  1. That barely would register as a concern.  Any MVNOs that are just CDMA1X/EV-DO -- and can we please not use the term "3G" indiscriminately? -- signed on with Sprint at the past or present coverage footprint.  If they were not to get EV-DO in coverage expansion, too bad.  They are not entitled to it.  Furthermore, before and during Network Vision buildout, the MVNOs already dealt with CDMA1X only coverage areas.

Sorry. I regress at times :)

  2. Just so everybody has a better idea of practical applications here is what the public safety initiative is all about....https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/Fact%20Sheet_Nationwide%20Public%20Safety%20Broadband%20Network.pdf

Personally, I don't think it will be much better than a viable offload solution in the urban centers. The amount of data being moved by emergency services is pretty substantial. I don't see any indication of using the network for VOIP but I assume it is possible. If that happens then an even greater amount of bandwidth would be utilized. I honestly don't believe that it represents a massive advantage for any of the national operators.

  3. What's the state of the network here now?

Not sure what other people are talking about but over the last six weeks I have seen a significant improvement in the network in the Raleigh area. Heck, the network even held steady during the State Fair in October. I will say that I find Cary to be a bit spotty and there are still some 3g only holes here and there. But overall speeds have increased in my experience.

  4. Idle air is a thing of the past, you'll still find some places with the setups, but they don't work. It's simply cheaper to just idle your truck.....And you generally have to pay for wifi, and coverage of wifi is very spotty depending where you are parked in the lot.

I drive mostly in the midwest, and sprint coverage works well for me. it's rare that I stop somewhere for the night that I can't watch netflix.

That's kind of odd since they are still adding locations, but it has been a few years since i was on the road so you would know better than I. Its good to hear that Sprint coverage in the midwest is good. That's where I had the most issues. I would have no coverage west of Salinas Kansas Until I got close to Denver and no coverage through most of Wyoming.

  5. Should I wait until $2?

That seems to be when the shorts will head for the hills... I think. [emoji45]

I would use dollar cost averaging. That will ensure that you don't miss the bottom.

  6. If that's the case then AT$T will be loaded with debt too. If the Direct TV deal is approved.

After the Vodafone buyout Verizons debt ballooned to about $100 billion. I'm sure that Verizon can still tap the credit markets. The question is, for how much? Have not kept up with the rumored Dish deal but I don't think it  would raise AT&T's debt to the same levels.

  7. Nah, she might be playing checkers and the others are playing chess. SoftBank is playing chess, T-Mobile is playing chess (poorly if they can't acquire Dish but they are playing) and Verizon is still in solid position even if they don't buy Dish (which I think they should using the eventual Bell Atlantic sell off to generate capital.)

I don't know about that. It seems that the argument is already being made that some companies already have more than enough spectrum so if they acquire 600 MHz spectrum they should be forced to divest other spectrum holdings. Sounds like she is trying to position AT&T into a win win proposition.

  8. I think Sprint will most definitely bid on the unreserved portion, but the reserved portion is going to be a lot cheaper and more cost-effective since they won't be bidding against the duopoly.

This suddenly becomes interesting when you consider that Verizon is loaded with debt. How much would they be able to spend on the auction?

  9. That's not the issue in my mind though. Joan was being disingenuous when she said that Sprint and Tmo have more spectrum per subscriber than the poor Duopoly do. Boohoo.

But the issue always has been low frequency spectrum. And since that really is the subject...low frequency spectrum, she should have cited Tmo and Sprint low frequency spectrum assets per subscriber compared to the Duopoly. But she knows that graph looks awful and would add fuel to the fire.

She is a liar and trying to sway the masses by trying to change the argument. The discussion is about low frequency spectrum. Not spectrum in general.

She is playing chess. If she cant stop the "Magneta Madness" then she may be setting the stage for a forced spectrum swap.

  10. My battery is back to draining quickly, phone gets quite warm at times.  Android OS and Android System are still at the top for battery usage.  Just over 7 hours on battery and I'm at 26%.

    Anyone else have the issue?

I dont know if it is user error on my part or a software quirk but I have noticed that the power saver somehow becomes disabled. Everytime my battery drains the power saver is off so you may want to check that.

  11. Did you re-add it?  I've had to do that a few times after OTAs for various phones.

Yeah. Thats my next step. Just wanted to see if this was a known issue. The odd thing is my car is still in my Bluetooth list. Curious.

  12. The average American uses 80-100 gallons per day according to the USGS. The average shower alone is ~ 20 gallons of water. The average toilet flush is ~2 gallons, an average of five flushes a day per person. Then there's tooth brushing, hand washing, cooking, cleaning. We use WAY more water than we are prepared to admit, as a nation.

Some research indicates that it is not as clean cut as you make it. The figure of 80=-100 gallons a day is accurate. However, that figure is for domestic water use which includes dish washing, clothes washing and lawn watering. Additionally, the average per person use varies widely depending on where one lives. http://www.epa.gov/WaterSense/our_water/tomorrow_beyond.html

  13. Ha, nice pun. Anyways, it's not a deal breaker for me if BlackBerry doesn't pick up those bands on their older models. The service I get is good enough for most of my purposes. I expect the new ones that Sprint and T-Mobile release will pick those new bands up. It's just a question of when those new models will be released.

I think BlackBerry has decided on their course of action- pursuing the enterprise market. Since John Chen became CEO in late 2013, that's what he has been doing. They released a new version of BES, added additional enterprise features to BBM, and struck some new deals with Ford and Samsung. BlackBerry is still available to consumers, it's just not trying to go toe to toe with iOS, Android, and Windows like it did when BlackBerry 10 OS was first released.

You are absolutely right. However, Apple and Google are still on the fence about becoming significant competitors in that space or cooperating with Blackberry/QNX.
