICS upgrade from Sprint? I still can't access it on my E4GT. Yes, I'm aware it could be as late as the 20th but I have yet to hear of one single person who has actually received the OTA upgrade. Anyone, anyone....Bueller..anyone?
  9. That's just reprehensible. It really is. There is no excuse for that...reminds me of the AOL dial up days. Oh dear God..the terrible memories!!
  10. OK, thanks. That sucks. It would definitely improve 3G coverage in this very spotty area of Atlanta in which I live. Darn!
  11. So then the chart is incorrect - 3G will NOT be migrating to the 800 mhz frequency this year as part of NV?
  12. Somewhat related, is this bit from this Wikpedia article true? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_Nextel Scroll down to the "wireless networks" chart about halfway down. There you will see the source of my question - is Sprint really taking 3G (Evdo Rev.A) to the 800 mhz frequency this year, well in advance of taking LTE to 800 mhz in 2014? To be clear, I was already aware of the eventual migration of LTE from the current 1900 mhz to the future 800 mhz post-iden decommissioning, however, I was under the impression that 3G wouldn't be moved until LTE was, if at all. That said, is that the reason 3G coverage is expected to expand "up to 20%?" I would imagine the substantially lower frequency would suddenly make 3G signal MUCH stronger and, presumably, notably faster when combined with the enhanced backhaul. I think a light just clicked on somewhere deep inside my thick skull....I think I get it!
  13. A. Detroit is a nightmare. Some of the suburbs are gorgeous and Ann Arbor is to die for. But, Detroit, really?? B. Windsor is part of the same metro area, albeit across the border. You'll definitely be able to use your native signal there with no issue whatsoever so long as you stay within a few miles of the border (Windsor is small so this shouldn't be a problem). Trust me, I know from personal experience re: this exact situation. C. Next time you go to Canada, do yourself a favor and just continue down the 401 to Toronto. It's only 4 more hours but SO worth the drive!!
  14. Agreed. The Gnex is somewhat "outdated" by the EVO 4G LTE (absurd name) and the GSIII in that the Gnex is only sporting a 5 MP camera, among other things (though we all know that MP count doesn't necessarily always translate into better pics). Also, to many, the Super LCD2 screen on the EVO is better as the colors are "more natural." For me, the EVO has boring color reproduction and it looks rather washed out. This is probably because I currently sport a GSII and am used to the Super AMOLED color reproduction and so I am biased. But I do prefer the way Sense 4.0 on the EVO handles multitasking as the horizontally sliding card format reminds me of my Palm Pre WebOS days. Sammy's TouchWiz UI is the achilles heel of the Galaxy S, SII and the SIII. It's just too....."gingerbready" and busy for me even though it's what I'm rockin. So, as the previous poster said, it's too difficult to say "yes, get this phone" or "no, don't get that phone" because this is all very subjective and each user has his/her own needs and wants and so the best you can do is to clearly identify your needs, identify which traits you want in a phone and then ultimately make your choice.
  15. Idiots standing in the way of progress. Is it harsh? Perhaps. But I say it because it's true. If you want a stronger, better network, you're gonna have to deal with the infrastructure that makes it possible. It's like wanting to get rich without working hard, getting something for nothing. In the universe I live and work in, that simply isn't possible. Which brings me back to the word "cockroaches." Here in Atlanta, they refer to those as "Palmetto Bugs" or "Waterbugs." Euphemism or not - a roach is still a roach!
  16. That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. And I always love the use of "NIMBY" wherever possible. It cracks me up. : o )
  17. What frequency does Verizon use for voice? Just curious as their coverage is clearly the best in the nation (even though I have Sprint). I'm wondering if their impeccable coverage is more a result of greater tower density or better signal propagation (or a combination of several factors)?
  18. Wow, so even after zooming in I had to rub my eyes. It seems essentially NO sites in Midtown have been upgraded to LTE, let alone 3G, but I suppose this goes along with the idea of doing the suburbs first, the urban areas later, eh? But I do want to let you know that I talked to a supervisor at Sprint regarding my rollercoaster data speed ride and was informed that a.) there had been a local tower outage likely due to NV upgrades and that b.) the other towers around me were being overloaded as they were being forced to carry the extra traffic. And, a few hours later, lo and behold, my data speeds have now returned to "normal." Attached is a screenshot showing this. ok...well I tried to attach it but I don't know how. It says something like "file type not supported in this community." But the downlink was 1296 and the uplink was 637. So, yeah, definitely better.
  19. Robert - Really? That is odd. I certainly believe you but can you tell me why my speeds suddenly increased about 4 weeks ago up to about 1.3 down, on average, and remained there until just yesterday? I posted previously about this in another thread...I can't recall which but it pertained to NV in general. To sum it up...when I first moved to this part of Atlanta I had horrible speeds, like today (around 0.2 down) and even less. They sent me an airave. It didn't work out (horrid voice calls). They advised me updates were ongoing. They were right. One day my speeds spiked up to the aforementioned 1.3 (ish) down and remained that way until yesterday. If the speed increases were not due to NV upgrades, then why in the world did my speed increase so dramatically..some five times faster, in fact (and seemingly overnight)? I hope you can explain because I am lost!
  20. I still don't see a single person on any website/blog reporting having been able to download this OTA or otherwise prompted by their phone for an OFFICIAL update. Am I wrong here/missing something?
  21. Also, on another note, 3G data speeds here in Atlanta (Emory University area) have suddenly become dreadfully slow, just as they were beore NV began. Currently, using the speedtest app, I am only getting 0.1 - 0.25 down. No joke. Whereas before I was consistently getting 0.8 - 1.4 mb down. With LTE scheduled to go live on Sunday, is this latest slowdown in 3G speeds somehow related even though these are obviously 2 different technologies/frequencies?? Just curious as not being able to effectively use my smartphone for data really sucks the "smart" out of the "phone."
  22. Can we not just force it through the "system update" function under "about phone" in settings? I keep hitting it, but it keeps telling me that my "system is up to date." Which, in my mind, it is NOT! LOL...so how bout it - can we force it or must we endure the dreaded wait?
