  1. Well, I personally wouldn't quite go that far because based on what folks are reporting on XDA, there do appear to be some carriers where the data seems to work without modifying the APN settings. Also, rooting too is an option for some users who are comfortable with doing that.

Could you direct me to that XDA convo please?

  2. Rooting was easy and it wasn't too difficult to change the apn once rooted. I also have an unlocked iPhone 4S on Verizon and the process was much much simpler for the iPhone. Literally popped the sim in and you're good to go.

Sprint/Samsung need to enable auto updating of APN's with a new SIM card like the iPhone or at least enable users to manually update without rooting.

When I got back to the US my apn menu disappeared even though it was working when I was out of the country, must need a foreign sim in for that menu to show up even while rooted. Not getting data connection at all in the US now. Will try to flash back to stock and report how it goes.

My APN menu never even appeared when I put in my European SIM card. I had to download a 3rd party app to 'open' the APN settings and see they are all uneditable. I hope I don't run into problems when I go to the US and into Sprint's exclusive domain.

"Sprint/Samsung need to enable auto updating of APN's with a new SIM card like the iPhone or at least enable users to manually update without rooting." Couldnt have said a truer statement!!! It's a headache and for what? Don't say it: Proprietary Obsessions

  3. Those are the system APNs, the ones that come pre-configured and will remain after a factory reset. When the user adds an APN it can't be stored in that file since it doesn't persist with a factory reset (and I believe /etc is mounted read-only). It appears that there are 2 locations for APNs, one for system provided APNs and one for user provided ones. I THINK that /etc/apns-conf.xml is used to initially generate /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db. On my Nexus 7 at least, when I manually added an APN it showed up in this database and not /etc/apns-conf.xml.

The question is though will just adding the APN to this database be sufficient for it to show up and be used? I think it is, but I won't have the opportunity to test it until the end of the month. I'll be traveling to a country with UMTS/HSPA 850, so I'll report back if I was able to get data to work.

I am currently in France until August 2nd and after successfully getting Sprint to unlock my Galaxy S4, I travelled here about 2 weeks later. On my wife's HTC EVO Design4G, I put in her 'Free Mobile' SIM card  and voila, 3G & H data as well as MMS and voice and SMS service began working fine on my new number attached to the SIM. On my Galaxy S4, I put in the SIM and went to configure the APNs only to find that they are in-configurable! In fact they are not even accessible without a shortcut app leading you to the APN page where all the settings are greyed out and if you want to add a new APN, the new APN page is unusable and greyed out as well.

Until there is an update, this phone does not seem to be 100% international despite Sprint's claim since only half the services work. The only services that work are the same ones that will work with a 10flip-phone over here (Voice and SMS).

I have searched high and low and those that know me know I do not give up on a technology question or error until I have it fixed or have convinced the company to fix it. However, this one has me beat. I do not root my phone for multiple reasons, the least of which is I do not like the idea of owning a $700 brick. There are other reasons as well which are out of my control.

I should not have to root my phone, however, to be able to access the features that Sprint claims are available on my phone.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone help? I am posting on this forum because you guys have discussed APNs and the Galaxy S4 and I love S4GRU and have gotten results from you all in the past!  :D

Help! I'm in France and would LOVE to be able to use some of the 3GB of data that came with the SIM card plan on the phone that was guaranteed unlocked by Sprint. Suggestions?

    Merci!

  4. 3G is improving there it seems.

Epic 4G Touch? My wife has that one. Is there an issue with the virtual lit haptic keys going out and pressing themselves? Ugh. 2 phones and several hard resets later...

  5. The data speeds have been significantly slowed the past few days across LA and Ventura Co. (possibly from the wind?) It's hard to even connect to Facebook or Instagram with the 3G speeds that have been given out. Hoping for something more manageable.

