The Magic Box 6 months later

Finally received my magic box yesterday after having been approved months ago. And....went from weak b26 in my master bedroom with 1.8-2.5 dl to b41 with 11.5 dl speeds.  This is because the MB in my living room window is able to latch onto a band 25 connection. Really cool stuff!

  1. Guys,

I dug up this old article because I was offered the Note 3 today as a replacement for my damanged Nexus 5 by asurion on the phone.  I am not really keen on returning to the lumbering performance of a Samsung, Touchwiz "graced" phone after using the sly and nimble Nexus 5 for the past 8 months.  The N5 apparently is out of stock indefinitely from Asurion and they tried quite hard to push the Note 3 on me.  I declined.

I declined because I seemed to remember that this was a single band LTE device.  This article confirms as much.  However, was a tri band Note 3 ever released a la the Galaxy S4T?  I didn't see anything performing a simple Google search and this site - as ususal - seems to be far and away the best source of information when looking for technical details such as this.

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Sprint is going to continue deploying 2.5 across the entire country. The 3-5 cities by 2016 (and I think this is still likely under promise over deliver) will have Tokyo like coverage. This means adding a significant number of sites and new small cell deployments to completely blanket cover a city.

Again though, at the same time they will still be installing 8T8R equipment across the entire network during this time. They are still on track for 100 million POPs covered by the end of this year.

"Tokyo like coverage"....now THAT would be awesome. So these model cities, of sorts, will be the star shining examples of where the network is ultimately headed but we all still get our lovely 2.5, replete with 8t8r radios, beamforming and all? I can get with that.

  3. I was excited about this change until I read that Bloomberg article. Only 3-5 cities....by 2016? I thought the previously conceived deployment strategy would have seen the vast majority of Sprint's entire footprint blanketed with 2.5 by that distant date. If anything, I was hoping for even an acceleration to that timeline. I understand targeting dense population centers first, if for no other reason than seeking a proper ROI but that pace does seem surprisingly slow to me and I'm a huge Sprint supporter. It will be interesting to see which cities are selected.

  4. I really hope deployment of Eastern Kentucky:Lexington isn't ahead of Western Kentucky:Louisville. Louisville and surrounding areas are way more heavily populated.

Both markets are pretty small compared to other markets being worked on right now and so deployment should go fairly easily/quickly. It seems like preliminary work is going on in both markets so I would guess both markets will begin going live with LTE sites around the same time (even way before Sprint formally "launches" them).

  5. Yep, saw that the other day and was trying to make it over there yesterday to try it but couldnt. Even though it is tagged as 3G only I am hoping they have made further progress. That tower also services a good part of the snooty rich tourists that come here for there vacation homes on the water....although they are all gone home for the year more or less. Will try to get down there soon.

Bitter, party of one.....your table is now available. : o )

  6. So I just learned a few days ago (from this very awesome web site right here) that a Wimax protection sites exists in my hometown of Lexington, Kentucky and that 4G coverage for that reason is alive and well there. And now I learn today that NV is underway to provide 4G LTE as well. How funny that they should get awesome 4G speeds before I do here in Atlanta. I know Atlanta has launched but, let me tell you, it's extremely spotty and still unavailable at my house. So, I guess...go, Lexington! lol
