  1. A variation on this, right here, is the way to handle rural deployment. I wish someone would do it. My thought would be to partner with small local ISPs to do a full build. For example, where my parents live and using T-Mobile as the example, Kinex Telecom could deploy all three T-Mobile bands (700 5x5, AWS 20x20, and PCS 20x20), selling both fixed and mobile service on that spectrum. In lieu of lease fees, Kinex would buy the equipment, pay the rent, pay the backhaul fees, etc. and T-Mobile customers who go through the area would get to use that rather than roaming (or no service). I imagine the Sprint/Shentel arrangement is similar, albeit on a much larger scale. It's a real shame nobody is doing something like that, because it would win a lot of good will and a lot of rural customers, while gaining a lot of rural coverage at little or no cost. - Trip
  2. Seems that way. A bunch of them were dual mode, it seems, and quite a few (not all) are running second carrier. My home site is B25/B26 plus Clear B41 with second carrier. The next site over has B25/B26 and Clear B41 without second carrier. A site down the road toward Wegmans has Clear equipment on it without Sprint, presumably turned off now that WiMax is gone, but T-Mobile has AWS and 700 on that one. And the site at Wegmans is B25/B26 with Clear not running B41. No 8T8R either. - Trip
  3. There are actually a few that seem to be that way here. There are two on power lines that don't seem to have been touched and are 3G only. One would actually probably be my home site if it were running LTE--it seems to be for T-Mobile, at least. But T-Mobile is running both AWS and 700 LTE from it--I actually drove by the day they were putting up the 700 panels--and all three of the other carriers have multiple LTE bands on their power line poles in the same area, but not Sprint. Another is on the roof of a hotel where AT&T and T-Mobile both have LTE service. Sprint, apparently, plans to move to a hotel next door, but I've seen nothing to indicate it's happening any time soon. - Trip
  4. Most of what? Many of the Clear sites here are co-located with Sprint, though certainly not all. There are some WiMax-only Clear sites on the same structure as B25/B26 only Sprint and some that are not co-located at all. And some Sprint-only sites without B41. - Trip
  5. I think Sprint's coverage is good, as long as you don't care what kind of coverage it is. I still see 3G pretty often. But there's no reason why there should be places on the Beltway where only B25/B26 are available. Or I-66. And there DEFINITELY should not be 3G-only non-NV installations still floating around. - Trip
  6. If I had to choose between more 8T8R to replace Clear B41 gear or 8T8R on towers that are not currently upgraded/WiMax only, I would take the latter, no question. Here in the DC market, there are way too many sites, some in busy areas, that are B25/B26 only. Or areas which are outright holes that replacing existing WiMax-only equipment would fix. I don't doubt the 8T8R would help matters in tough spots where Clear gear is today, but it seems like a much more marginal benefit to me than filling coverage gaps or upgrading towers with no B41 gear on them. - Trip
  7. I noticed this myself. On my S5 I almost never saw B25 unless I was on a tower without B41 around; I would jump between B41 and B26 and that was it. Now I see it pretty regularly. - Trip

  9. For anyone who wants to follow it, here's the auction status page for the Incentive Auction, which starts today. https://auctiondata.fcc.gov/public/projects/1000 - Trip
  10. Spoke with Sprint support this morning who did something, had me reboot my phone, and when it came up again, FM was working. - Trip
  11. I believe that is US Cellular territory, and will count toward roaming. Between the two cities, though, is Carolina West Wireless, which may or may not count. - Trip
  12. I'm looking for something smaller than that. I'm considering this: http://smile.amazon.com/Absorption-Protection-Bumper-Scratch-Protective/dp/B01BOBL8SQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1464559692&sr=1-4&keywords=lg+g5+case Also, does anyone have NextRadio working? The NextRadio page says the Sprint LG G5 should work, but no such luck when I actually try it, saying it's having a problem accessing the tuner hardware. Similarly, I have another radio app which just freezes when I try to access the tuner. - Trip
  13. Many thanks to ryry4ya, it was NFC. I shut it off since I never use it. - Trip