Random question. I don't understand the conversations against those who don't offload from fast 4G to their slow home WiFi as soon as they get home. What if you don't have a wireless router or you can't connect to it via all your devices at once or what if your home internet is slower than the speeds that you're paying Sprint for? Can someone politely enlighten me? We pay exorbitant fees for both, so aren't we allowed to use them according to our needs for fastest productivity? :realitycheck: -Signed Someone who abides by T and Cs of Sprint (ie. doesnt torrent bits etc). :thx:

  6. Become a Premier Sponsor, and you can check the status yourself.

Now, if this is a question about Sprint LTE at your home, why should it matter? You should be offloading to your broadband connection at home.

    Both simple as that...

First, I am a Sponsor and I am not a multi-millionaire so I can't do more than that right now. I used to be able to post questions without getting them removed constantly.

Second, my broadband at home is through the only service provider in my area, Time Warner, and the speeds don't go over 4-6mbps on a good day because of the wiring in my complex. Also I take walks regularly and like to be able to use my phone on my walks.

So, no its not as 'simple as that' for everyone.

Tell me where I can post my question so it won't be removed.

  7. I live in Canoga Park now and get LTE all over my area (except my street.. It dies there.. Lol). But is this phase the weak phase or will it always be this weak? When driving I never have LTE for more than a minute or two. It's very spotty, never reliable, and rarely more than one or two bars of voice signal at the time of reception.

    Any word? Merci !

  8. Most of the SF Valley is off today too. Could be weather related tech issues. 3G won't even connect in Canoga Park. Says 'network unavailable' ever since 7 this morning. Works ok in Calabasas but once you get to Canoga Park, it vanishes. Also 1-0 bars of voice coverage there.

  9. Yup I'm starting to think that LTE won't reach me here in El Monte until the official launch :-

Yeah, whatever areas get it before the launch is special and great for them, but honestly we have no grounds to complain that 'we aren't getting any birthday presents right now even though our 'official' birthday is a ways off'.

Keyword: Testing: Take measures to check the quality, performance, or reliability of (something), esp. before putting it into widespread use or practice.

  10. I think honestly we are all just waiting on an official word from Sprint for a launch date. Right now, everything is in testing phases. Calabasas LTE may never get 'tested' before the official launch just like Glendale LTE may never get a taste before it goes official. There are certainly more areas than not that don't have LTE in the Los Angeles proper area. Anything better than 0.05Mbps download speeds are welcome news to me since I never saw anything higher than that at my house in Calabasas for 9 months straight until early this month!

  11. I was able to talk Sprint into swapping out my EVO 4G LTE for a NEW Galaxy S III about 4 months after getting the HTC phone. I had been an EVO fan from the start, having owned the 4G, 3D and the LTE... But this EVO was a potentially awesome phone but after some major issues from Sense reloading constantly to messages and 'People app' related processes including messaging app taking forever to load after early Sept update, the uses were drowned by glitches in every handset I got as replacement. The radios were poor; the Galaxy S III doesn't seem drastically better as far as radios but it is certainly FAR more stable, fast, and hey.. Removable battery! :D

  12. So the western San Fernando Valley, though the first in LA has now fallen behind in terms of mapping... Because of spotty coverage and dropped LTE signals? 'Peut être'. I'm doing my best mapping it.. But if anyone is in SF Valley West of 405..Please pull out Sensorly! :) merci beaucoup !

  13. The Airave™ connects directly to your broadband Internet connection; not a Sprint wireless data service. If you are connecting to your Airave™ via your phone, you will get, supposedly, better 3G coverage and speeds. This does not affect your 4G WiMax or LTE reception as it is a completely different service & technology.

  14. Nothing yet.. In fact nothing south of the 101 freeway and/or Ventura Blvd. yet except a few hundred feet on a few streets and two notable blotches right on downtown LA.

EDIT: Since posting.. It seems downtown LA has 'blossomed' this evening...

  15. So,a question. Once LTE is officially launched do people still have to toggle airplane mode a few times to connect or does it connect like the old WiMax (automatically when nearby) ?

  16. **** i was there earlier today and didn't get any lte. they must have turned it on afterwards

In most cases you must first turn airplane mode on and then off... or do a PRL update before you'll get any 4G LTE on your device... It's rare that your device will actually do a handover automatically.
