  1. Hi. I saw some various conversations about it when searching, but not really a detailed thread or post;

It would be nice if there was a centralized/running list of confirmed in the real world phones that are such 'gigabit class'.

Citing or referring to phone specs is nice, but what matters is the real world results of those specs.

Perhaps a sticky thread or post somewhere, or even the first post here edited for them.

I never understood having two SSIDs for 2.4 and 5Ghz... (Coming from an Apple Airport Extreme user)

Like ingenium mentioned, using separately named ssid is to give better control over which bands are used and make it dead simple to identify which band is being used.

To make it real easy for guests and non-techs, instead of naming ssd with ghz or band (ie 2.4/g or 5/n/ac), label them fast and slow.

Then people will understand why their internet is slow, if they are connected to the 'slow' wifi, and try to connect to the 'fast' one if possible.

Bad router or inherent with Sprint's firmware on these? Can anyone test on a 100Mbps+ connection?

I have this router from sprint, using merlin firmware, I get ~125mbs over wifi to ipad mini and gbit ethernet to pc with charter.

That said, the router is in the garage and I have an additional access point inside house (same ssid, connected over gbit network) so most likely connecting via AP/gbit.

But the router itself, is definately capable of 125+meg, when using current merlin firmware.

  4. I sent back mine after they took away unlimited.

Then I went to that old business unlimited hotspot, until that went away.

I bought an ipad mini 2 when it was on sale ridiculously cheap via sprint business

At some point my $50 iphone plan got changed to a $60 iphone plan + 3gig hotspot, so I just used that when needed.

After the unlimited tablet plan became available I get unlimited lte via ipad mini, and it comes with 10 gig hotspot for like 30$ (minus auto pay credits).

I waited forever for an ipad mini 5 but they didn't announce one at the last apple thing, so I recently upgraded to mini 4.

Aside from the additional cost for the tablet, the unlimited tablet plan is the best deal going if you use lots of (tablet) data.

  5. the calyx page seems to work for me @ https://www.calyxinstitute.org/member/membership-levels

and I can log in to my account, not that it does a lot

as far a the device, it has never been very stable for me here in st louis, I suspect it has issues with the mixed clear/sprint towers here, as it loses internet while still showing 'connected', which either takes a reboot or a manual disconnect/connect to get working again.

the battery life is not that great either.

I am not likely to renew, I got the unlimited tablet data plan and it comes with 10gig hotspot on my ipad mini2, so between that and my phones I rarely need this hotspot service anymore.

  6. I can regularly pull 120ish on my charter cable through the asus with no issues.

I am using the un-sprintified mod and merlin asus firmware.

I would suggest turning off all extra services and wifi, unplug anything that might be in the usb ports, and plug only 1 computer into the asus:

Make sure any QOS or speed limits are removed or disabled in the asus web config. I don't remember which section they are in.

arris <> asus <> 1pc/laptop that is known to get more than 90mbs speed tests

if that gets you above 90, then you can start enabling wifi and other services to see what affects the speed.

otherwise not sure what to advise, I don't know if the sprint QOS will limit your total speed or not.

  7. I just compared my sisters 3 line ED1500 to the new plan.

New plan was ~$20 cheaper, added 10 gig hotspot/vpn/p2p limit, but adding another +25$ for 1 phone still in contract. Not including device payments.

Net = new plan $5 more expensive.

If you have ED plan and are out of contract (so you don't have to pay $25/line), then new plan may be cheaper.

The major 'problem' with ED is no hotspot. For some people that is a critical feature, others not so much.

If you need a hotspot, then the newer plans might be better for you.

Otherwise, ED still better with no hotspot, and with no other silly/arbitrary restrictions/throttling/etc.

  8. It is more accurate to say, the contract has been applied to the device directly, instead of the service plan.

If you don't want to be tied to an installment contract, then don't buy/lease phones from your service provider.

Either pay up front, put on a separate credit card, or buy used from craigslist or other sources.

Then you are free to shop any for provider deals 'contract free'.

  9. A device lease or installment purchase still is a pseudo contract.  Terminating service accelerates the remaining lease or installment payments due.  In many cases, the remaining balance exceeds that of what would have been the ETF.  Many subs are in over their heads on device costs and cannot afford to pay off accelerated balances.

    AJ

Of course, as previously discussed, the move to installment plans costs customers more, not saves them money.

Aside from your assertion about customer finances, at least most newer devices once paid off can be used on multiple networks.

If someone doesn't fall for the trick in trading nearly new devices for new ones, they can typically reuse their current device on their new provider.

The only time it might be preferable to trade in your old device, is if it so old that it is not compatible.

  10. my optimizer is showing $90 for 2 lines, no hotspot, with $10 "SDP" discount (5 each line) plus the auto-pay discounts.

this would be coming from single ed450 + $60 iphone plan with 3g hotspot. ~134 total not including device payment

    switch plans offers the new 65 plan with 10g hotspot;

    WARNING:

Incl. unlimited domestic Long Distance calling, texting & data that streams video at up to HD 1080p, music at up to 1.5mbps, gaming at up to 8mbps. & 10GB of high-speed Mobile Hotspot, VPN & P2P data. After the 10GB, MHS, VPN & P2P usage limited to 2G speeds

no way I'm switching to any plan that arbitrarily limits vpn just to get extra hotspot

  11. Spam calls, especially robocalls, have been a big issue in the past year or so for not only sprint but others as well.

I've defaulted to not speaking for at least ten seconds when I pick up calls. Basically if it's a robocaller they will automatically disconnect after 10 seconds if it hears no voice response.

Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk

Yeah similarly, on unknown calls I always try to wait until the caller speaks before saying hello or anything.

If it isn't a spam caller, its usually an old lady with a wrong number or someone who sounds high or drunk.

  12. I said this several years ago right here on s4gru, all these family plans with a wide range of data buckets was just stupid.  With everyone offering more and more data it was bound to make a full circle right back to unlimited data.

The whole point to taking away unlimited, was so they could bring it back at even higher prices if they ever needed to.

Just like the transition to unsubsidized. It was not designed to save consumers money, it was designed to make more profit.

All that said, the vzw offer seems to be a pretty competitive one.