  14. Got my G5 yesterday! So far, I'm really liking this phone. My take so far: Do we know if this phone supports SRLTE? I am actually impressed with it; SCP has been showing me 1X with LTE only for limited periods after very low signal or signal loss. Anecdotally, it seems like it's quicker to jump back to LTE (with 1X still showing) than my S5 was, which suggests that SRLTE could be helping on that front. It also seems to drop unusable LTE faster than my S5 did, again, anecdotally. I'll have to verify both of these things over the next few weeks. I love how much I can customize the UI. Not only could I change what was shown in the pull-down menu to match what I actually wanted there, but I can also change the buttons at the bottom! So I actually have a "Capture+" button sitting in the bar at the bottom right between Home and Back. All I need to do is figure out how to have it be one button press instead of one plus save and I'll have the perfect phone for screenshots. I've also customized a lot of other things to be exactly what I like; I'm quite satisfied. I LOVE Knock On. Enough said. Debating whether to put a Knock Code on it. If I put one on, can I still Knock On and then swipe to open or am I then required to Knock each time I want to wake my phone? At home or at work, the code seems good, but on the go it seems like that would then require two hands instead of one to wake my phone. Somewhat off subject, but this is my first USB-C device and I love how solid the connector feels with the phone. Micro USB always felt brittle in a way that USB-C does not. I have yet to accidentally press the back button, as I do all the time on my LG Leon LTE. LG definitely got it right this time. Battery drain on the way in this morning was better than my S5 was, even with a new battery. Not sure if it's a difference in reporting or better use of battery, but either way, I'm happier. What is the "N" looking icon? I can't figure out what it is, though I'm sure with some digging I could figure it out. Any opinions on cases? After cracking my S5, I'm thinking about getting one on this go around. More to come. - Trip
  15. Sorry, have had a hectic week (web server problems, which are on-going) and had completely forgotten. I'll post some details a little later, but the biggest changes seem to be the addition of a number of "negative" records. My quick research on the topic means these are networks that the phone IS NOT allowed to roam on. Looks like this is primarily international operators (Some I can't identify, plus Bell, Nortel, Telus, Newtel, MT Mobility, IslandTel, SaskTel, Aliant Telecom, Hong Kong Telecom, China Telecom, Portatel Del Sureste, Comcel, Telecomunicaciones del Golfo, Operadora Unefon). - Trip
  16. Well, just placed an order online for a G5 for myself (and an S7 for my wife). Excited for it to arrive! - Trip
  17. Interesting! I just did some reading on Knock On and on Knock Codes. That's immensely useful, and makes my decision easier. Thanks! - Trip
  18. Because of how difficult I'm finding it to get my hands on an HTC 10 to look at, I'm leaning back toward the LG G5. The question I have is, I'm very used to using my S5 with it lying on my desk at work. If the screen is off, I can just press the power button (on the side) and wake it up. However, the G5 has the power button on the back. Given the always-on screen, can it be woken up from the screen without the rear button? Or is there some alternate way of waking it up that does not require me to pick up the phone first? - Trip
  19. In the SignalCheck directory on the phone itself (not the SD card). So if you plug in your phone and have MTP enabled, on your computer (assuming Windows), your phone should appear, open that, then the phone's storage, then SignalCheck. - Trip
  20. 1) There doesn't tend to be usable GPS in subway stations (underground). 2) The neighbor notes were correct. It was the site I was connected to (which had the GCI available for matching) that was incorrect. - Trip
  21. Post it and I will analyze as soon as I can. - Trip
  22. I'm not sure if this is a bug or an unsupported behavior. I took this picture this morning while sitting in the Crystal City Metro station. Look carefully at the PCI of the connected cell versus the PCI of the neighbor cell. In Crystal City and Pentagon City Metro stations, the 02 and 1A sectors of 0303DFxx are used with PCI 403. In Pentagon Metro, the 01 and 19 sectors of 0303DFxx are used with PCI 234. So in my database, I set the notes for each of the sectors differently to match where they actually belong. That is, 0303DF02 and 0303DF1A say "Crystal City/Pentagon City (U)" while 0303DF01 and 0303DF19 say "Pentagon Metro (U)". Despite this, the note for the 01/19 sector is showing even though I'm connected to 1A in the picture. (But then the correct note is used for the neighbor cell!) I know that the sectors are linked so that the app is smart enough to link newly-seen sectors together (as well as connecting B41 with B25/B26) and when you set a site note from within the app it rewrites all the associated ones, which is all fine and preferred, but I didn't think it did that when reading back out of the database as well. Thoughts? - Trip
